Children's explanations for success shape implicit bias.

Children's social preferences often mirror societal hierarchies, favoring higher-status and more successful groups. How children explain why some groups succeed while others do not may contribute to the development of these preferences. Attributing disparities to internal factors, such as effort or ability, risks instilling bias, whereas recognizing structural differences in access to opportunity may mitigate it. Across two studies, we examined children's reasoning about internal and structural explanations for a novel group disparity and whether these explanations impacted their social evalua

Implicit Racial Bias in Medical School Admissions.

PROBLEM: Implicit white race preference has been associated with discrimination in the education, criminal justice, and health care systems and could impede the entry of African Americans into the medical profession, where they and other minorities remain underrepresented. Little is known about implicit racial bias in medical school admissions committees. APPROACH: To measure implicit racial bias, all 140 members of the Ohio State University College of Medicine (OSUCOM) admissions committee took the black-white implicit association test (IAT) prior to the 2012-2013 cycle. Results were collate

Implicit Bias in Health Professionals: A Scoping Review.

Implicit bias, automatic attitudes or stereotypes outside conscious awareness, may influence clinicians' communication, diagnosis, and treatment decisions, contributing to inequities in care. We conducted a scoping review to map measurement strategies used to assess implicit bias among health professionals and students in healthcare and training settings. Using Joanna Briggs Institute guidance and PRISMA-ScR, we searched PubMed, Embase, BVS, Google Scholar, and institutional repositories for studies to November 2025; two reviewers independently screened and charted data (protocol was developed

Implicit Racial Bias and Unintentional Harm in Vascular Care.

IMPORTANCE: Implicit bias may influence physician treatment decisions and contribute to Black-White health disparities. There are limited data linking implicit bias with actual care delivery and outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether implicit racial bias is associated with potentially harmful surgical treatment selection for a cohort of patients with peripheral artery disease-related claudication. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This survey study, linked with observational registry data, included eligible clinicians who participate in the Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI) among 960 cen

Implicit consequentiality bias in English: A corpus of 300+ verbs.

This study provides implicit verb consequentiality norms for a corpus of 305 English verbs, for which Ferstl et al. (Behavior Research Methods, 43, 124-135, 2011) previously provided implicit causality norms. An online sentence completion study was conducted, with data analyzed from 124 respondents who completed fragments such as "John liked Mary and so…". The resulting bias scores are presented in an Appendix, with more detail in supplementary material in the University of Sussex Research Data Repository (via https://doi.org/10.25377/sussex.c.5082122 ), where we also present lexical and seman

Explicit and implicit memory bias in panic disorder with agoraphobia.

Thirty patients with a diagnosis of panic disorder with agoraphobia and 30 normal controls were compared on explicit memory (cued recall) and implicit memory (word stem completion) for positive, neutral, social threat, and physical threat words. The panic patients showed an explicit memory bias, but no implicit memory bias, for physical threat words. The index of explicit memory bias for physical threat words was found to correlate with anxiety sensitivity and degree of agoraphobic fear and avoidance. The index of baseline bias for threat words on the word completion task, on the other hand, c

Implicit Racial Bias in Evaluation of Neonatal Opioid Withdrawal Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To assess implicit bias by administrating the Modified Finnegan Score (MFS) for quantifying neonatal opioid withdrawal and to evaluate risk of decreased opioid treatment of Black versus White infants. STUDY DESIGN: Study participants were nurses recruited from a large tertiary care center who received three clinical vignettes portraying withdrawing infants and were randomized to receive an accompanying photo of either a Black or White infant. MFS results were compared for identical vignettes based on race of infant photo. RESULTS: Out of 275 nurses, 70 completed the survey. In vig

VR Disability Simulation Reduces Implicit Bias Towards Persons With Disabilities.

This article investigates how experiencing Virtual Reality (VR) Disability Simulation (DS) affects information recall and participants' implicit association towards people with disabilities (PwD). Implicit attitudes are our actions or judgments towards various concepts or stereotypes (e.g., race) which we may or may not be aware of. Previous research has shown that experiencing ownership over a dark-skinned body reduces implicit racial bias. We hypothesized that a DS with a tracked Head Mounted Display (HMD) and a wheelchair interface would have a significantly larger effect on participants' i

Proactive engagement of cognitive control modulates implicit approach-avoidance bias.

Implicit social-affective biases-reflected in a propensity to approach positive and avoid negative stimuli-have been documented in humans with paradigms, such as the Approach-Avoidance Task (AAT). However, the degree to which preemptively engaging cognitive control can help to down-regulate those behavioral tendencies remains poorly understood. While undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), 24 healthy participants completed a cued version of the AAT, in which they responded to pictures of happy or angry faces by pulling a joystick toward themselves (approach) or pushing the joy

Clinician Implicit Racial Bias and Contraceptive Counseling in the United States.

