Epidemiology of tuberculosis in Benin.

SETTING: Benin, West Africa. OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB) in Benin. DESIGN: Analysis of two tuberculin surveys initiated in 1987 and 1994 and of the quarterly reports of the Basic Management Units to the National Tuberculosis Programme from 1995 to 2007. RESULTS: The average annual risk for a child in Benin of becoming infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis was around 0.5% in the mid 1980s. Gangrenous bowel. Benin experience.

A retrospective study of 115 patients who presented to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital with intestinal gangrene over a 5 year period is presented. Although hernia is the most common cause of bowel gangrene, more patients with volvulus end up with gangrenous bowel. Because Nigerian patients present with late intestinal obstruction, more dead bowel would have been expected than is currently noted. Is it possible that the African is resistant to intestinal strangulation?

In the oesophagus, they may lodge at the cricopharyngeal sphincter, point where the left main stem bronchus crosses the oesophagus or the lower oesophageal sphincter. When impacted they may cause pressure necrosis with time, suppuration and perforation, which may lead to mediastinitis. AIM OF THE STUDY: Audit of patients with swallowed dentures at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This is a retrospective study of all cases of swallowed

[Meningococcal meningitis epidemics in Benin].

Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis are common in several African countries, including Benin. In northern Benin, part of the "meningitis belt", incidence has been increasing over the past decade, and lethality is high. The A and C serogroups are the primary causal agents. Recently, the appearance of the W135 strain in bordering countries induced considerable fear and necessitated more rigorous epidemiological surveillance in the north. Little epidemiologic information on the course and trends of these epidemics is available. The goal of this article is to describe the pattern of these outbre

Epidemiologic profile of hemoglobinopathies in Benin.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder in the world with the birth of approximately 300,000 newborns screened each year. In 2009, the World Health Organization ranked the fight against sickle cell disease among the priorities for the Africa regions. The best way to prevent this incurable disease remains, on one hand systematic screening at birth, and on the other the proscription of risky union between heterozygous subjects. AIM: The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of sickle cell disease and other hemoglobinopathies in Benin an

Bartonella spp. in Small Mammals, Benin.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of Bartonella organisms in small mammals in Cotonou, Benin. We captured 163 rodents and 12 insectivores and successfully detected Bartonella DNA from 13 of the 175 small mammal individuals. Bartonella spp., identical or closely related to Bartonella elizabethae, Bartonella tribocorum, and Bartonella rochalimae, was detected. A potential new Bartonella species, proposed as Candidatus Bartonella mastomydis, was found in three Mastomys individuals and genetically characterized by targeting two housekeeping genes (rpoB and gltA)

Childhood hyperpyrexia in Benin City, Nigeria.

Childhood hyperpyrexia is associated with serious infections particularly bronchopneumonia, infective diarrhoea, meningitis, measles, urinary tract infections, otitis media, septicemia and sickle cell crisis Hyperpyrexia was found most in children aged 6-12 months followed by children aged 12-18 months. Hyperpyrexia occurred least in children aged 2-6 months. Febrile convulsion was associated with 38% of the cases. Malaria was a cause of convulsion in 27% of children with fever. This appears to contrast earlier reports by Lennox (1953) and Familusi (1971). The study confirms the rarity of hype
