Bifidobacterium adolescentis - a beneficial microbe.

Bifidobacterium adolescentis is one of the most abundant bifidobacterial species in the human large intestine, and is prevalent in 60-80% of healthy human adults with cell densities ranging from 109-1010 cells/g of faeces. Lower abundance is found in children and in elderly individuals. The species is evolutionary adapted to fermenting plant-derived glycans and is equipped with an extensive sugar transporter and degradation enzymes repertoire. Consequently, the species is strongly affected by dietary carbohydrates and is able to utilize a wide range of prebiotic molecules. B. adolescentis is s

Bifidobacterium adolescentis is intrinsically resistant to antitubercular drugs.

Multiple mutations in the β subunit of the RNA polymerase (rpoβ) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) are the primary cause of resistance to rifamycin (RIF). In the present study, bifidobacterial rpoβ sequences were analyzed to characterize the mutations that contribute to the development of intrinsic resistance to RIF, isoniazid, streptomycin and pyrazinamide. Sequence variations, which mapped to cassettes 1 and 2 of the rpoβ pocket, are also found in multidrug-resistant Mtb (MDR Mtb). Growth curves in the presence of osmolytes and different concentrations of RIF showed that the bacteria adapt

Bifidobacterium adolescentis supplementation attenuates fracture-induced systemic sequelae.

The gut microbiota is an important contributor to both health and disease. While previous studies have reported on the beneficial influences of the gut microbiota and probiotic supplementation on bone health, their role in recovery from skeletal injury and resultant systemic sequelae remains unexplored. This study aimed to determine the extent to which probiotics could modulate bone repair by dampening fracture-induced systemic inflammation. Our findings demonstrate that femur fracture induced an increase in gut permeability lasting up to 7 days after trauma before returning to basal levels. S

Orally Administered Bifidobacterium adolescentis Diminishes Serum Glutamate Concentration in Mice.

Several studies have described the contribution of glutamate-transforming microbiota to the development of chronic ailments. For instance, the blood concentration of glutamate is higher in some patients with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and pain. Taking advantage of a naturally occurring strain of Bifidobacterium that is able to transform glutamate in γ-aminobutyric caid (GABA), B. adolescentis IPLA60004, we designed a placebo-controlled intervention to test if the presence of this GABA-producing bifidobacteria in mice was able to impact the concentration of glutamate in the blood in compari

Bifidobacterium adolescentis prevents diabetes-induced liver injury via pyroptosis attenuation.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), along with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), lacks definitive therapy and typically remains asymptomatic until reaching advanced stages. Lipid metabolism and inflammation management using probiotics such as Bifidobacterium adolescentis is suggested to alleviate or suppress NAFLD development. Hence, this study aims to investigate the effects of Bifidobacterium adolescentis treatment on mitigating pyroptosis, an inflammatory cell death pathway, in the liver of rats with NAFLD induced by high-fat diet (HFD) and streptozotocin (STZ) admini

Bifidobacterium adolescentis Strengthens Gut Barrier in Post-Voyage Functional Constipation.

Prolonged periods of sailing may contribute to the development of functional constipation, which can significantly impair an individual's work efficiency. Currently, the efficacy of Bifidobacteria in treating functional constipation is gaining recognition. However, since the therapeutic effects of Bifidobacteria are strain-specific, further research is required on strains isolated from pre-voyage fecal samples. This study examines the role of gut microbiota in post-stroke constipation, aiming to identify specific microbial biomarkers for the development of targeted therapeutic strategies. B. a

Bifidobacterium bifidum Shows More Diversified Ways of Relieving Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Compared with Bifidobacterium adolescentis.

The occurrence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely related to intestinal microbiota disturbance, and probiotics has become a new strategy to assist in alleviating NAFLD. In order to investigate the effect of Bifidobacterium on NAFLD and the possible pathway, a NAFLD model was established by using a high-fat diet (HFD) for 18 weeks. Fourteen strains of Bifidobacterium were selected (seven Bifidobacterium adolescentis and seven Bifidobacterium bifidum) for intervention. The effects of different bifidobacteria on NAFLD were evaluated from liver cell injury, liver fat depositio

Comparative genomic and phenotypic analysis of potential beneficial properties of Bifidobacterium adolescentis.

Certain strains of Bifidobacterium adolescentis inhabiting the gastrointestinal tract have been shown to possess properties that are purported to improve host health. However, given the genetic and phenotypic diversity that has been reported among B. adolescentis strains, it is unclear if and to what extent these traits are conserved across the species. Accordingly, we examined potentially beneficial properties using a combination of genomic and in vitro approaches. Phylogeny inferred from core genomes of 148 B. adolescentis isolates revealed five major lineages. At the functional genomic leve

Structural characterization and immunomodulatory activity of an exopolysaccharide isolated from Bifidobacterium adolescentis.

Bifidobacterium adolescentis is a key probiotic that has been proven to possess various bioactivities. A water-soluble heteropolysaccharide (BEP-1A) was isolated from the probiotic and systematically investigated for the first time. The molecular weight of BEP-1A was calculated to be 9.69 × 106 Da. Combined with monosaccharide composition, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, methylation and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis, BEP-1A was composed of mannose, glucose and galactose at a molar ratio of 0.11⁚4.30⁚1.32. The backbone included β-1,2-Glcp, β-1,3-Glcp, α-1,4-Glcp, α-

Bifidobacterium adolescentis attenuates cardiac remodeling in HFD/STZ-induced obesity-associated diabetic cardiomyopathy.

