Bilophila wadsworthia is an anaerobic, gram-negative, asaccharolytic, urease-positive, bile-resistant, catalase-positive bacillus, originally recovered from infections in patients with gangrenous and perforated appendicitis. Additional isolations from clinical specimens, including pleural fluid, joint fluid, blood and pus from a scrotal abscess, mandibular osteomyelitis and axillary hidradenitis suppurativa are described here. Bilophila is found as normal flora in feces and, occasionally, in saliva and in the vagina. Isolates from humans are usually beta-lactamase positive and therefore resist

This report is the first survey in Italy to evaluate the incidence of recovery of Bilophila wadsworthia in clinical situations. The survey was carried out at the departments of Microbiology in two Northern Italian hospitals over a one-year period. Tests for B. wadsworthia were carried out on a range of specimens from different body sites, when etiology by anaerobes was suspected. Out of a total of 350 samples examined, 67% were positive in bacteriological tests. Mixed anaerobic infections were detected in 53 specimens, corresponding to 23% of all cases. Strains of B. wadsworthia were isolated

Bilophila wadsworthia is an obligately anaerobic, gram-negative rod, which was first described in 1989. The natural habitat of this species seems to be the lower intestinal tract where it was recovered from about 60% of the persons investigated. Bilophila wadsworthia is mainly associated with intra-abdominal infections, but the species was also isolated as part of aerobic-anaerobic mixed infections at various extra-abdominal sites. Otological infections due to Bilophila wadsworthia have as yet not been described. In the present paper, we report a case of a patient with postoperative otitis ext

Although comprising less than 0.01% of the normal human gastrointestinal microbiota, Bilophila wadsworthia is the third most common anaerobe recovered from clinical material obtained from patients with perforated and gangrenous appendicitis. Since its discovery in 1988, B. wadsworthia has been recovered from clinical specimens associated with a variety of infections, including sepsis, liver abscesses, cholecystitis, Fournier's gangrene, soft tissue abscesses, empyema, osteomyelitis, Bartholinitis, and hidradenitis suppurativa. In addition, it has been found in the saliva and vaginal fluids of

Sulfate- and sulfite-reducing bacteria (SRB) are a group of strict anaerobes found within the human gut. Bilophila wadsworthia, a sulfite-reducing bacterium which produces hydrogen sulfide (H2S) from taurine and isethionate respiration, is a common member of the healthy commensal human gut microbiota but has been implicated in several disease states including inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer. Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, one of the most prominent gut bacteria, has sulfatases which release sulfate, serving as a potential substrate for sulfate-reducing bacteria. Here, we showed

Organosulfonates are important natural and man-made compounds, but until recently (T. J. Lie, T. Pitta, E. R. Leadbetter, W. Godchaux III, and J. R. Leadbetter. Arch. Microbiol. 166:204-210, 1996), they were not believed to be dissimilated under anoxic conditions. We also chose to test whether alkane- and arenesulfonates could serve as electron sinks in respiratory metabolism. We generated 60 anoxic enrichment cultures in mineral salts medium which included several potential electron donors and a single organic sulfonate as an electron sink, and we used material from anaerobic digestors in com

Bilophila wadsworthia, a recently described anaerobic gram-negative bacillus, was isolated from blood cultures of two patients with liver abscesses. These isolates exhibited the expected phenotypic characteristics, and identification was confirmed by cell wall fatty acid analysis by gas-liquid chromatography. This is the first documentation of bacteremia due to B. wadsworthia.

The gram-negative anaerobic gut bacterium Bilophila wadsworthia is the third most common isolate in perforated and gangrenous appendicitis, being also found in a variety of other infections. This organism performs a unique kind of anaerobic respiration in which taurine, a major organic solute in mammals, is used as a source of sulphite that serves as terminal acceptor for the electron transport chain. We show here that molecular hydrogen, one of the major products of fermentative bacteria in the colon, is an excellent growth substrate for B. wadsworthia. We have quantified the enzymatic activi

