Probiotic Bifidobacterium breve prevents DOCA-salt hypertension.

Many probiotics that affect gut microbial ecology have been shown to produce beneficial effects on renin-angiotensin-dependent rodent models and human hypertension. We hypothesized that Bifidobacterium breve CECT7263 (BFM) would attenuate hypertension in deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA)-salt rats, a renin-independent model of hypertension. Rats were randomly divided into five groups: control, DOCA-salt, treated DOCA-salt-BFM, treated DOCA-salt-butyrate, and treated DOCA-salt-acetate, for 5 weeks. BFM prevented the increase in systolic blood pressure, cardiac weight, and renal damage induced

Bacteremia induced by Bifidobacterium breve in a newborn with cloacal exstrophy.

Bifidobacterium breve is an effective probiotic agent used in the field of neonatology. Although B. breve has been considered safe, a case of B. breve bacteremia has been reported. The pathogenic mechanism underlying the bacteremia is unknown. Herein, we report a second case of B. breve bacteremia that developed in a neonate with multiple abdominal organ anomalies. Following surgical repair immediately after birth, B. breve treatment was started. After 1 week, the infant developed B. breve bacteremia following the onset of adhesive ileus. The bacteremia was thought to have been associated with

Protective effect of Bifidobacterium bifidum FSDJN7O5 and Bifidobacterium breve FHNFQ23M3 on diarrhea caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) is the main bacterial cause of diarrhea among children in developing countries and of traveler's diarrhea. In this study, a mouse model was used to evaluate the effect of Bifidobacterium on alleviating diarrhea caused by ETEC. The results showed that B. breve FHNFQ23M3 and B. bifidum FSDJN7O5 could relieve the symptoms of diarrhea. Both strains significantly reduced the stool water content, restored the villi structure in the jejunum and ameliorated the fecal short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) content. In addition, B. breve FHNFQ23M3 restored body weight to t

Protective Effects of Bifidobacterium Breve MCC1274 as a Novel Therapy for Alzheimer's Disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is characterized by memory impairment that significantly interferes with daily life. Therapeutic options for AD that substantively modify disease progression remain a critical unmet need. In this regard, the gut microbiota is crucial in maintaining human health by regulating metabolism and immune responses, and increasing evidence suggests that probiotics, particularly beneficial bacteria, can enhance memory and cognitive functions. Recent studies have highlighted the positive effects of Bifidobacterium breve MCC1274 (B. breve MC

Effects of lactoferrin on neonatal pathogens and Bifidobacterium breve in human breast milk.

Supplementation with probiotics in preterm infants reduces necrotizing enterocolitis and sepsis. Bovine lactoferrin is a promising supplement that may further reduce disease burden, but its effects on probiotic bacteria in human breast milk has not been evaluated. We aimed to characterise the antimicrobial activity of bovine and human lactoferrin in human breast milk against probiotics and typical neonatal sepsis pathogens. Lactoferrin levels were determined by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in fresh and pasteurised human breast milk. The neonatal pathogens Staphylococcus epidermidis and Es

Bifidobacterium breve synergizes with Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides ovatus to antagonize Clostridioides difficile.

The development of ecologically based in vivo microecological formulations for treating Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is a current research focus. Here, we selected three microorganisms-Akkermansia muciniphila (AM), Bacteroides ovatus (BO), and Bifidobacterium breve (BB)-to formulate a mixed bacterial formulation (ABB). Subsequently, we evaluated the ecological interactions among these three microorganisms and investigated their therapeutic efficacy in a CDI murine model. Our investigation revealed the presence of a commensalism relationship among AM, BO, and BB. These microorganism

Two membrane proteins from Bifidobacterium breve UCC2003 constitute an ABC-type multidrug transporter.

