Hundreds of sites across the United States have high concentrations of perfluoroalkyl sulfonamides (FASA), but little is known about their propensity to accumulate in fish. FASA are precursors to terminal per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) that are abundant in diverse consumer products and aqueous film-forming foams manufactured using electrochemical fluorination (ECF AFFF). In this study, FASA with C3-C8 carbon chain lengths were detected in all fish samples from surface waters up to 8 km downstream of source zones with ECF AFFF contamination. Short-chain FASA ≤ C6 have rarely been in

Mercury is a ubiquitous contaminant in aquatic ecosystems, posing a significant health risk to humans and wildlife that eat fish. Mercury accumulates in aquatic food webs as methylmercury (MeHg), a particularly toxic and persistent organic mercury compound. While mercury in the environment originates largely from anthropogenic activities, MeHg accumulation in freshwater aquatic food webs is not a simple function of local or regional mercury pollution inputs. Studies show that even sites with similar mercury inputs can produce fish with mercury concentrations ranging over an order of magnitude.

Methylmercury (MeHg) is known to biomagnify in marine food chains, resulting in higher concentrations in upper trophic level animals than their prey. To better understand how marine copepods, an important intermediate between phytoplankton and forage fish at the bottom of the food chain, assimilate and release MeHg, the authors performed a series of laboratory experiments using the gamma-emitting radiotracer 203 Hg2+ and Me203 Hg with the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa. Assimilation efficiencies of Hg2+ and MeHg ranged from 25% to 31% and 58% to 79%, respectively, depending on algal diets. Ass

Studies were carried out on interaction of Trichoderma viride with copper and reports bioaccumulation as a mechanism of copper tolerance during growth. There was a marked increase in the lag phase of the growth, which was concentration dependent. At a concentration of 100 mg/L of CuCl2.2H2O, 81% of Cu(II) were removed by 3.4 g/L of the biomass in 72 h. The process was temperature and pH dependent. The maximum copper bioaccumulation occurred at 30 degrees C, pH 5.0. Metabolic inhibitors such as sodium azide (NaN3) and 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP) drastically reduced the extent of Cu(II) bioaccum

Mercury (Hg) contamination is common in stream and river ecosystems, but factors mediating Hg cycling in the flowing waters are much less understood than inthe lakes and wetlands. In this study, we examined the spatial patterns of methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in the dominant groups of aquatic insect larvae across a network of streams (drainage area ranging from 0.5 to 150 km2) in northern California during summer baseflow conditions. We found that, with the exception of water striders, all invertebrate groups showed significant (p < 0.05) increases in MeHg concentrations with drainage a

Bioaccumulation potential in aquatic biota is typically expressed using ratios of chemical concentrations in organism tissue (typically whole body) relative to chemical exposure concentrations, such as bioconcentration factors (BCFs). Past reviews of metal BCFs for aquatic biota, which account for water-only exposures, have shown that BCFs are often highly variable between organisms and generally inversely related to exposure concentration. This paper further evaluates trends in metal bioaccumulation data by evaluating data for bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) and trophic transfer factors (TTFs)

Three arthropods, Locusta migratoria manilensis, Acrida chinensis, and Paraten-odera sinensis were selected to study the bioaccumulation of total and methyl mercury. Concentrations of total mercury in the tissues of Locusta migratoria manilensis and Acrida chinensis were 0.013-0.154 and 0.009-0.138 mg/kg, respectively, while those of methylmercury were 0.001-0.012 and 0.001-0.006 mg/kg, respectively. Concentrations of total mercury in Locusta migratoria manilensis and Acrida chinensis, which are the primary consumers, are lower than those in their food, while mercury is accumulated more by the

The major source of exposure to Cr for wild birds and mammals is through ingestion with food. Chromium(VI) compounds are absorbed significantly more efficiently (2-10% of dose) from the GI tract than inorganic Cr(III) compounds (0.5-3%), due to the increased membrane permeability of the former. Transfer of Cr(VI) into mammalian fetuses has been documented at oral doses of 500 mg Cr/L in drinking water, and injected single doses of 5 mg Cr(VI)/kg BW in dams were teratogenic. Cr concentration data for mammalian and avian wildlife species and their potential food organisms are scarce. Worldwide,

The possibility of utilizing industrial, urban, and other wastes for the growth of a product which is directly edible by humans is fascinating. However, it is possible that many wastes containing toxic substances, for example, heavy metals, could reach the food chain and produce adverse effects on human health. To this end, we studied the possibility of bioaccumulation of Hg by a mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus, grown on an artificial compost containing this element. Concentrations of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2 mg/kg of Hg as Hg(NO3)2.H2O were added to three groups of the same compost, successively inoc

Global nuclear power capacity is expanding rapidly, with most facilities located along coastlines. Tritiated water (HTO) is a significant radioactive byproduct of nuclear power plants and is routinely discharged into the oceans. Despite widespread release, radioecological impacts of HTO on marine zooplankton remain poorly understood. Of particular concern are jellyfish, which are composed of >95% water and distributed throughout the oceans, potentially rendering them highly susceptible to tritium bioaccumulation. This study provides the first comprehensive assessment of HTO bioaccumulation, or

