Biocompatible Materials in Otorhinolaryngology and Their Antibacterial Properties.

For decades, biomaterials have been commonly used in medicine for the replacement of human body tissue, precise drug-delivery systems, or as parts of medical devices that are essential for some treatment methods. Due to rapid progress in the field of new materials, updates on the state of knowledge about biomaterials are frequently needed. This article describes the clinical application of different types of biomaterials in the field of otorhinolaryngology, i.e., head and neck surgery, focusing on their antimicrobial properties. The variety of their applications includes cochlear implants, mid

Evolution of nanomaterial Electrochemiluminescence luminophores towards biocompatible materials.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a powerful electrochemical technique for the detection and quantification of molecules, both synthetic and biological in origin. Traditional ECL luminophores are based on organic or organometallic compounds, however nanoparticle-based materials offer the benefits of tuneable wavelengths and narrow emission profiles. Materials based on cadmium have been the most extensively studied for ECL nanoparticles to date. Cadmium based nanoparticles exhibit high levels of toxicity thereby impacting their suitability for mass produced sensing applications. As such, altern

[Influence of material on biocompatibility of intraocular lenses].

There are many types of intraocular lenses (IOL), different in optic features and materials. The first indication for IOL implantation was aphakia after cataract surgery. The problem of aphakia exists as long as cataract is treated, that is at least 45 hundreds of years. Correction of aphakia using glasses is uncomfortable for patients and even impossible in some cases. The invention of an artificial intraocular lens was a crucial event in the history of ophthalmology. Nowadays there are more indications for cataract surgery and implantation of intraocular lens, including correction of refract

Biocompatibility of resin-modified filling materials.

Increasing numbers of resin-based dental restorations have been placed over the past decade. During this same period, the public interest in the local and especially systemic adverse effects caused by dental materials has increased significantly. It has been found that each resin-based material releases several components into the oral environment. In particular, the comonomer, triethyleneglycol di-methacrylate (TEGDMA), and the 'hydrophilic' monomer, 2-hydroxy-ethyl-methacrylate (HEMA), are leached out from various composite resins and 'adhesive' materials (e.g., resin-modified glass-ionomer

Assessment of Staphylococcus Aureus growth on biocompatible 3D printed materials.

The customizability of 3D printing allows for the manufacturing of personalized medical devices such as laryngectomy tubes, but it is vital to establish the biocompatibility of printing materials to ensure that they are safe and durable. The goal of this study was to assess the presence of S. aureus biofilms on a variety of 3D printed materials (two surgical guide resins, a photopolymer, an elastomer, and a thermoplastic elastomer filament) as compared to standard, commercially available laryngectomy tubes.C-shaped discs (15 mm in height, 20 mm in diameter, and 3 mm in thickness) were printed

The safety and biocompatibility of direct aesthetic restorative materials.

Restorative dental materials are among the most important medical devices in terms of the numbers of patients who benefit and the technical sophistication of the products. Many though contain toxic or noxious substances, including potentially sensitising resin monomers, photoinitiators, acidic polymers and glass or ceramic filler particles. Despite this, dental materials are among the safest medical devices in use today, with very few reports of adverse reactions or injuries among both patients or the dental team. This paper considers the potential for adverse reactions to dental materials, cu

Versatile Fabrication of Biocompatible Antimicrobial Materials Enabled by Cationic Peptide Bundles.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are expected to be an alternative promising solution to the global public health problem of antibiotic resistance due to their unique antimicrobial mechanism. However, extensive efforts are still needed to improve the shortcomings of traditional AMPs, such as rapid proteolysis, hemolysis, slow response, toxicity, etc., by exploring AMP-based new antimicrobial strategies. Here, we develop cationic peptide bundles into novel antimicrobial architectures that can rapidly kill multiple types of bacteria including drug-resistant bacteria. Remarkably, cationic peptide bu

Applications of Biocompatible Scaffold Materials in Stem Cell-Based Cartilage Tissue Engineering.

Cartilage, especially articular cartilage, is a unique connective tissue consisting of chondrocytes and cartilage matrix that covers the surface of joints. It plays a critical role in maintaining joint durability and mobility by providing nearly frictionless articulation for mechanical load transmission between joints. Damage to the articular cartilage frequently results from sport-related injuries, systemic diseases, degeneration, trauma, or tumors. Failure to treat impaired cartilage may lead to osteoarthritis, affecting more than 25% of the adult population globally. Articular cartilage has

New Biocompatible Mesoporous Silica/Polysaccharide Hybrid Materials as Possible Drug Delivery Systems.

A high number of studies support the use of mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) as carriers for drug delivery systems due to its high biocompatibility both in vitro and in vivo, its large surface area, controlled pore size and, more than this, its good excretion capacity from the body. In this work we attempt to establish the optimal encapsulation parameters of benzalkonium chloride (BZC) into MSN and further study its drug release. The influence of different parameters towards the drug loading in MSN such as pH, contact time and temperature were considered. The adsorption mechanism of the d

An in vitro model for testing biocompatibility of endodontic materials to bone.

Calvaria from 6-day old mice labelled 4 days previously with 45CaCl2 were divided into test and control halves and each half cultured separately in vitro. Eluents from four endodontic materials, endomethasone, zinc oxide/eugenol, AH26 and gutta-percha were added separately to the culture medium of each test half. After 24 and 48 h culturing periods, the 45CaCl2 in the media and calvaria was measured by a standard liquid scintillation counting technique and a resorption ratio between test and control halves was computed. This ratio, based on cell mediated resorption, was an indication of toxici

Laser Surface Treatment of Polymethacrylate Materials for Biocompatibility Improvement.

Methacrylate-based materials, widely used in dentistry, must possess high biocompatibility with oral cells and tissues. Currently, to improve the integration of orthodontic devices with the biological structures, laser-assisted polymer modification is actively employed. Importantly, functionalization is required only for the surface of the material that directly interacts with the oral tissues. This study presents approaches for laser modification of polymethacrylate materials and evaluates their influence on the proliferative activity of human spleen fibroblasts. Using laser radiation, two ge

The biocompatibility of dental implant materials measured in an animal model.

The biocompatibility of two implant materials, vitallium and poly-methyl methacrylate (PMMA), was evaluated in an animal model in which bone formation and resorption are independent of each other. Neither material accelerated resorption, but formation was inhibited 12% by vitallium and 38% by PMMA. When three PMMA preparations varying in monomer content were tested, the data exhibited a dose-response relation, suggesting that inhibition of bone formation was due to the presence of residual monomer.