Bilophila wadsworthia, a sulfite-reducing bacterium stimulated by bile acids and enriched under high-fat diets, has been linked to several neurological disorders involving disturbances of motor function and basal ganglia circuitry. However, its potential association with alterations of brain structure remains unclear. Here, we investigated relationships between Bilophila (wadsworthia) abundance and basal ganglia volumes in two independent population-based cohorts combining gut microbiome profiling and brain MRI data. Genus-level Bilophila abundance was assessed using 16S rRNA gene sequencing a

Proliferative enteropathy is an important enteric disease caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. A wide range of host species can be infected by the same bacterium, yet the clinico-pathologic features among these hosts remains almost identical. The disease has been recognized regularly among ratites, but not in other avian families, such as galliforms, even though these suffer uncharacterized enteric conditions. Fresh ileum-colon contents were obtained from 228, 3- to 8-week-old chickens with enteric disease, kept at 14 large commercial farms in the southern USA. DNA was extracted from each sampl

High-fat diets reshape gut microbiota composition and promote the expansion of Bilophila wadsworthia, a sulfidogenic bacterium linked to inflammation and gut barrier dysfunction. The genetic basis for its colonisation and physiological effects remain poorly understood. Here, we show that B. wadsworthia colonises the gut of germ-free male mice fed a high-fat diet by relying on genes involved in microcompartment formation and anaerobic energy metabolism. Using genome-wide transposon mutagenesis, metatranscriptomics and metabolomics, we identify 34 genes essential for gut colonisation, including

Bilophila wadsworthia is a Gram-negative anaerobic bacterium. In current study, it was identified in the bloodstream of a 69-year-old man admitted to the Neurology Clinic at the University of Debrecen, Clinical Centre, Hungary, for internal carotid artery stent implantation. Bacteraemia caused by B. wadsworthia is extremely rare, with very few cases reported worldwide. This case is notable because it is the first instance in which whole-genome sequencing of B. wadsworthia derived from blood was performed. Moreover, the sequence data have been deposited in a public database.

MICs of antibiotics against Bilophila wadsworthia isolates were measured by agar and broth microdilution with pyruvic acid and by Etest. The inoculum size influenced greatly agar dilution. Despite discrepancies in MICs depending on the measurement method used, clindamycin consistently showed potent activity. Broth microdilution and Etest appear to be candidates for laboratory susceptibility testing.

Bilophila wadsworthia is rarely found in the bloodstream. We report the first case of bloodstream infection caused by B. wadsworthia in a diabetic foot patient in China. B. wadsworthia is a normal component of the human intestinal microbiota, and a history of diarrhea may contribute to its translocation into the bloodstream. Due to the slow growth of B. wadsworthia, prolonged incubation was essential for its detection. Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) enabled rapid identification of the pathogen. Early initiation of Piperacillin/Tazoba

BACKGROUND: Bilophila wadsworthia, a strictly anaerobic, sulfite-reducing bacterium and common member of the human gut microbiota, has been associated with diseases such as appendicitis and colitis. It is specialized on organosulfonate respiration for energy conservation, i.e., utilization of dietary and host-derived organosulfonates, such as taurine (2-aminoethansulfonate), as sulfite donors for sulfite respiration, producing hydrogen sulfide (H2S), an important intestinal metabolite that may have beneficial as well as detrimental effects on the colonic environment. Its taurine desulfonation

Odontogenic brain abscesses are uncommon. Eggerthella lenta and Bilophila wadsworthia are anaerobes that are normal components of the human intestinal microbiota. Both can also be found in the oral cavity. We report the case of an 81-year-old man with a brain abscess caused by coinfection of E. lenta and B. wadsworthia associated with periodontitis. The patient underwent a right frontal craniotomy with excision of the abscess. Ceftriaxone and metronidazole were then started, along with levetiracetam. Ceftriaxone and metronidazole were maintained for four weeks, and the antibiotic treatment was

OBJECTIVES: Bilophila wadsworthia is a commensal gram-negative anaerobic bacterium in the human gut that is often isolated from patients diagnosed with appendicitis and inflammatory bowel disease. Although previous studies have indicated that B. wadsworthia can cause and/or exacerbate inflammatory diseases, the precise underlying mechanism remains unclear. In the present study, we explored the inflammation-causing virulence factors of B. wadsworthia.
METHODS: To identify the virulence factors of B. wadsworthia, we investigated the whole-genome sequences of 25 B. wadsworthia isolates. We then