This study investigated the distribution and biomagnification pathways of total mercury (THg) concentrations in three mesopelagic species in the Tasman Sea: two fish (Diaphus hudsoni, Metelectrona ventralis) and one predatory squid (Lycoteuthis lorigera). THg concentrations in muscle tissue ranged from 0.06 to 0.26 μg g-1 dry weight (DW) and were consistently higher in liver tissue (0.15-0.96 μg g-1 DW) across all species. Species-specific variations in THg bioaccumulation and the liver-to-muscle THg ratio suggested differences in mercury metabolism. Stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) vari

Nanomaterials (NMs) pose challenges in performing bioaccumulation studies in fish and in regulatory interpretation of results. Therefore, a clear guidance is needed to obtain reliable, reproducible and comparable results. By analysing all the available literature, we aim in this manuscript to identify the critical aspects that should be addressed in these type of studies. Seventy-eight studies from a total of 67 published articles were identified in which a variety of approaches were used: aqueous exposure (49 studies), dietary exposure (19), and pre-exposed animals for trophic transfer studie

The bioaccumulation and the main source of total Hg (THg) and methylmercury (MMHg) in the deposit-feeding polychaete Neanthes japonica collected in Jinzhou Bay, China, were investigated. Compared with the historical data, THg bioaccumulation in polychaetes collected in sediment of Jinzhou Bay was distinctly higher due to higher sediment THg concentration, but MMHg bioaccumulation was significantly lower. THg accumulation in polychaetes mainly derived from its accumulation in sediment. However, MMHg bioaccumulation in polychaetes did not correlate with Hg concentration in sediment. Besides sedi

Adenoviruses are among the most promising viral markers of fecal contamination. They are frequently found in the water, sediment and soil of regions impacted by human activity. Studies of the bioaccumulation of enteric viruses in shrimp are scarce. The cities located in the northern coast of the lake systems in Southern Brazil have high urbanization and intensive farming rates, and poor sewage collection and treatment. One hundred (n = 100) Farfantepenaeus paulensis pink-shrimp specimens and 48 water samples were collected from coastal lagoons between June 2012 and May 2013. Water samples were

Hubbard-Hubbard broiler chickens were fed graded levels (0, 1, 10, 100, and 1000 ppm) of pentachlorophenol (PCP) containing less than .0023% octachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (OCDD) for 8 weeks. Tissue samples for PCP, OCDD, and pentachloroanisole (PCA) were cleaned up via gel permeation chromatography and analyzed by gas chromatography employing electron capture detection. Kidney weights were significantly increased by the 100 ppm and 1000 ppm PCP diet. Weights of all other organs including the body weights were significantly lowered by the 1000 ppm PCP diet. Except for the control group, histopatho

Mercury (Hg) bioaccumulation in rice poses a health issue for rice consumers. In rice paddies, selenium (Se) can decrease the bioavailability of Hg through forming the less bioavailable Hg selenides (HgSe) in soil. Rice leaves can directly uptake a substantial amount of elemental Hg from the atmosphere, however, whether the bioaccumulation of Hg in rice leaves can affect the bioaccumulation of Se in rice plants is not known. Here, we conducted field and controlled studies to investigate the bioaccumulation of Hg and Se in the rice-soil system. In the field study, we observed a significantly po

The selective uptake of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) by oligochaetes makes it possible to assess the bioaccumulation of individual congeners in commercial mixtures. Twenty-one congeners from three BDE commercial mixtures (TBDE-71, TBDE-79 and TBDE-83R) and as individual congeners (BDE-77, BDE-126, BDE-198 and BDE-204) were tested on Tubifex tubifex in accordance with the OECD TG 315 "Bioaccumulation in Sediment-Dwelling Benthic Oligochaetes". All the congeners that were spiked in the sediment were detected at the end of the uptake phase and at the end of the experiment. The bioaccumu

Amphibian population declines have been documented worldwide and environmental contaminants are believed to contribute to some declines. Maternal transfer of bioaccumulated contaminants to offspring may be an important and overlooked mechanism of impaired reproductive success that affects amphibian populations. Mercury (Hg) is of particular concern due to its ubiquity in the environment, known toxicity to other wildlife, and complex relationships with other elements, such as selenium (Se). The objectives of the present study were to describe the relationships between total Hg (THg), methlymerc

Cadmium pollution poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems due to its propensity to bioaccumulate and cause toxicity. This study assessed the complex dynamics of cadmium uptake, accumulation and distribution across anuran development to provide new insights into the fate of cadmium burdens during metamorphosis and compare the susceptibility of different life stages to cadmium accumulation. Tadpoles of various developmental stages were exposed to dissolved 109-cadmium and depurated in clean water in a series of experiments. Temporal changes in whole-body and tissue concentrations were a

Current paradigms regarding the bioaccumulation of mercury are rooted in observations that monomethyl mercury (meHg) biomagnifies along pelagic food chains. However, mechanisms regulating the formation of meHg, its initial incorporation at the base of pelagic food chains, and its subsequent trophic transfer remain controversial. Here we use field data from 15 northern Wisconsin lakes, equilibrium aqueous speciation modeling, and statistical modeling to revisit several hypotheses about the uptake, distribution, and fate of inorganic Hg (HgII) and meHg in aquatic biota. Our field data comprise d
