Clinical pearl: benzethonium chloride for habit-tic nail deformity.

Treatment of habit-tic nail deformity is challenging, as it often requires both patient awareness and behavioral changes that may be long-standing. Many treatment options have been suggested, but limitations include inadequate supporting evidence and potential adverse effects. Herein, we describe the use of benzethonium chloride as a safe and effective treatment of habit-tic nail deformity.

Determination of benzethonium chloride in anthrax vaccine adsorbed by HPLC.

A novel and sensitive HPLC method for the determination of benzethonium chloride (BZC) in anthrax vaccine was developed. Adjuvant Alhydrogel was removed by syringe filter after a simple sample pretreatment - acidification prior to injection. Chromatography was performed by isocratic reverse phase separation with methanol/262 mM ammonium acetate (80/20, v/v) on an endcapped C18 column with diode array detector (DAD). The method showed excellent recovery (100+/-1.5%). The results indicated that this method could accurately determine BZC at the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.5 ppm and the limit of

Assessment of oral malodor and tonsillar microbiota after gargling with benzethonium chloride.

The oropharyngeal area can be a source of halitosis. However, the relationship between healthy tonsillar microbiota and halitosis is poorly understood. We conducted a pilot clinical study to clarify the effect of gargling with an antiseptic agent on tonsillar microbiota in patients with halitosis. Twenty-nine halitosis patients who did not have otolaryngologic disease or periodontitis were assigned randomly to one of three groups: benzethonium chloride (BZC) gargle; placebo gargle; no gargle. Concentrations of volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs) in mouth air, the organoleptic score (ORS) and tong

Long-term antiplaque, anticalculus, and antigingivitis effects of benzethonium/polymer complex in beagle dogs.

An electrostatic complex of 0.1% benzethonium chloride (BTC) plus 0.05% copolymer of methoxyethylene and maleic acid was evaluated in vitro for antibacterial effect. The complex by itself showed as much antibacterial activity as 0.1% BTC. The adsorption of 14C-BTC on saliva-coated hydroxyapatite disks and teeth in vitro was lower from the complex than the BTC solution, although in vivo activity was the same. The complex, BTC, and polymer solutions were evaluated in a 28-week study in 16 beagle dogs against plaque, gingivitis, and calculus formation. BTC and the complex significantly (alpha = 0

Assessment of the benzethonium chloride method for routine determination of protein in cerebrospinal fluid and urine.

We have tested the characteristics of the method of Iwata and Nishikaze (Clin Chem 25: 1317, 1979). The linearity, sensitivity, and precision are satisfactory and the reactivity of benzethonium chloride with various proteins (albumin, immunoglobulins) is the same. The method has been compared with Meulemans's technique (Clin Chim Acta 5: 757, 1960), routinely used in our laboratories, by analysis of 82 samples of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and 119 samples of urine. Our results for cerebrospinal fluid agree well with those of Iwata and Nishikaze (r = 0.976; y = 0.992x - 0.013), but we find their

Ecological Risk Analysis for Benzalkonium Chloride, Benzethonium Chloride, and Chloroxylenol in US Disinfecting and Sanitizing Products.

Use of three topical antiseptic compounds-benzalkonium chloride (BAC), benzethonium chloride (BZT), and chloroxylenol (PCMX)-has recently increased because of the phaseout of other antimicrobial ingredients (such as triclosan) in soaps and other disinfecting and sanitizing products. Further, use of sanitizing products in general increased during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. We assessed the environmental safety of BAC, BZT, and PCMX based on best available environmental fate and effects data from the scientific literature and privately held sources. The ecological exposure assessment fo

Efficacy of an alcohol-based healthcare hand rub containing synergistic combination of farnesol and benzethonium chloride.

Healthcare workers are required to disinfect the hands several times a day using hand disinfectants, which leads to chronic hand exposure to high levels of antimicrobials contained in the disinfectants, which could compromise the skin integrity. This problem may be addressed by developing hand disinfectants containing synergistic combinations of small amounts of antimicrobials and other agents. The synergistic effect of farnesol and essential oils with several antimicrobials was studied in vitro to select an effective antimicrobial system in preservative concentration for use in healthcare han

Synergistic Effect of Benzethonium Chloride Combined with Endoxan against Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Rats through Targeting Apoptosis Signaling Pathway.

Combination therapy has been the trendy of care, particularly in cancer remedy, since it is a rational approach to increase response and tolerability and to diminish resistance. Hence, there is a growing interest in combining anticancer drugs to maximizing efficacy with minimum systemic toxicity through the delivery of lower drug doses. Therefore, in the present study, the value of combination between benzethonium chloride (benzo) and endoxan (endo) as anti-tumor drug sensitization of hepatocellular carcinoma HCC treatment were detected both in vitro and in vivo. Studies on the topical treatment of experimental cutaneous leishmaniasis: the therapeutic effect of methyl benzethonium chloride and the aminoglycosides, gentamicin and paromomycin.

BALB/c mice infected with either Leishmania major or Leishmania mexicana were treated twice a day for 10 days with an ointment containing 15% gentamicin or paromomycin, with or without 12% methylbenzethonium chloride (MBCl). It was found that topical application of either paromomycin or MBCl cured the parasite lesion, and that combined treatment with the two compounds had an additive effect. However, after four days' therapy there was a severe inflammatory response at the treatment site, and in most experiments mice relapsed and renewed lesion growth was observed. It is suggested that a non-sp

The anti-tumor effects of main component (benzethonium chloride) of butorphanol tartrate injection in non-small cell lung cancer.

Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the global population. The effective management of cancer-associated pain and anesthesia are critical aspects of comprehensive cancer treatment. However, the role and mechanism of anesthesia and analgesia-related drugs in tumors remain controversial. In this study, the efficacy of 16 commonly used analgesics and anesthetics against non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) was evaluated. Among the 16 examined injections, butorphanol tartrate injection significantly inhibited the proliferation of NSCLC cells and increased the sensitivit
