Antiviral activity of berberine.

Plants are a rich source of new antiviral, pharmacologically active agents. The naturally occurring plant alkaloid berberine (BBR) is one of the phytochemicals with a broad range of biological activity, including anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antiviral activity. BBR targets different steps in the viral life cycle and is thus a good candidate for use in novel antiviral drugs and therapies. It has been shown that BBR reduces virus replication and targets specific interactions between the virus and its host. BBR intercalates into DNA and inhibits DNA synthesis and reverse transcriptase activi

Berberine and Berberine-Derived Compounds as Promising Weapons Against Helicobacter pylori: A Narrative Review.

Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common bacterial pathogens in humans and the primary etiological agent of chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, and gastric cancer. Its ability to establish persistent gastric colonization relies on multiple virulence factors, including adhesins, urease, cytotoxins, motility, outer membrane vesicles, and biofilm formation, which collectively promote bacterial survival, chronic inflammation, and treatment failure. The increasing prevalence of antibiotic-resistant H. pylori strains has intensified the search for therapeutic strategies targeting both bact

Berberine and neurodegeneration: A review of literature.

The excessive production of reactive oxygen species in nervous tissues is considered one of the major risk factors of neurodegenerative diseases. During the last two decades, much attention has been paid to the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of natural products and compounds isolated from natural products which are often characterized by high efficacy and low adverse effects. Berberine is an isoquinoline alkaloid, widely present in different medicinal herbs, especially in the genus Berberis. It is mainly used as antidiarrhoeal, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiprotozoal agent. Ho

13-(2-Methylbenzyl) Berberine Is a More Potent Inhibitor of MexXY-Dependent Aminoglycoside Resistance than Berberine.

We previously showed that berberine attenuates MexXY efflux-dependent aminoglycoside resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Here, we aimed to synthesize berberine derivatives with higher MexXY inhibitory activities. We synthesized 11 berberine derivatives, of which 13-(2-methylbenzyl) berberine (13-o-MBB) but not its regiomers showed the most promising MexXY inhibitory activity. 13-o-MBB reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of various aminoglycosides 4- to 128 fold for a highly multidrug resistant P. aeruginosa strain. Moreover, 13-o-MBB significantly reduced the MICs of gentami

Berberine protects cardiac cells against ferroptosis.

OBJECTIVES: Cardiovascular diseases are one of the primary causes of death. Cardiomyocyte loss is a significant feature of cardiac injury. Ferroptosis is iron-dependent cell death, which occurs due to excess iron and reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation causing lipid peroxidation, and subsequent cell death. Ferroptosis has been confirmed to mediate ischemia/reperfusion-induced cardiomyopathy and chemotherapy-induced cardiotoxicity. Berberine (BBR) has been proven to protect the heart from cardiomyopathies, including cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, myocardial infarction, and arrhythmi

Berberine as a natural immunomodulator of B lymphocytes.

B lymphocytes play crucial roles in host immune responses by mediating humoral immunity via the production of various types of antibodies and also contribute to the pathogenesis of a wide range of inflammatory, autoimmune, and neoplastic disorders. Recently, considerable literature has grown around the naturally occurring compounds immunomodulatory potential. In this regard, berberine (BBR) is an isoquinoline alkaloid with unique pharmacological actions including anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-microbial, and anti-tumor activity, which arises from its polytrophic pharmacological and bioc

Berberine: A Promising Treatment for Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Berberine, as a natural alkaloid compound, is characterized by a diversity of pharmacological effects. In recent years, many researches focused on the role of berberine in central nervous system diseases. Among them, the effect of berberine on neurodegenerative diseases has received widespread attention, for example Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and so on. Recent evidence suggests that berberine inhibits the production of neuroinflammation, oxidative, and endoplasmic reticulum stress. These effects can further reduce neuron damage and apoptosis. Although the c

Berberine for Appetite Suppressant and Prevention of Obesity.

Berberine (BBR), a natural plant product, has been shown to have antidiabetic, cholesterol-reducing effects. To investigate the action of BBR as appetite suppressants, two experimental protocols were performed. In the first experiment, the mice were fed either a normal-chow diet or a high-fat diet (HF). The mice received daily intraperitoneal injections of BBR (10 mg/kg or saline at 1 ml/kg) for 3 weeks. To determine the antiobesity effects of BBR, the food consumption, body weight, fat contents, serum leptin, and glucose level were investigated. In the second experiment, we set out to validat

The effect of berberine on bilirubin excretion in the rat.

Berberine-containing herbs have been used in folk medicine to relieve neonatal jaundice. In the present investigation, the acute and chronic effects of berberine on bilirubin excretion were studied in rats. Acute doses of berberine were found to increase the secretion of bilirubin in experimental hyperbilrubinemia without affecting the UDP-glucuronyltransferase activity and BSP clearance. Continuous treatment abolished this effect. This apparent tolerance could be attributed to the inhibitory action of chronic berberine treatment on UDP-glucuronyltransferase activity, but the mechanism of this

Evaluation of Berberine as an Adjunct to TB Treatment.

Tuberculosis (TB) is the global health problem with the second highest number of deaths from a communicable disease after COVID-19. Although TB is curable, poor health infrastructure, long and grueling TB treatments have led to the spread of TB pandemic with alarmingly increasing multidrug-resistant (MDR)-TB prevalence. Alternative host modulating therapies can be employed to improve TB drug efficacies or dampen the exaggerated inflammatory responses to improve lung function. Here, we investigated the adjunct therapy of natural immune-modulatory compound berberine in C57BL/6 mouse model of pul
