This paper reviews the development of biological monitoring as a method of assessing absorption of pesticides during occupational exposure. An approach to human volunteer studies to estimate the relationship between exposure to pesticides and excretion of metabolites is described and practical aspects of applying biological monitoring to field studies are considered. Case studies are used to illustrate some of the pitfalls of extrapolating from animals to man and to demonstrate the importance of human volunteer studies in establishing a sound basis for biological monitoring for pesticides.

Patients suffering from acute renal failure must undergo dialysis to substitute for the kidney's excretory function. Dialysis is a means of exchange between two solutions: blood and a liquid known as dialysate, across a semi-permeable membrane. This membrane permits the passage of water and aqueous solutions of low molecular weight but not that of the aqueous solutions of high molecular weight such as proteins. Dialysed patients are biologically monitored to prevent the various complications arising from blood dialysis, to check the efficacy of the treatment as well as to reduce the risk of mo

The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between exposure to carbon disulfide, as measured by personal air sampling, and the excretion of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) in urine. The subjects of investigation were 29 workers involved in the production of viscose rayon fibers. The average exposure level was 12.6 mg/m3 (range less than 1-66). The present Dutch occupational exposure limit ("MAC-value") is 60 mg/m3. After logarithmic transformation of the data, the following linear regression equation was found: log (TTCA) = 0.84 log (CS2) - 1.10, wherein TTCA is expresse

Two kinds of measurement: (1) enzyme activities in blood, and (2) unchanged pesticides and their metabolites in urine or blood have been used in biological monitoring for assessing exposure to pesticides. The assays of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in whole blood and erythrocytes are mainly applied to estimate inhibition by organophosphates (OPs) and carbamates. A level at 70% of an individual's baseline or of a mean population AChE activity has been recommended as a reference value for exposure control. The measurement of lymphocyte "neuropathy target esterase (NTE)" activity in subjec

The possibility of biological monitoring of exposure to some volatile, halogenated hydrocarbons will be discussed. Most of these agents are widely used as solvents. All agents act on the nervous system as narcotics and differ widely in toxicity. Most of the solvents undergo biotransformation to metabolites. This allows biological assessment of exposure by measurement of the solvent and/or metabolites in exhaled air, blood, and/or urine. However, the same metabolites may occur with exposure to different chlorinated hydrocarbons, eg, trichloroethanol and trichloroacetic acid from exposure to tri

Occupational health professionals' interest in controlling mercury (Hg) exposure, and the use of biological monitoring in this context, has been ongoing for a number of years. Evidence from urinary Hg results in a number of UK firms who have undertaken some form of biological monitoring or occupational health surveillance suggest that exposure has decreased over the last 10-15 years. This decrease precedes the establishment in the UK of an advisory biological monitoring guidance value (HGV) for urinary Hg and the production of updated medical guidance from the Health & Safety Executive on Hg e

Assessment of environmental and occupational exposure to chemicals can be performed with environmental monitoring (EM) and biological monitoring (BM). Biological monitoring was for a long time considered as a method complementary to environmental monitoring. At present this attitude is changing and in certain areas biological monitoring is applied as the method of choice for exposure and health-risk assessment. This paper examines advantages and disadvantages of those two approaches. In occupational settings environmental monitoring of exposure to VOCs seems to be superior to biological monito

Analytical aspects associated with biological and ambient monitoring are outlined with an emphasis on processing samples at very low concentrations and optimization of analytical methods. Verification of chromium determination in body fluids by means of "Round Robin" tests is discussed. In addition, an approach for indirect valency discrimination of chromium species relevant in biological monitoring is presented. Application of voltammetry for model tests is described. This is aimed at studying the reaction of hexavalent chromium in human plasma. As a result, a natural reducing capacity of pla

