Thirteen lignans, including three new monomers berpruins A-C (1, 3, and 4), were isolated from the roots of Berberis pruinosa. The structures of these lignans were identified through the comprehensive analysis of their spectroscopic data (including NMR, CD, and HRESIMS) and physicochemical properties. Berpruins A-C (1, 3, and 4) are the first examples of formylated lignan isolated from plants. Compound 4 exhibited moderate in vitro antimalarial activity with an inhibitory rate of 74.8 ± 2.5% at a concentration of 50 μM.

Berberis vulgaris is a widely used plant for the treatment of urolithiasis. To evaluate its antiurolithic potential, the crude aqueous-methanol extract of Berberis vulgaris root bark (Bv.Cr) was tested in an animal model of urolithiasis, developed in male Wistar rats by adding 0.75% ethylene glycol in drinking water. Bv.Cr (50 mg/kg) inhibited CaOx crystal deposition in renal tubules and protected against associated changes including polyuria, weight loss, impaired renal function and the development of oxidative stress in kidneys. Activity-guided fractionation revealed the concentration of ant

One-hundred and thirty day-old broiler chickens were kept for 6 days and on the seventh day, 120 chickens were selected and randomly divided into 5 groups with 2 replicates. To cause ascites, an amount of 0.12% sodium was added to the drinking water of 4 groups of chickens. On the fourteenth day, the amount of sodium was increased to 0.24% and at the same time, treatment with acetylosalicylic acid and berberis was started. At the age of 14 and 21 days, random sample chickens from each replicate were necropsied and were examined in terms of the factors associated with ascites. The results showe

Popularity of herbal drugs is increasing all over the world because of lesser side effects as compared to synthetic drugs. Besides, it costs less and easily available to poor people particularly in developing countries. But quality assurance of herbal drugs is very necessary prior to its use. Because in today's polluted environment, even herbal drugs are not safe. Berberis spp. is very important medicinal plant, having various medicinal properties. It is also included in Indian and British pharmacopoeias. Its demand is quite high in herbal drug market. So, to check the quality of market sample
