The Relationship Between Psychological Factors and Postural Performance under Different Biofeedback Conditions.

The postural biofeedback technique has been of potential interest to postural rehabilitation, as it promotes conscious postural control and reduces sway, ensuring body stability. However, it remains unclear whether the enhanced awareness of postural performance with biofeedback influences psychological states. Existing research suggests that psychological states such as confidence and anxiety regarding postural and fall risk may impact postural control. This study investigated the effects of two postural biofeedback techniques on balance confidence and anxiety, as well as the association betwe

Pilot randomized controlled trial of biofeedback on reducing psychological and physiological stress among persons experiencing homelessness.

People experiencing homelessness report increased exposure to traumatic life events and higher rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder as compared with the general population. Heart rate variability-biofeedback (HRV-BF) has been shown to decrease symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, and PTSD. However, HRV-BF has not been tested with the most vulnerable of populations, homeless adults. The purpose of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the effectiveness of an HRV-BF intervention versus a Health Promotion (HP) active control intervention focused on improv

Changes in Psychological States During Instrumented Biofeedback for Dyssynergic Defaecation and Fecal Incontinence Are Associated With Changes in Patient-Reported Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Chronic constipation and fecal incontinence (FI) are severe and chronic conditions associated with reduced quality of life and distress for those affected. Instrumented anorectal biofeedback has demonstrated efficacy in both conditions and is often described as a learning process, suggesting efficacy is mediated via central cognitive and motivational pathways, but empirical evidence is lacking. The aim of this exploratory study was to seek evidence of change in psychological processes as central mediators of biofeedback treatment efficacy. METHODS: Patients (n = 135) were prospect

The Effect of a Biofeedback-Based Integrated Intervention for Older Adults with Orthostatic Hypotension: A Secondary Analysis on Psychological Health Outcomes in a Non-Randomized Pilot Trial.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Aging-related physical changes and dysfunctions in the autonomic nervous system (ANS) often lead to orthostatic hypotension (OH) in older adults. OH negatively impacts both the physical and psychological well-being of those affected. Previous studies have demonstrated that the biofeedback-based integrated program (BBIP), a multicomponent intervention focused on heart rate variability biofeedback, effectively improves OH, as well as symptoms related to ANS function. This substudy aims to examine the effects of the BBIP on psychological health outcomes among community-dwel

Remote Short Sessions of Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback Monitored With Wearable Technology: Open-Label Prospective Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Heart rate variability (HRV) biofeedback is often performed with structured education, laboratory-based assessments, and practice sessions. It has been shown to improve psychological and physiological function across populations. However, a means to remotely use and monitor this approach would allow for wider use of this technique. Advancements in wearable and digital technology present an opportunity for the widespread application of this approach. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim of the study was to determine the feasibility of fully remote, self-administered short sessions of HRV-dir

Prevalence of sexual and physical abuse in patients with obstructed defecation: impact on biofeedback treatment.

BACKGROUND: obstructed defecation is one of the most common subtypes of constipation, and it is frequently responsive to biofeedback treatment. AIMS: since a history of sexual and physical abuse may be present in patients with obstructed defecation, we assessed the incidence of abuse history in patients with obstructed defecation referred to a general gastroenterology practice, and whether such a history may lead to a different outcome of biofeedback training in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: one hundred and twenty-one patients (17 men, 104 women, age 53 +/- 15 years) with obstructed

Regulating emotion following severe traumatic brain injury: a randomized controlled trial of heart-rate variability biofeedback training.

BACKGROUND: While difficulties regulating emotions are almost ubiquitous after traumatic brain injury (TBI), remediation techniques are limited. Heart-rate variability (HRV) is a physiological measure of emotion regulation and can be modified using biofeedback training. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of repeated biofeedback training for improving emotion regulation difficulties following TBI. DESIGN: Fifty adults with severe TBI were allocated to either biofeedback or waitlist conditions. Treatment consisted of six biofeedback sessions whereby participants were taug

BIOFEEDBACK TRAINING AND TENSION-TYPE HEADACHE.

Biofeedback is a training method, which connects physiological and psychological processes in a person for the purposes of improving his/her physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. In biofeedback treatment, an active role of the patient is stressed for him/her to be able to actively control the physiological and emotional processes. The aim of biofeedback is to improve the conscious control of the individual's involuntary physiological activity. Research has shown that biofeedback, either applied alone or in combination with other behavioral therapies (techniques), is an effective tr

Influencing Cardiovascular Outcomes through Heart Rate Variability Modulation: A Systematic Review.

Psychological stress is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Heart rate variability (HRV)-biofeedback could significantly reduce stress levels and improve autonomic nervous system function and cardiovascular endpoints. We aimed to systematically review the literature to investigate the impact of HRV modulation through HRV-biofeedback on clinical outcomes in patients with CVD. A literature search was performed in the following databases: MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase, and Cochrane from the inception until 1 October 2021. Patients in the HRV-biofeedback group had significa

Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome: an overview of non-surgical treatment.

Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome, which represents one of the major cause of dyspareunia, is a puzzling clinical entity. Although many treatment options have been employed, a rationale therapeutic strategy is still not stated. The present article reviews the most popular medical approaches of such entity (biofeedback, tricyclic antidepressants, interferon psychologic-behavioural therapy, diet modification), as well as those to avoid. Tricyclic antidepressants and biofeedback of the pelvic floor muscles represents the first line effective therapy. Moreover, psychological counselling must support an
