Dysosmavillosa (Berberidaceae), a new species from Guizhou, Southwestern China.

A new species, Dysosmavillosa Z.W.Wang & H.C.Xi, is described and illustrated based on collections from the Yueliang Mountains in Congjiang County of Guizhou, Southwestern China. It is morphologically similar to D.difformis (Hemsl. & E.H.Wilson) T.H.Wang ex T.S.Ying, but can be easily distinguished from D.difformis by its inflorescences bearing a greater number of flowers (5-13 vs. 2-5), white-villous stems, petioles, and abaxial leaf blade, and stigma dark purple-red. In addition, we also compare this new species to the three species of Podophyllum (i.e., P.glaucescens J.M.H.Shaw, P.hemsleyi

Metabolome analysis of 20 taxonomically related benzylisoquinoline alkaloid-producing plants.

BACKGROUND: Recent progress toward the elucidation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid (BIA) metabolism has focused on a small number of model plant species. Current understanding of BIA metabolism in plants such as opium poppy, which accumulates important pharmacological agents such as codeine and morphine, has relied on a combination of genomics and metabolomics to facilitate gene discovery. Metabolomics studies provide important insight into the primary biochemical networks underpinning specialized metabolism, and serve as a key resource for metabolic engineering, gene discovery, and elucidation

[Active antihelminitic alkaloids: active in vitro against Leishmanic Tropica the protozoa involved in leishmaniasis].

Leishmaniasis caused by protozoan Leishmania ssp., is an endemic parasitic disease in Central and South America. The chemotherapeutic agents against Leishmania ssp. (pentavalent antimony compounds, pentamidine and amphothericine B) are toxic and expensive products. Basing on the Bolivian folk medicine, we tried to find new active principles. Fourteen isoquinoline alkaloids, especially bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloids extracted from Annonaceae, Berberidaceae, Hernandiaceae and Menispermaceae, demonstrate highly effective activity against this protozoan. Among them gyrocarpine, daphnandrine and o

Enabling sustainable supply of the essential cancer medicines etoposide and teniposide in yeast.

Lignans constitute a diverse family of plant metabolites with therapeutic potential. Among them, podophyllotoxin-type aryltetralin lignans serve as precursors for etoposide and teniposide. Etoposide is an essential anticancer medicine approved for first-line treatment of small cell lung cancer, whereas teniposide is used for treatment of leukemia and some brain tumors. Currently, these drugs depend on extraction of precursors from the endangered plant Sinopodophyllum hexandrum, followed by chemical transformations. By identifying key glycosyltransferases and executing more than 60 genetic edit

Chemistry and biology of ent-morphinan alkaloids.

Morphinan alkaloids have attracted constant attention since the isolation of morphine by Sertürner in 1805. However, a group of 45 compounds possessing a complete ent-morphinan backbone can also be found in the literature. These compounds are related to the morphinandienone subgroup and display a substitution pattern which is different from the morphinans. In particular, these alkaloids could be substituted at position C-2 and C-8 either by a hydroxy function or a methoxy moiety. Four groups of ent-morphinan alkaloids can be proposed, the salutaridine, pallidine, cephasugine and erromangine se