Biological monitoring and hygienic monitoring complement each other in assessing occupational exposure to nickel. Biological monitoring is mainly directed to following the exposure of individual workers. In order to estimate exposure from data on biological monitoring, the exposing agent, i.e., the chemical species of nickel involved must be known. Comparisons between exposures are most reliable when made under similar exposure conditions. In particular, when urine is monitored, contamination of the sample from the dust in the air, workers' clothes, and hands, is a major problem. The sampling

A continuous levodopa sensor can improve the quality of life for patients suffering with Parkinson's disease by enhancing levodopa titration and treatment effectiveness; however, its development is currently hindered by the absence of a specific levodopa molecular recognition element and limited insights into how real-time monitoring might affect clinical outcomes. This gap in research contributes to clinician uncertainty regarding the practical value of continuous levodopa monitoring data. This paper examines the current state of levodopa sensing and the inherent limitations in today's method

This review focuses on auto-immune diseases which frequently affect women and can have interactions with pregnancy: lupus erythematosus (LES), antiphospholipide syndrome (SAPL), Sjögren's syndrome (GS), rheumatoid arthritis (PR) and auto-immune thyroiditis. LES may flare at the end of a pregnancy and during post-partum. Its biological monitoring during pregnancy is well established. SAPL is at risk of sterility, prematurity, Hellp syndrome, eclampsia and retroplacental hematoma. The main risk, actually risk is foetal loss by placental ischemia, which has to be well known as 2 randomised studie

Rapid, inexpensive, sensitive, and selective enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) now are utilized in environmental science. In this laboratory, many ELISAs have been developed for pesticides and other toxic substances and also for their metabolites. Compounds for which ELISAs have recently been devised include insecticides (organophosphates, carbaryl, pyrethroids, and fenoxycarb), herbicides (s-triazines, arylureas, triclopyr, and bromacil), fungicides (myclobutanil), TCDD, and metabolites of naphthalene and toluene. New rapid assays have been developed for mercury.

Several biological media have been used as indicators of the fetal body burden of methylmercury and the levels in the primary target tissue, the developing brain. These media include maternal hair and blood. The relative merits of these media will be considered both with regard to current knowledge of the physiology of mercury disposition in the body and also the practicality of field application with respect to sample, collection, transport, storage and processing.

Examples of cases in clinical medicine as well as occupational and environmental health studies are described to indicate the conditions under which reliable results for exposure assessment were obtained through biological monitoring. Biological monitoring is a solution-oriented practical approach. Four check points are described for effective biological monitoring, i.e., identification of the type of biological specimens available, selection of correct sampling time, a sensitive and selective analytical method, and interpretation based on a full knowledge of the metabolism.

Pesticides are used worldwide in agriculture, industry, public health and for domestic applications: as a consequence, a great part of the population may be exposed to these compounds. In spite of this extensive use, knowledge on the health risks associated with prolonged exposure is rather poor, and major uncertainties still exist. Epidemiological observations in man have so far produced little conclusive information, mainly because of weaknesses in exposure assessment. Therefore, information on the type and levels of exposure is fundamental in order to better understand and characterize risk

OBJECTIVES: This study was undertaken to assess reliable biological indicators for monitoring the occupational exposure to inorganic arsenic (iAs), taking into account the possible confounding role of arsenicals present in food and of the element present in drinking water.
METHODS: 51 Glass workers exposed to As trioxide were monitored by measuring dust in the breathing zone, with personal air samplers. Urine samples at the end of work shift were analysed for biological monitoring. A control group of 39 subjects not exposed to As, and eight volunteers who drank water containing about 45 micro

Radiation-induced structural chromosomal aberrations were the only adverse effects found in three workers overexposed to 60Co gamma-radiation. Chromosomal analyses were performed on the 5th and 75th days after exposure. Hematologic follow-up was carried out on the 5th, 12th, 16th, and 75th days after exposure. Hematologic findings did not differ over time in any of the three exposed workers. In two workers, we found dicentric chromosomes, which are conventional indicators for exposure to ionizing radiation.
