Handlebar problems are common among serious bicyclists. Compression neuropathy, more commonly ulnar than median, is frequent but seldom produces permanent injury or deficit if promptly recognized and managed by attending to bicycle fit, energy-absorbing gloves and handlebar treatments, and cycling technique. Overuse symptoms may be seen if bicycle design and fit couple with repetitive motion to aggravate wrist tendons or connective tissues of the neck and shoulder. Mechanical and medical management are effective in relieving symptoms and preventing recurrence.

This study was designed to measure the O2 uptake (VO2) of cyclists while they rode outdoors at speeds from 32 to 40 km/h. Regression analyses of data from 92 trials using the same wheels, tires, and tire pressure with the cyclists riding in their preferred gear and in an aerodynamic position indicated the best equation (r = 0.84) to estimate VO2 in liters per minute VO2 = -4.50 + 0.17 rider speed + 0.052 wind speed + 0.022 rider weight where rider and wind speed are expressed in kilometers per hour and rider weight in kilograms. Following another rider closely, i.e., drafting, at 32 km/h reduc

Back and neck problems in bicyclists should be managed by a combination of bicycle adjustment or modification, technique change, and medical treatment. The bicycle should be checked for proper fit. Often it is necessary to relieve the rider's extended position by using handlebars with less drop, using a stem with a shorter extension, raising the stem, or moving the seat forward. Changing hand positions on the handlebars frequently, riding with the elbows "unlocked," varying head position, using padded gloves and handlebars, and riding on wider tires all reduce the effects of road shock. PURPOSE: Bicycle riding is one of the most popular means of transportation, recreation, fitness and sports among millions of people of all ages who ride on road and off road, using a variety of bicycle types. It is also a readily available form of aerobic non-impact exercise with established cardiovascular beneficial effects. Bicycles are also a common source of significant injuries. This review focuses upon the specific bicycling related overuse injuries affecting the genitourinary tract.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: MEDLINE search of the literature on bicycling and genitourinary disorders was per

This paper describes the design and accuracy evaluation of a dynamometric pedal, which measures the two pedal force components in the plane of the bicycle. To realize a design that could be used during actual off-road cycling, a popular clipless pedal available commercially was modified so that both the form and the function of the original design were maintained. To measure the load components of interest, the pedal spindle was replaced with a spindle fixed to the pedal body and instrumented with eight strain gages connected into two Wheatstone bridge circuits. The new spindle is supported by

OBJECTIVE: To describe the mechanisms of injury from crashes during competitive off-road bicycling (mountain biking) and to examine the type, location, and severity of the resulting injuries.
METHODS: We examined and interviewed all bicyclists injured while competing at 7 off-road bicycling events. Information regarding the direction of fall and the presence of a collision or mechanical failure was obtained, and the injury patterns were compared.
RESULTS: There were 97 injured riders, with a mean age of 28.3 years. Most victims were male (74%), and all cyclists wore helmets. Most injuries we

INTRODUCTION: Bicycling is a health-promoting physical activity, but little is known about the factors that influence this behavior in the U.S. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to identify multilevel ecologic correlates of bicycling behaviors in a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults.
METHODS: This analysis, conducted in 2016-2017, utilized data from the 2012 National Survey of Bicyclist and Pedestrian Attitudes and Behaviors (n=7,509; N=246,155,593). Weighted logistic regression models were utilized to examine the association between intrapersonal, perceived environ

OBJECTIVE: To describe the incidence and types of injury and illness treated during a multiday recreational bicycling tour.
METHODS: In July 2001, 2100 bicyclists rode 520 miles from Minneapolis, MN, to Chicago, IL, during the 2001 Heartland AIDS Ride. A volunteer medical staff provided medical care along the route. All patient encounters were recorded in an injury and illness log. Information from the log was used to describe the incidence and types of injury and illness treated during the event.
RESULTS: A total of 2100 riders participated, with 244 patient encounters recorded. The 2 most

Because the bony girdle of the pelvis protects the external iliac artery except where it enters the femoral canal, reports of blunt injury to this artery are rare. Emphasizing the importance of a thorough physical examination and judicious use of angiography, this case study discusses the diagnosis and treatment of an isolated external iliac artery injury rendered by a bicycle handlebar, a previously unreported cause of this type of injury.

