Inhibition of biofouling by marine microorganisms and their metabolites.

Development of microbial biofilms and the recruitment of propagules on the surfaces of man-made structures in the marine environment cause serious problems for the navies and for marine industries around the world. Current antifouling technology is based on the application of toxic substances that can be harmful to the natural environment. For this reason and the global ban of tributyl tin (TBT), there is a need for the development of "environmentally-friendly" antifoulants. Marine microbes are promising potential sources of non-toxic or less-toxic antifouling compounds as they can produce sub

Anti-Adherent Biomaterials for Prevention of Catheter Biofouling.

Medical device-associated infections present a leading global healthcare challenge, and effective strategies to prevent infections are urgently required. Herein, we present an innovative anti-adherent hydrogel copolymer as a candidate catheter coating with complementary hydrophobic drug-carrying and eluting capacities. The amphiphilic block copolymer, Poloxamer 188, was chemically-derivatized with methacryloyl moieties and copolymerized with the hydrogel monomer, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. Performance of the synthesized copolymers was evaluated in terms of equilibrium swelling, surface water

Anti-Biofouling Coatings Based on Ultra-Slippery Surfaces.

Traditional treatment of biofouling with toxic paints or antibiotics has significant limitations and challenges, including negative impacts on surrounding ecosystems and the emergence of resistant microbial strains. Antibiotics often prove ineffective in penetrating the dense and protective structure of biofilms, rendering traditional antimicrobial approaches less effective and leading to chronic infections. Toxic paints, while initially effective in reducing microbial colonization, contribute to long-term environmental contamination and harm non-target organisms. In contrast, novel technologi

Experimental insights on biofouling growth in marine renewable structures.

BACKGROUND: Marine biofouling is a threat to industries working in the marine environment, representing significant costs associated with equipment impairment and loss of performance. In the Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) and other maritime sectors which operate at sea for long periods, an important aspect of biofouling is related to the type and frequency of inspections and biofouling removal procedures. METHODS: This study investigated important parameters of macrofouling ( e.g. composition, including the presence of non-indigenous species, thickness, and weight) from communities growing on

Biofouling control: the impact of biofilm dispersal and membrane flushing.

Pure culture studies have shown that biofilm dispersal can be triggered if the nutrient supply is discontinued by stopping the flow. Stimulating biofilm dispersal in this manner would provide a sustainable manner to control unwanted biofilm growth in industrial settings, for instance on synthetic membranes used to purify water. The response of multispecies biofilms to nutrient limitation has not been thoroughly studied. To assess biomass dispersal during nutrient limitation it is common practise to flush the biofilm after a stop-period. Hence, flow-stop-induced biomass removal could occur as a

Contaminant adhesion (aerial/ground biofouling) on the skin of a gecko.

In this study, we have investigated the micro- and nano-structuring and contaminant adhesional forces of the outer skin layer of the ground dwelling gecko--Lucasium steindachneri. The lizard's skin displayed a high density of hairs with lengths up to 4 μm which were spherically capped with a radius of curvature typically less than 30 nm. The adhesion of artificial hydrophilic (silica) and hydrophobic (C18) spherical particles and natural pollen grains were measured by atomic force microscopy and demonstrated extremely low values comparable to those recorded on superhydrophobic insects. The liz

Novel anti-biofouling and drug releasing materials for contact lenses.

Contact lens users very often become patients of allergic conjunctivitis, which is caused by protein and bacteria adsorption to the eye, because contact lenses easily adsorb proteins and bacteria. However, even if contact lens users develop eye diseases such as allergic conjunctivitis, most of them continue to use contact lenses to avoid interference to daily life or a decrease in their quality of life. If novel contact lenses able to prevent and additionally cure eye diseases can be manufactured, they could improve the quality of life of contact lens users worldwide. Thus, we aim to develop a

Prevention of marine biofouling using natural compounds from marine organisms.

All surfaces that are submerged in the sea rapidly become covered by a biofilm. This process, called biofouling, has substantial economic consequences. Paints containing tri-butyl-tin (TBT) and copper compounds are used to protect marine structures by reducing biofouling. However, these compounds have damaging effects on the marine environment, as they are not biodegradable. It has been noted that many seaweeds and invertebrates found in the sea are not covered by a mature biofilm. This is due to the release of compounds into the surrounding seawater that deter the settlement of fouling organi

Potential applications of 1,8-cineole on biofouling control in microalgae cultivation.