Intrinsic resistance to drugs is one of the main determining factors in bacterial survival in the intestinal ecosystem. This is mediated by, among others, multidrug resistance (MDR) transporters, membrane proteins which extrude noxious compounds with very different chemical structures and cellular targets. Two genes from Bifidobacterium breve encoding hypothetical membrane proteins with a high homology with members of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) family of multidrug efflux transporters, were expressed separately and jointly in Lactococcus lactis. Cells co-expressing both proteins exhibited e

Immunomodulatory effect of Bifidobacterium breve on experimental allergic rhinitis in BALB/c mice.

Bifidobacterium breve (B. breve) may have a beneficial effect on allergic rhinitis (AR). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether microbial induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and adjustment of Th1 and Th2 responses by B. breve are associated with protection against allergic inflammation, and to identify a dose-response association in a murine AR model. Ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized BALB/c mice were orally treated with different doses of B. breve [1010, 109, 107 and 105 colony forming units (CFU)]. Following nasal challenge with OVA, sneeze frequency, serum OVA-specific immunog

An older man with Bifidobacterium breve bacteremia, a rare condition in adults: A case report.

Bifidobacterium breve is an anaerobic, gram-positive rod commonly found in the human intestinal microbiota. While rarely associated with bacteremia, most cases occur in neonates receiving B. breve-containing probiotics. Here, we report a rare case of B. breve bacteremia in an 80-year-old man presenting in cardiopulmonary arrest, despite not taking B. breve-containing probiotics. Blood cultures identified B. breve, and an 18-day course of antibiotics resolved the bacteremia. The rarity of adult cases may reflect age-related microbiota shifts and potential underdiagnosis due to the limited accur

Vaginal Bifidobacterium breve for preventing urogenital infections: Development of delayed release mucoadhesive oral tablets.

Bifidobacteria are predominant microorganisms in the intestinal flora, but at the same time represent a subdominant group of the vaginal microbiota. For this reason, oral administration of these probiotic bacteria can provide beneficial effect for both intestinal and urogenital ecosystems. The first aim of this study was to test the strain Bifidobacterium breve BC204, isolated from a vaginal swab of a healthy woman, for its capability to adhere to human cells, to survive to gastric acids and bile salts and to exert antimicrobial activities. The second aim of the work was to develop an oral for

Bifidobacterium breve alleviates dry eye disease by regulating gut microbiota and vitamin A metabolism.

The gut microbiota can metabolize vitamin A and may thereby alleviate symptoms of dry eye disease. Bifidobacterium breve CCFM1489 was investigated, a commensal strain capable of converting vitamin A (VA) into retinoic acid (RA), in a benzalkonium chloride-induced DED mouse model. The results demonstrated that CCFM1489 alleviated dry eye symptoms, as evidenced by reduced fluorescein sodium staining of the cornea, improved corneal and conjunctival histopathology. These effects were accompanied by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation whilst elevating systemic RA levels. Integration of gut m

Bifidobacterium breve promotes growth and lipid alteration in Trichomonas vaginalis transiently through transcriptomic reprogramming.

Trichomonas vaginalis is recognized as the most prevalent non-viral sexually transmitted parasitic infection, establishing its presence in the vaginal microbiota alongside commensal bacteria, particularly Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium species. Notably, a reduction in the population of Bifidobacterium breve has been documented in women infected with T. vaginalis. However, the dynamics of the interaction between T. vaginalis and these beneficial bacterial species remain inadequately understood, warranting further investigation to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and potential implications

Therapeutic Microbiology: The Role of Bifidobacterium breve as Food Supplement for the Prevention/Treatment of Paediatric Diseases.

The human intestinal microbiota, establishing a symbiotic relationship with the host, plays a significant role for human health. It is also well known that a disease status is frequently characterized by a dysbiotic condition of the gut microbiota. A probiotic treatment can represent an alternative therapy for enteric disorders and human pathologies not apparently linked to the gastrointestinal tract. Among bifidobacteria, strains of the species Bifidobacterium breve are widely used in paediatrics. B. breve is the dominant species in the gut of breast-fed infants and it has also been isolated
