Bereavement care begins during the terminal phase of motor neurone disease as the family prepare for the death. Due to the long-term nature of the illness there is a need to allow the expression of painful feelings and to ensure that the family is adequately supported. The responsibility for care in bereavement lies not only with the family but with the health care professions, bereavement support groups and the whole community.

Bereavement is the reaction to the loss of a loved one by death and usually occurs in three stages: numbness, depression, and recovery. The length of time it takes for bereavement to resolve varies from person to person. During the depression stage, the bereaved person may experience all the symptoms of the typical depressed patient, with the exception of retardation. However, a depressed patient has more symptoms than a bereaved person and reports feeling changed, not his or her usual self, whereas the bereaved person expects to have such symptoms. The essence of the morbidity of bereavement

The clinical significance of the depressions of bereavement is controversial. Although evidence suggests that most of these depressions remit spontaneously, some of them do require professional attention. Using a trained, non-professional screener, a study to screen for depressions of bereavement at 6 and 12 months after loss of a spouse was performed to determine the rate of depression and its characteristics. The relative value of using a dimensional assessment of depression (20-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression [CES-D] Scale) and a structured diagnostic schedule for depressio

BACKGROUND AND METHOD: In the otherwise a-theoretical diagnostic manual, the DSM-III and IV bereavement exclusion for the diagnosis of major depression (MDD) stands out as the sole exception to the rule. No other life event excludes the diagnosis of any other axis I disorder. Since this diagnostic convention has important diagnostic and treatment implications, it is important to evaluate the validity of this exception. By comparing multiple features of bereavement related to non-bereavement related MDD, this prospective community study critically evaluates the validity of the bereavement exclu

Although spousal bereavement in late life is common and frequently leads to major depression, the boundary between bereavement without a depressive syndrome and bereavement-related depression has been insufficiently studied from a physiological perspective. Because other forms of depression are associated with physiological changes, including sleep, we have attempted to clarify the relationship of bereavement and bereavement-related depression by investigating electroencephalographic (EEG) sleep in 31 elderly volunteers with recent spousal bereavement, stratified by the presence (n = 15) or th

This is a one-year prospective study of one hundred and five 2 to 17 year old children of a consecutive sample of young widows and widowers in the community and of the children of controls. The children's reactions to the parental death were recorded at one month and thirteen months after the event in a structured interview with the surviving parent. The interview included items of general adaption to the death, school performance, behaviour problems, symptoms relevant to psychopathological manifestations (depression, anxiety, etc.) and general health. The results indicate a significant increa

Bereavement is a common experience in adults aged 60 and older. Loss of a loved one usually leads to acute grief characterized by yearning and longing, decreased interest in ongoing activities, and frequent thoughts of the deceased. For most, acute grief naturally evolves into a state of integrated grief, where the bereaved is able to reengage with everyday activities and find interest or pleasure. About 7 % of bereaved older adults, however, will develop the mental health condition of Complicated Grief (CG). In CG, the movement from acute to integrated grief is derailed, and grief symptoms re

Early notions of mania invoked a combination of psychogenic and organic factors, but psychogenic mania has not endured as a concept. We present a 37-year-old woman with an acute manic episode precipitated by the prolonged death of her husband from cancer. To our knowledge this is the first published account of 'maniacal grief' in the absence of pre-existing affective disorder, and with clear causal relations. Mania was clearly induced by the bereavement and we argue that the loss represented more than a non-specific life event. This case supports a re-examination of mania as potentially a 'rea

The Psychiatric Consultation Service at Massachusetts General Hospital sees medical and surgical inpatients with comorbid psychiatric symptoms and conditions. During their twice-weekly rounds, Dr Stern and other members of the Consultation Service discuss diagnosis and management of hospitalized patients with complex medical or surgical problems who also demonstrate psychiatric symptoms or conditions. These discussions have given rise to rounds reports that will prove useful for clinicians practicing at the interface of medicine and psychiatry. Prim Care Companion CNS Disord 2026;28(1):25f0408

The prevalence of parental bereavement was determined in 50 married female outpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of agoraphobia and in a control group of married female outpatients diagnosed as having non-psychotic psychiatric disorders other than agoraphobia. The two groups were matched for age and overall severity of psychiatric symptoms. Compared with the general population, the patient control group reported a statistically significant excess of parental, but not maternal, bereavement. The agoraphobic group was significantly younger than the control group at the time of parental loss. These

OBJECTIVE: To compare the phenomenology and course of bereavement-related depression to depression that occurred later in the course of bereavement and to depression in non-bereaved youth.
METHOD: This sample is drawn from a cohort of parentally bereaved youth and non-bereaved controls followed for approximately 5 years. Three groups of depressed youth were compared with respect to symptoms, severity, duration, risk for recurrence, and correlates and risk factors: (1) a group with bereavement-related depression (BRD, n = 42), with the onset of a depressive episode within the first 2 months af

The Aarhus Bereavement Study (TABstudy) was established to assess the health and societal impact of bereavement and pathological grief. This is the first register-identified bereavement cohort, linked to a longitudinal survey on grief, with non-bereaved controls. The entire cohort (N = 68,960), followed from Danish register creation until 2030, includes annual data on socio-economic demographics, income, workforce, government financial assistance, education, incidence of somatic health conditions, incidence of psychiatric health conditions, prescription medication sales, and cause of mortality

Bereavement support is a required practice standard for comprehensive palliative care. However, research to guide supportive care for fathers who experience child loss is scarce. This article presents selected findings illuminating fathers' need for support, which emerged from a phenomenological study describing fathers' lived bereavement experience. Eleven participating fathers from the United States and Canada discussed their need for support, which was limited and difficult to access. They offered their perspectives of peer support groups and professional mental health counseling. Participa

"Ask not for whom the bells toll; they toll for thee." John Donne's admonition, though written 350 years ago, endures with astonishing freshness; it speaks to something self-evident, to a truth that is well known to many who have experienced bereavement--that the death of a significant other has the potential to hurl the survivor into a confrontation with his/her own death. A confrontation with death--should we seek it? There is evidence in the clinical literature that in terminally ill patients such a confrontation may lead to pronounced positive psychological changes. BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic severely disrupted bereavement care, posing risks of long-term physical and mental health consequences. To ensure the lived experience was captured during this challenging time, a national survey was conducted to examine the Irish population's experiences of dying, death, and bereavement during the pandemic.
METHODS: A mixed-methods survey study was conducted between November 2021 and February 2022. Using purposive sampling, a sample of adults completed a 38-question survey. Of the 2,259 participants who completed the survey, 1,223 reported one or more bereav

Reports the results of an informal survey of over seventy emergency room (ER) nurses regarding the risk of infection to the bereaved due to blood and body fluid exposure when they are in contact with the deceased shortly after death. Results indicated that the nurses never considered the possibility of this risk. Notes that although the risk of HIV is less likely due to the fragile nature of the virus, hepatitis B and other infectious diseases can be transmitted. Suggests that hospital chaplains are in a unique position to assist in the protection of the bereaved from this potential hazard.