Biological contamination poses a critical challenge to microalgae cultivation, yet effective and microalga-safe control agents remain limited. In this study, 1,8-cineole, a major component of eucalyptus oil, was evaluated as an insecticide to investigate its effects on biological contaminants Euplotes vannus, Brachionus plicatilis, and Tigriopus japonicus during the cultivation of microalage Synechococcus sp., Chlorella sp., and Isochrysis sp., respectively. Results indicated that 1,8-cineole significantly reduced the abundance of the three biological contaminants while causing a negligible ef

Biofouling inhibition by Staphylococcus aureus extracts and their potential use for paints.

For the control of biofouling, some paints based on compounds that are toxic to marine organisms have been used. There is an intensive search for biodegradable solutions that are friendly to non-target organisms. Bacteria have been shown to be a source of compounds with antifouling potential. In this work, the antifouling activity of a strain of Staphylococcus aureus was evaluated. Extracts activity against biofilm-forming bacteria and the toxicity against Artemia franciscana were evaluated. The extracts were incorporated in a hard gel and a paint matrix, and they were exposed to the sea. In b

Laboratory culture and evaluation of the tubeworm Ficopomatus enigmaticus for biofouling studies.

Ficopomatus enigmaticus, a euryhaline tube-building polychaete worm with a subtropical to temperate distribution, is an increasingly problematic fouling organism. In this study, laboratory protocols for maintaining adult broodstock, destructive spawning, larval culture and a settlement bioassay were developed. The method routinely yielded approximately 200 larvae per spawning adult. The mean number of eggs released by females was 1517 and the mean number of spermatozoids per male was 4.425 × 10(6). Fertilisation success, using an initial concentration of 2.5 × 10(6) spermatozoids and 45 eggs m

Impact of biofouling on diffusive gradient in thin film measurements in water.

The technique of diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) is commonly used to assess metal contamination in natural waters. In this paper, we assess the effect of biofouling on DGT measured labile concentrations in water and investigate whether an additional nuclepore polycarbonate membrane on the surface of DGT devices can limit biofilm growth. Simultaneous field deployments of DGT equipped with and without the additional membrane in a canal receiving wastewater were compared. The effect of the biofilm was also assessed in controlled laboratory experiments, completed by the experimental determin

Design and microstructuring of PDMS surfaces for improved marine biofouling resistance.

In this study room temperature vulcanized (RTV) silicone surfaces with designed surface microstructure and well-defined surface chemistry were prepared. Their resistance to marine macrofouling by barnacles Balanus improvisus was tested in field experiments for deducing optimal surface topography dimensions together with a better understanding of macrofouling mechanisms. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surfaces were microstructured by casting the PDMS pre-polymer on microfabricated molds. The master molds were made by utilizing photolithography and anisotropic etching of monocrystalline silicon waf

Biofouling-resistant nanomaterials for non-enzymatic glucose sensors: A critical review.

Biofouling is a significant concern in sensors and diagnostic applications as it results in reduced sensitivity, selectivity, and response time, false signals or noise, and ultimately causes a reduction in the sensor lifespan. This is particularly a concern while developing non-enzymatic glucose sensors (NEGS) that can be used to fabricate implantable sensors for continuous glucose monitoring. Thus, developing advanced materials solutions in the form of nanomaterials that display inherent antifouling activity is imperative. Due to their small nanosized dimensions and tunable microstructures, n

pH-Activated Dissolvable Polymeric Coatings to Reduce Biofouling on Electrochemical Sensors.

Implantable electrochemical sensors that enable the real-time detection of significant biomarkers offer huge potential for the enhancement and personalisation of therapies; however, biofouling is a key challenge encountered by any implantable system. This is particularly an issue immediately after implantation, when the foreign body response and associated biofouling processes are at their most active in passivating a foreign object. Here, we present the development of a sensor protection and activation strategy against biofouling, based on coatings consisting of a pH-triggered, dissolvable po

Effects of the chlorination and pressure flushing of drippers fed by reclaimed wastewater on biofouling.

Milli-channel baffle labyrinths are widely used in drip irrigation systems. They induce a pressure drop enabling drip irrigation. However, with a section thickness that is measured in mm2, they are sensitive to clogging, which reduces the performance and service life of a drip irrigation system. The impact of chlorination (1.5 ppm of free chlorine during 1 h application) and pressure flushing (0.18 MPa) on the biofouling of non-pressure-compensating drippers, fed by real reclaimed wastewater, was studied at lab scale using optical coherence tomography. The effect of these treatments on microbi
