The subfamily Capillariinae includes about 300 species of nematodes parasitizing all groups of vertebrates. Taxonomy and systematics of this parasites have been changed many times because of a difficulty in designation of particular species' features. That's why there are a lot of synonyms in this group. Nowadays most authors accept the systematics, of Capillariinae according to Moravec. Biology and ecology of species parasitizing breeding birds and mammals is well known, however data relative to capillaria of wild animals are fragmentary. Capillariinae parasitize in various part of alimentary

Biodiversity-ecosystem functioning (BEF) experiments seek to improve predictions of how biodiversity change affects ecosystem functioning. Bridging biodiversity change research with BEF experiments can accelerate these efforts. Diverse observational and experimental approaches for detecting and attributing biodiversity changes offer opportunities to re-analyze data from existing BEF experiments and design new ones. This integration helps us examine the effects of all biodiversity-change scenarios-species loss, gain, and turnover. We propose a mechanistic framework for experiments that manipula

Cladophialophora is a genus of black yeast-like fungi comprising a number of clinically highly significant species in addition to environmental taxa. The genus has previously been characterized by branched chains of ellipsoidal to fusiform conidia. However, this character was shown to have evolved several times independently in the order Chaetothyriales. On the basis of a multigene phylogeny (nucLSU, nucSSU, RPB1), most of the species of Cladophialophora (including its generic type C. carrionii) belong to a monophyletic group comprising two main clades (carrionii- and bantiana-clades). The gen

This week in the United States, a Trump administration rule took effect that narrows the meaning of "harm" under the Endangered Species Act by abandoning a long-standing interpretation that recognized substantial habitat destruction as a way of injuring or killing protected wildlife. Actions that directly harm or destroy animals remain prohibited, but altering the places where they feed, shelter, or reproduce may no longer qualify as harm in the same way. This distinction makes little ecological sense. A species cannot be separated from the living system that sustains it. Destroy nesting trees

Ever since the term “biodiversity” was first defined, it has been used in a mixed way, referring on the one hand to the characterisation of living organisms (which is the domain of systematics), and on the other hand to their functional interactions (which are the domain of ecology). This ambiguity has led to the terms biodiversity and ecosystem being used almost synonymously, a mistake that is both epistemologically and politically damaging. To clear up this confusion, the term biodiversity should be reserved for what we observe when we characterise or discover “what there is” (a task for sys

The Program for Biodiversity Research (PPBio) is an innovative program designed to integrate all biodiversity research stakeholders. Operating since 2004, it has installed long-term ecological research sites throughout Brazil and its logic has been applied in some other southern-hemisphere countries. The program supports all aspects of research necessary to understand biodiversity and the processes that affect it. There are presently 161 sampling sites (see some of them at Supplementary Appendix), most of which use a standardized methodology that allows comparisons across biomes and through ti

Soil biodiversity is increasingly recognized as providing benefits to human health because it can suppress disease-causing soil organisms and provide clean air, water and food. Poor land-management practices and environmental change are, however, affecting belowground communities globally, and the resulting declines in soil biodiversity reduce and impair these benefits. Importantly, current research indicates that soil biodiversity can be maintained and partially restored if managed sustainably. Promoting the ecological complexity and robustness of soil biodiversity through improved management

Scorpion venoms are complex mixtures of dozens or even hundreds of distinct proteins, many of which are inter-genome active elements. Fifty years after the first scorpion toxin sequences were determined, chromatography-assisted purification followed by automated protein sequencing or gene cloning, on a case-by-case basis, accumulated nearly 250 amino acid sequences of scorpion venom components. A vast majority of the available sequences correspond to proteins adopting a common three-dimensional fold, whose ion channel modulating functions have been firmly established or could be confidently in

Grapevine (Vitis spp.) is one of the world's most economically, culturally, and biologically important fruit crops, with remarkable diversity spanning thousands of V. vinifera cultivars together with rootstocks and wild relatives. Yet grapevine biodiversity has never been systematically explored at the metabolome scale, despite its importance for chemotaxonomy, breeding, and sustainable viticulture. Here, we present the Grape Metabolome (GM) Project, the first systematic liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) survey of grapevine biodiversity, comprising 462 samples from 126 accessions