BACKGROUND: Concussions among adult bicyclists are common, but little is known about the long-term effects of the consequences of these concussions such as postconcussion syndrome (PCS) including its occurrence, clinical features and recovery potential. Indeed, our study is the first to examine PCS due to bicycling in any age group.
OBJECTIVES: We examined patient demographics, concussion mechanisms and persistent symptoms as factors leading to PCS in adults and the potential for recovery.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 28 patients age 18 or older who sustained a concu

BACKGROUND: Bicycle helmets prevent head injury in bicycle riders. Still, only a portion of bicycle riders in Norway use bicycle helmets. The aim of this study was to estimate the number of head injuries among bicycle riders that might be prevented by increased helmet use in Norway.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We used data from the Norwegian National Injury Register for the years 1995 and 1996 to estimate the number of bicycle injuries in Norway. In order to estimate the number of bicycle users and helmet users in different age groups, we used data from earlier surveys of bicycle use. Data on the e

The bicycle-rider system is modeled as a planar five-bar linkage with pedal forces and pedal dynamics as input. The pedal force profile input is varied, maintaining constant average bicycle power, in order to obtain the optimal pedal force profile that minimizes two cost functions. One cost function is based on joint moments and the other is based on muscle stresses. Predicted (optimal) pedal profiles as well as joint moment time histories are compared to representative real data to examine cost function appropriateness. Both cost functions offer reasonable predictions of pedal forces. The mus

OBJECTIVE: To explore whether the reported increase in bicycle sales in Australia is corroborated by increases in numbers of cyclists.
METHODS: Australian representative data on cycling from annual Exercise, Recreation and Sport Surveys (ERASS) from 2001 to 2008 were used. Based on the weighted proportion of cyclists and 'regular cyclists' each year, the number of 'new' riders each year was calculated. Generous assumptions about the number of new bicycle purchased by new riders plus replacement bicycles by regular riders were compared with industry sales figures.
RESULTS: Any cycling increas

For a very precise analysis of all injured bicyclists in Germany it would be important to have definitions for "severely injured", "seriously injured" and "critically injured". By this, e.g., two-thirds of surgically treated bicyclists who are not registered by the police could become available for a general analysis. Elderly bicyclists (> 60 years) are a minority (10 %) but represent a majority (50 %) of all fatalities. They profit most by wearing a helmet and would be less injured by using special bicycle bags, switching on their hearing aids and following all traffic rules. E-bikes are used

Bicycle riding is a popular form of recreation among persons of all ages, and related injuries cause significant morbidity and mortality. Most injuries occur in males and are associated with riding at high speed; most serious injuries and fatalities result from collisions with motor vehicles. Although superficial soft tissue injuries and musculoskeletal trauma are the most common injuries, head injuries are responsible for most fatalities and long-term disabilities. Overuse injuries may contribute to a variety of musculoskeletal complaints, compression neuropathies, perineal and genital compla

BACKGROUND: Electric bicycles (E-bikes) are an increasingly popular means of transport, and have been designed for a higher speed comparable to that of small motorcycles. Accident statistics show that E-bikes are increasingly involved in traffic accidents. To test the hypothesis of whether accidents involving E-bikes bear more resemblance to motorcycle accidents than conventional bicyclists, this study evaluates the injury pattern and severity of E-bike injuries in direct comparison to injuries involving motorcycle and bicycle accidents.
METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, the data o

Bicycle lanes reduce real and perceived risks for bicycle vs. motor vehicle crashes, reducing the burden of traffic injuries and contributing to greater cycling participation. Previous research indicates that the effectiveness of bicycle lanes differs according to roadway characteristics, and that bicycle lane types are differentially associated with reduced crash risks. The aim of this study is to combine these perspectives and identify the types of on-road bicycle lanes that are associated with the greatest reductions in bicycle crashes given the presence of specific roadway characteristics.

A novel thia-Prins bicyclization approach has been developed for the first time for the synthesis of hexahydro-2H-thieno[3,2-c]thiopyran derivatives from the coupling of homoallylic mercaptans such as hex-3-ene-1,6-dithiol with various aldehydes using 10 mol % InBr3 in dichloromethane with high selectivity. In addition, the coupling of (E)-N-(6-mercaptohex-3-enyl)-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide with aldedydes affords the corresponding N-tosyloctahydrothiopyrano[4,3-b]pyrrole derivatives in good yields. This reaction is a stereoselective affording trans-fused product from E-homoallyllic mercaptan a
