Biochemical production with microbial bioelectrochemical systems.

Microbial bioelectrochemical systems (BES) represent a promising platform for sustainable biochemical production by leveraging microbial electrocatalysis. These systems utilize electrical energy to drive microbial metabolic processes, enabling the recovery of CO₂ into valuable organic molecules such as methane, acetate, ethanol, and other biochemicals. This approach aligns with global efforts to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and create circular carbon economies. The advancement of BES technology requires both scale-down and scale-up strategies to ensure feasibility and scalability. Scale-d

Optimal set of electrode potential enhances the toxicity response of biocathode to formaldehyde.

The autotrophic biocathode was promising as a broad spectrum, rapid-responding and sensitive sensing element for the early warning of toxicants in water. However, we found that the baseline current and the responsivity strongly relied on the cathode potential. Here we poised cathode potentials at 0, -0.2 and -0.4 V to investigate the effect of electrode potential on the sensor responsivity. With formaldehyde as the tested toxicant, the biocathode poised at -0.2 V had the highest baseline current (118.2 ± 10.7 A m-2) and the lowest toxicity response concentration (0.00148%), which exhibited a 6

Micro-microbial electrochemical sensor equipped with combined bioanode and biocathode for water biotoxicity monitoring.

The development of low-cost biosensors for water monitoring is expected to reduce potential risks from contamination accidents. This study reported a novel micro-microbial electrochemical sensor using combined bioanode and biocathode as the sensing element, characterized by a sequential flowing membrane-free channel and a bilateral passive oxygen supply. A decrease in the ratio of number of bioanode to biocathode resulted in a lower power generation, whereas, achieving a similar or even higher toxic response. The voltage was affected by both the flow rate and the acetate concentration. With th

Metabolic Design Patterns for a Regenerative Architecture.

The contemporary home remains trapped in a mechanistic paradigm of twentieth-century resource consumption, where metabolic biological presence is considered irrelevant to the functioning of a building. Presenting the home as a conceptual vehicle for metabolically optimised living spaces in dense urban environments, this paper develops a conceptual framework of metabolic design patterns that enables the staged retrofit of bioreactors, from composters and fermenters to bioelectrical systems, into human-occupied living spaces. By bringing circular resource processing into the heart of domestic li

Synergic degradation Chloramphenicol in photo-electrocatalytic microbial fuel cell over Ni/MXene photocathode.

The abuse of Chloramphenicol (CAP) has become the increasingly serious environmental problem for its harmfulness and toxicity. A novel strategy was achieved by photocatalysis coupled with microbial fuel cell (Photo-MFC) over Ni/MXene photocathode for enhancing the degradation efficiency of (CAP). It was demonstrated that the best degradation efficiency of CAP can reach 82.62% (original concentration of 30 mg/L) after 36 h under the optimal conditions (pH = 2). Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations and high-performance liquid chromatography-mass (HPLC-MS) spectrometry, it was sp

Microbial Fuel Cell and Associated Novel Derived Systems as Bifunctional Technologies to Produce Green Energy and Pollutant-Free Water.

Global energy security and water scarcity are currently two major challenges facing society. Many new strategies and technologies have been developed to address these issues; however, most can only partially solve a single one. Therefore, microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and associated novel technologies have emerged as sustainable, bifunctional solutions for treating various wastewater streams while generating renewable electrical energy through the biochemical oxidation of organic substrates. The basic configuration of an MFC comprises anodic and cathodic chambers, an external electrical circuit,

From compost to clean energy: influence of cathode potential evolution on hydrogen production in bioelectrochemical reactors.

Microbial bioelectrochemical technologies rely on the development of biofilms on electrode surfaces; therefore, a high surface area in packed anodes is advantageous for their performance. In addition, bioelectrochemical reactors (BERs) for hydrogen production require low-cost installation materials to enable large-scale implementation. In this study, a one-liter BER was constructed using 0.38 L of carbon felt as a packed bioanode, 0.65 L of compost leachate as the electrolyte, and a stainless-steel mesh cathode. The reactor was operated under an anode potential of 0.05 V vs. Ag/AgCl (KCl, 3.5

Femtosecond Laser Micropore-Enhanced Miniaturised PCB-Based Microbial Fuel Cell Biosensor for Toxicity Detection.