This brief review focuses on the properties of bioaerosols, presenting some recent results of metagenomic studies of the air microbiome performed using next-generation sequencing. The taxonomic composition and structure of the bioaerosol microbiome may display diurnal and seasonal dynamics and be dependent on meteorological events such as dust storms, showers, fogs, etc., as well as air pollution. The Proteobacteria and Ascomycota members are common dominants in bioaerosols in different troposphere layers. The microbiological composition of the lower troposphere air affects the composition and

The integration of large, well-sampled collections of bacterial isolates with genomics and experimental methods provides opportunities for 'top-down' discovery of the genetic basis of phenotypes of interest. In a new report, the authors apply this approach to investigate the heterogeneity in manifestations of disease caused by Listeria monocytogenes and demonstrate that a previously uncharacterized cellobiose PTS system is involved in central nervous system infection.

Humanity is urbanizing, with vast implications on natural systems. To date, most research on urban biodiversity has centered on temperate biomes. Conversely, drylands, collectively the largest terrestrial global biome, remain understudied. Here, we synthesize key mechanistic differences of urbanization's impacts on biodiversity across these biomes. Irrigation shapes dryland urban ecology, and can lead to greener, sometimes more biodiverse, landscapes than local wildlands. These green urban patches in drylands often have a different species composition, including many non-native and human-comme

Nature is an opaque concept. Consequently, the term biodiversity conservation has replaced nature conservation in most conservation contexts. We review the conceptual indeterminacies that plague the terms nature and natural but then show that comparable difficulties plague biodiversity. Then, we provide a new theory that sorts out the respective normative roles of naturalness and biodiversity within the ecocentric-intrinsic school of conservation. This is an elaboration on the conservation philosophy presented by Saltz and Cohen (2023). They presented a 3-tiered normative scheme: ultimate valu

The ocean enabled the diversification of life on Earth by adding O2 to the atmosphere, yet marine species remain most subject to O2 limitation. Human industrialization is intensifying the aerobic challenges to marine ecosystems by depleting the ocean's O2 inventory through the global addition of heat and local addition of nutrients. Historical observations reveal an ∼2% decline in upper-ocean O2 and accelerating reports of coastal mass mortality events. The dynamic balance of O2 supply and demand provides a unifying framework for understanding these phenomena across scales from the global ocea

The unprecedented loss of biological diversity from anthropogenic causes has profound impacts on human health. One way that biodiversity loss threatens human health is by exacerbating risk and incidence of infectious diseases. This paper briefly reviews two zoonotic diseases--West Nile virus (WNV) illness and Lyme disease (LD)--in which high diversity in the community of vertebrate hosts for arthropod vectors strongly reduces human risk. In both cases, the primary reservoirs for the pathogen are species that dominate in human-impacted, low-diversity communities. As a result, the generalist vec

To date, ecologists and conservation biologists have focused much of their attention on the population and ecosystem effects of disease at regional scales and the role that diseases play in global species extinction. Far less research has been dedicated to identifying the effects that diseases can have on local scale species assemblages. We examined the role of infectious disease in structuring local biodiversity. Our intention was to illustrate how variable outcomes can occur by focusing on three case studies: the influence of chestnut blight on forest communities dominated by chestnut trees,

Actinomycetes represent a taxonomically and functionally diverse group of filamentous bacteria that are increasingly recognized for their role in environmental cleanup. Beyond their well-established capacity to produce antibiotics and other bioactive compounds, these microorganisms have shown remarkable potential in the degradation and transformation of a broad spectrum of pollutants, including petroleum hydrocarbons (e.g., crude oil, diesel), synthetic dyes (e.g., azo dyes), heavy metals (e.g., cadmium, lead), and pesticides (e.g., organochlorines). In recent years, significant progress has b
