Bimatoprost is a synthetic prostamide analog that is efficacious in the treatment of open-angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension and other forms of glaucoma. It reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) by increasing uveoscleral and trabecular outflow. When used as a 0.03% topical preparation once daily, it demonstrates sustained lowering of IOP of 7 - 8 mmHg over a 24-h period. The drug has been found to be more effective than timolol. In some studies it has shown greater ability to lower IOP when compared with other prostaglandin analogs; whereas in others all three clinically used prostaglandin analo

PURPOSE: The aim of this communication is to report enophthalmos as a possible new adverse effect of topical bimatoprost treatment.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective case series of five glaucoma patients under long-term topical bimatoprost treatment was evaluated. Documentation with photo and Hertel exophthalmometry was reviewed.
RESULTS: In all five patients a deep lid sulcus, reduced infraocular fat pads and enophthalmos-suspicious Hertel values were found (mean 11.9 mm; SD 2.4). Other aetiologies for enophthalmos were excluded anamnestically and by clinical examination.

PURPOSE: To compare the dose-response profiles of bimatoprost sustained-release implant (Bimatoprost SR) and topical bimatoprost in lowering intraocular pressure (IOP) in normotensive beagle dogs.
METHODS: In 1 study, topical bimatoprost 0.001%, 0.01%, or 0.1% was administered twice daily in the study eye for 5 days. IOP was measured at baseline and up to hour 6 each day. Other studies evaluated the IOP response to a single administration of Bimatoprost SR at dose strengths ranging from 8 to 120 μg. IOP was measured before implant administration and during 3 months of follow-up; IOP in respon

Eyelashes hypotrichosis is a condition indicated by an inadequate amount of eyelashes. Hypertrichosis of eyelashes, characterized by excessive eyelash growth, is a regular phenomenon associated with ophthalmic prostaglandin and prostamide analogs. Recently, the US Food and Drug Administration approved Latisse((R)) (bimatoprost 0.03% solution), identical to the ophthalmic solution for glaucoma treatment, for increasing eyelash length, thickness and darkness in patients with hypotrichosis of the eyelashes. When prostaglandin and prostamide analogs interact with the prostanoid receptors in the ha

PURPOSE: This case report presents the use of bimatoprost 0.03% to help regrow eyelashes on a patient suffering from trichotillomania. Trichotillomania is characterized by repetitive compulsive hair pulling that leads to noticeable hair loss. Trichotillomania sufferers are affected by this condition in many ways including shame, embarrassment, guilt, and lower self-esteem. Although a formal therapy regimen does not exist, current treatment approaches include behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy. In cases where a patient pulls the eyelashes, topical bimatoprost (Latisse) may be used to treat

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to report a case hypersensitive to topical bimatoprost and dexamethasone, but with no responsiveness to both latanoprost and travoprost.
CASE: A 41-year-old Chinese female presented with unilateral glaucoma secondary to iridocyclitis and long-term use of topical steroid. Trabeculectomy only worked for 9 months and then additional topical glaucoma medications were required to control the intraocular pressure (IOP). All commonly used IOP-lowering medications failed, except for bimatoprost, which significantly lowered the IOP. Topical dexamethasone increase

The phenyl-substituted analog of prostaglandin F 2alpha , latanoprost (Xalatan; Pfizer, Inc, New York, NY) is an intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering drug for use in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Latanoprost has been shown to stimulate eyelash hypertrichosis and has recently been proposed as a possible treatment for alopecia areata involving the eyelashes. We report a case of hypertrichosis of the eyelashes caused by the prostamide bimatoprost (Lumigan; Allergan, Inc, Irvine, Calif), a new IOP-lowering drug.

PURPOSE: Despite structural similarity with prostaglandin F(2 alpha), the ocular hypotensive agent bimatoprost (Lumigan; Allergan, Inc., Irvine, CA) shows unique pharmacology in vitro and functional activity in vivo. Unfortunately, the precise mechanisms that underlie bimatoprost's distinctive impact on aqueous humor dynamics are unclear. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effects of bimatoprost and a novel prostamide-selective antagonist AGN 211334 on human conventional drainage.
METHODS: Two model systems were used to test the consequences of bimatoprost and/or AGN 2113