Obesity-associated diabetic cardiomyopathy is characterized by cardiac structural remodeling and modification of gene expression. Increasing evidence has led to the conclusion that gut microbiota, particularly probiotics, may modulate cardiac health through systemic and molecular pathways. The aim of the current study was to explore the cardioprotective effects of Bifidobacterium adolescentis on cardiac structure and gene expression in a rat model of high-fat diet (HFD) and low-dose streptozotocin (STZ)-induced obesity-associated diabetic cardiomyopathy. Male Wistar rats were divided into the

Bifidobacterium adolescentis-derived nicotinic acid improves host skeletal muscle mitochondrial function to ameliorate sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia significantly diminishes quality of life and increases mortality risk in older adults. While the connection between the gut microbiome and muscle health is recognized, the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. In this study, shotgun metagenomics revealed that Bifidobacterium adolescentis is notably depleted in individuals with sarcopenia, correlating with reduced muscle mass and function. This finding was validated in aged mice. Metabolomics analysis identified nicotinic acid as a key metabolite produced by B. adolescentis, linked to improvements in muscle mass and functional

Bifidobacterium adolescentis protects against necrotizing enterocolitis and upregulates TOLLIP and SIGIRR in premature neonatal rats.

BACKGROUND: Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal disorder that is often seen in premature infants. Probiotics decrease the risk of NEC; however, the mechanism by which probiotics work is not clear. The goal of this study was to evaluate the preventive effect of Bifidobacterium adolescentis in an NEC rat model. METHODS: Sprague-Dawley neonatal rats were obtained by caesarean section after 20-21 d gestation and randomly divided into the following 3 groups: dam fed (DF), formula fed (FF), and formula + B. adolescentis (FB). Those in the FF and FB groups developed NEC aft

Bifidobacterium adolescentis CCFM1447 effectively alleviates osteoporosis by enriching intestinal flora capable of vitamin D conversion.

INTRODUCTION: Elderly individuals exhibit heightened susceptibility to osteoporosis, largely attributable to age-related declines in skin, liver, and kidney function. While vitamin D (VD) supplementation is common, its efficacy is often limited, necessitating reliance on pharmaceutical interventions. Research indicates that the intestinal flora significantly influences intestinal VD metabolism, with probiotic supplementation demonstrably impacting circulating VD levels. METHODS: We employed an fecal fermentation model to screen bacterial strains. After introducing these strains into osteoporo

Bifidobacterium adolescentis PRL2019 in Pediatric Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Multicentric, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Trial.

The gut microbiota plays a pivotal role in gastrointestinal inflammation and immune response since changes in microbiota may result in abnormal neurotransmitter expression, inducing changes in gastrointestinal sensory-motor function and leading to symptom onset in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) patients. The Bifidobacterium adolescentis species has a documented immunomodulatory effect through its ability to produce γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system, which is reduced in IBS patients. This is a multicentric, randomized, do

Bifidobacterium adolescentis regulates catalase activity and host metabolism and improves healthspan and lifespan in multiple species.

To identify candidate bacteria associated with aging, we performed fecal microbiota sequencing in young, middle-aged and older adults, and found lower Bifidobacterium adolescentis abundance in older individuals aged ≥60 years. Dietary supplementation of B. adolescentis improved osteoporosis and neurodegeneration in a mouse model of premature aging (Terc-/-) and increased healthspan and lifespan in Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans. B. adolescentis supplementation increased the activity of the catalase (CAT) enzyme in skeletal muscle and brain tissue from Terc-/- mice, and supp

Peptidoglycan from Bifidobacterium adolescentis enhances IL-10 production in regulatory B cells to alleviate gut inflammation.

The mechanisms by which gut microbiota modulate host immune responses remain incompletely understood. Here, we screened Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains isolated from healthy individuals to identify symbionts capable of suppressing gut inflammation. Among them, Bifidobacterium adolescentis (Bifi-94) induced IL-10 production in mononuclear cells in vitro. Oral administration of Bifi-94 to mice treated with dextran sulfate sodium attenuated weight loss and reduced colonic inflammation scores. In wild-type C57BL/6 mice, Bifi-94 increased IL-10 levels in colonic tissue homogenates without

The level of I-FABP and IgA/IgG to beta-lactoglobulin in mothers at risk for gestational diabetes and in their children: association with antibodies to Bifidobacterium adolescentis and Bifidobacterium breve.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underlying gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and their impact on maternal and child immunity remain unclear. We hypothesize that gut microbiome alterations and increased small intestinal permeability contribute to GDM. Intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) leakage and elevated IgA/IgG against beta-lactoglobulin may indicate mucosal damage and may serve as biomarkers. METHODS: This study evaluated I-FABP and IgA/IgG levels against beta-lactoglobulin in mothers with and without GDM (n=100) and in their children (n=87 at time point 1 (TP1), n=79 at time poin