Objective: Unequal treatment of patients based on race or ethnicity still exists in reproductive health. One possible reason is clinician bias. While explicit bias has been studied in relation to contraception, the influence of a clinician's implicit bias on contraceptive recommendations has not been examined. We sought to assess the degree of implicit racial bias among reproductive health clinicians and to determine whether bias correlates with recommendations for contraception. Methods: Clinicians were approached in-person at multiple hospitals in New York City and one national conference ov

Racial Implicit Bias and Communication Among Physicians in a Simulated Environment.

IMPORTANCE: Racial implicit bias can contribute to health disparities through its negative influence on physician communication with Black patients. Interventions for physicians to address racial implicit bias in their clinical encounters are limited by a lack of high-fidelity (realistic) simulations to provide opportunities for skill development and practice. OBJECTIVE: To describe the development and initial evaluation of a high-fidelity simulation of conditions under which physicians might be influenced by implicit racial bias. Exploring Pediatricians' Implicit Bias Related to Newborns' Intellectual Disability Risk: Merged Vignette and Implicit Association Test (IAT) Results.

This pilot study was designed to assess pediatricians' bias about intellectual disability (ID); whether symptoms suggesting Down syndrome (DS), meconium aspiration syndrome (MAS), cerebral palsy (CP), and fetal alcohol effects (FAE) predict lower ratings of infant potential versus controls; and whether proposed advice to parents of a likely DS diagnosis versus another diagnosis (such as meconium aspiration syndrome) would be more negative. Pediatricians (N = 56) completed an implicit association test (IAT) for intellectual disability (ID) plus an experimental vignette survey about a few days'

Assessing underlying processes of implicit weight bias: a diffusion model analysis.

Weight bias is a widespread issue, yet its cognitive mechanisms remain unclear. Using cognitive modeling across two studies ([Formula: see text] = 164, [Formula: see text] = 60), we investigated the processes underlying implicit weight bias. We assessed implicit weight bias with an Affective Priming-like Task, in which participants see a prime and then classify adjectives as positive or negative. Despite instructions to ignore the prime, responses are typically faster when prime and target share the same valence. In our studies, participants were primed with four gender-matched body shapes, of

Using Mask-Making to Foster Growth Mindset and Address Implicit Bias.

INTRODUCTION: Implicit biases, defined as unconscious attitudes influencing clinical decisions, can negatively affect patient care and contribute to health care disparities. Growth mindset-the belief that abilities can be developed through effort-encourages learners to view biases as modifiable rather than fixed. The mask expression project is an educational activity designed to foster growth mindset in first-year medical students and promote patient-centered care. METHODS: Three hundred five (305) first-year medical students completed the project during a service-learning course. Students wr

Does Implicit Racial Bias Affect Auditory-Perceptual Evaluations of Dysphonic Voices?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to understand the role of implicit racial bias in auditory-perceptual evaluations of dysphonic voices by determining if a biasing effect exists for novice listeners in their auditory-perceptual ratings of Black and White speakers. METHOD: Thirty speech-language pathology graduate students at Boston University listened to audio files of 20 Black speakers and 20 White speakers of General American English with voice disorders. Listeners rated the overall severity of dysphonia of each voice heard using a 100-unit visual analog scale and completed the Harvard

Implicit and explicit memory bias for threat in post-traumatic stress disorder.

We investigated explicit (cued recall) and implicit (word completion) memory in Vietnam combat veterans with (n = 24) and without (n = 24) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Half of the subjects in each group encoded combat, social threat, positive, and neutral words elaboratively, whereas the others encoded these words nonelaboratively. On the cued recall test, under both encoding conditions, both groups recalled more combat words than other words. However, difference scores obtained by subtracting the mean recall for neutral words from the mean recall scores for the other words revealed

Slow-wave sleep in the TPJ is linked to individual differences in implicit bias.

Implicit biases can profoundly impact social interactions and decision-making processes. Here, we investigate whether the heterogeneity of implicit racial bias can be explained by interindividual differences in the intracortical distribution of slow-wave activity (SWA), a marker of sleep depth. Using high-density EEG, we recorded sleep data from 52 healthy adults (27 females) during a typical night's sleep in their homes. Implicit racial bias was measured using the race Implicit Association Test (IAT). Whole-brain corrected source localization analysis identified a significant association betw

Implicit bias to food and body cues in eating disorders: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Rigid, restrictive eating patterns, fear of gaining weight, body image concerns, but also binge eating episodes with loss of control leading to overweight, at times followed by compensatory measures to control weight, are typical symptoms in eating disorders (EDs). The regulation of food intake in EDs may underlie explicit processes that require cognitive insight and conscious control or be steered by implicit mechanisms that are mostly automatic, rapid, and associated with affective-rather than cognitive-processing. While introspection is not capable of assessing implicit response

Reduction of implicit cognitive bias with cathodal tDCS to the left prefrontal cortex.

Implicit associations can interfere with cognitive operations and behavioral decisions without direct intention. Enhancement of neural activity with anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) was proposed to reduce implicit associations by means of improved cognitive control. However, a targeted reduction of distractive implicit associations by inhibitory cathodal tDCS, recently shown in spatial-numerical associations, provides an interesting alternative approach to support goal-directed behavior with transcranial brain stimulation. To test this rationale with a sham-controlled cros