This study presents a low-cost, small-scale single-chamber microbial fuel cell (MFC) toxicity biosensor fabricated on a printed circuit board (PCB) and a 3D-printed chamber with a volume of 120 μL. The anode consists of a screen-printed carbon electrode on the PCB, while the air cathode is a carbon paper electrode. To address poor adhesion of microorganisms to the smooth anode surface, femtosecond laser processing was used to fabricate a micropore array with 40 μm pores on the electrode. This method can create micropores on the anode surface without damaging the screen-printed electrodes, the

Degradation and transformation of linear alkyl-benzene sulfonates (LAS) in integrated constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell systems.

Linear alkylbenzene sulfonates (LAS) are the most commonly-used anionic surfactants in cleaning agents and detergents. Taking sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) as the target LAS, this study investigated the degradation and transformation of LAS in integrated constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) systems. Results showed that, SDBS was able to improve the power output and reduce the internal resistance of CW-MFCs by reducing transmembrane transfer resistance of organics and electrons because of the amphiphilicity and solubilization, however, SDBS with relatively high concentrati

Bioelectricity Production from Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) Using Lysinibacillus xylanilyticus Strain nbpp1 as a Biocatalyst.

Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) function by using microorganisms to decompose the substrate at the anode, producing electrons and protons. These charges are then transported to the cathode, where electricity is generated. Previous studies have shown their promising probabilities for practical applications. MFCs are praised for their ability to address energy shortages and environmental pollution simultaneously. They have the potential to generate electricity directly from organic substances, reducing energy losses that occur during intermediate conversion steps. The main challenge lies in transiti

Performance of trickling bed microbial fuel cell treating isopropyl alcohol vapor: Effects of shock-load and shut-down episodes.

This work investigates the enhancement in the removal efficiency of isopropyl alcohol (IPA) vapor by a hollow trickling-bed microbial fuel cell (TB-MFC) that can be achieved by certain modifications. The effects of shock load and shutdown on the performance of TB-MFC were evaluated. When organic loading (OL) of IPA was approximately 22.1-88.5 g m-3 h-1, the removal efficiency of 85.1-93.8% of the TB-MFC was achieved. With an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 60 s and an inlet IPA concentration of 4.42 g m-3, the TB-MFC achieved its maximum EC of 150 g m-3 h-1, which was 1.7-4 times higher tha

Preparation of a fouling-resistant sustainable cathode for a single-chambered microbial fuel cell.

Two different binder materials of varying water affinity, viz. poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly-tetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and biocide vanillin were tested for cathode fouling in a single chamber air-cathode microbial fuel cell (MFC) constructed with a low-cost baked clayware cylinder and operated under fed-batch mode. PVA and PTFE loadings of 0.5 mg/cm(2) were used for MFC-1 and MFC-2, respectively as a binder; and a 1:1 mixture of PVA + PTFE was used as binder in MFC-3 with same binder loading. Vanillin was mixed with PVA and also applied at a loading of 0.5 mg/cm(2) for MFC-4. Results sho

Nutrients removal and recovery in bioelectrochemical systems: a review.

Nutrient removal and recovery has received less attention during the development of bioelectrochemical systems (BES) for energy efficient wastewater treatment, but it is a critical issue for sustainable wastewater treatment. Both nitrogen and phosphorus can be removed and/or recovered in a BES through involving biological processes such as nitrification and bioelectrochemical denitrification, the NH4(+)/NH3 couple affected by the electrolyte pH, or precipitating phosphorus compounds in the high-pH zone adjacent a cathode electrode. This paper has reviewed the nutrients removal and recovery in

Wastewater Biovalorization for Sustainable Renewable Energy Production: Integration of Energy Storage Technologies.

The shift to a circular bioeconomy has shifted water from waste to a resource for renewable energy and resource recovery. Biological, electrochemical, and thermochemical conversion processes can be used to produce biofuels, bioelectricity, biohydrogen, bio-products, and biogas from wastewater, all of which contain high levels of organic matter, nutrients, and microorganisms that can be used for the production. The intermittency of renewables production, however, and the variability of wastewater composition demand the need to integrate the use of advanced energy storage technologies to guarant

Advancement in Benthic Microbial Fuel Cells toward Sustainable Bioremediation and Renewable Energy Production.

Anthropogenic activities are largely responsible for the vast amounts of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, cyanides, phenols, metal derivatives, sulphides, and other chemicals in wastewater. The excess benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) can cause severe toxicity to living organisms in wastewater. A novel approach to mitigate this problem is the benthic microbial fuel cell (BMFC) setup to produce renewable energy and bio-remediate wastewater aromatic hydrocarbons. Several mechanisms of electrogens have been utilized for the bioremediation of BTX through BMFCs. In the future, B
