Biological specimen banking methodology dictates that when a number of specimens of a particular type are available then the selected specimen be representative of the population in question. It is apparent though that this sorting process may present a formidable task which can be facilitated by employing tomographic transmission techniques using photons. Thus it is possible to discriminate between and discern abnormalities in specimens by obtaining the distribution of the photon linear attenuation coefficient, a function of atomic number and physical density, in sections through the specimen

The accumulation of organic and inorganic pollutants in biological specimens depends, in many cases, not only on the atmospheric deposition or immission and contamination of the biotop, but also on the dynamic properties of the indicator. Thus the analytical data assume properties of process variables. In order to compare them in relation to space and time, it is often practical to refer them to defined conditions of the indicator (stationary phases, time cycles of low dynamics). If the accumulation varies consistently under identical conditions of contamination and if clear functional relatio

Norovirus is recognised as a major cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in all age groups. Information on the genetic diversity of the noroviruses circulating in the 1980s and 1990s, before the development and adoption of dedicated molecular assays, is limited compared with the last decades. Between 1986 and 2020, uninterrupted viral surveillance was conducted in symptomatic children hospitalized with AGE in Palermo, Italy, providing a unique time capsule for exploring the epidemiological and evolutionary dynamics of enteric viruses. A total of 8433 stool samples were tes

Polyaminopathies are a relatively new family of rare genetic syndromes recently described in the literature. These syndromes are involved in the biosynthesis of polyamines, which include putrescine, spermidine, and spermine. Polyamines are aliphatic molecular that are found in most life forms, including humans, and are essential for embryogenesis, organogenesis, and tumorigenesis. The five known polyaminopathies that have been described to date include Snyder-Robinson Syndrome (SRS), Bachmann-Bupp Syndrome (BABS), Faundes-Banka Syndrome (FABAS), as well as neurodevelopmental disorders associat

Availability of relevant biological samples supports both basic science research and patient-centered clinical studies. Establishing a biorepository faces challenges at multiple levels. These tasks include defining mission definition and scope; selection of subjects and sample types; recruitment strategies; timing of collection in the patient's journey; sample logistics and processing; determining what clinical data to collect; ensuring sample integrity on transport, processing, and storage; defining governance structures and oversight responsibilities; clarifying sample provenance and ownersh

Biological materials collected in harsh environments such as archaeological excavations, at crime scenes, after mass disasters, in museums, or non-invasively in the field constitute a highly valuable source of genetic information. However, poor quality and limited quantity of the DNA extracted from these samples can be extremely challenging during further analyses. Here we have reviewed how degradation, decomposition, and contamination can affect DNA analysis, and how correct sample collection and storage methods will ensure the best possible conditions for further genetic analysis. Furthermor

The German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) is one of the German Centres for Health Research and aims to conduct early and guideline-relevant studies to develop new therapies and diagnostics that impact the lives of people with cardiovascular disease. Therefore, DZHK members designed a collaboratively organised and integrated research platform connecting all sites and partners. The overarching objectives of the research platform are the standardisation of prospective data and biological sample collections among all studies and the development of a sustainable centrally standardised st

Inherited kidney tubulopathies comprise a group of rare diseases with a significant societal impact, as lifelong treatment is often required and no therapies are available to prevent progression of renal damage. Diagnosis of inherited tubulopathies has improved with the advances of next generation sequencing. However, difficulties remain, such as a lack of genotype-phenotype correlation and unknown pathogenicity of newly identified variants. In addition, treatment remains mainly symptomatic. Both diagnosis and treatment can be improved by addition of in vitro functional studies to clinical car

BACKGROUND: Tissue harvesting at the time of surgery offers surgeons and scientists a unique opportunity to discover and better understand disease pathophysiology. Tissue biobanking presents challenges in patient consents, specimen collection, preparation, and storage, but the potential for scientific discovery justifies the effort. Although the number of tissue biobanks is increasing worldwide, information regarding necessary infrastructure, process flow, and management of expected obstacles is lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To provide a framework and motivation for clinician scientists intending to st

The biological samples of oral genetic diseases and rare diseases are extremely precious. Collecting and preserving these biological samples are helpful to elucidate the mechanisms and improve the level of diagnose and treatment of oral genetic diseases and rare diseases. The standardized construction of biobanks for oral genetic diseases and rare diseases is important for achieving these goals. At present, there is very little information on the construction of these biobanks, and the standards or suggestions for the classification and coding of biological samples from oral and maxillofacial

BACKGROUND: In low- and middle-income countries, limited infrastructure and resources hinder biobank establishment, affecting specimen diversity. Addressing this gap is crucial for equitable health outcomes, as current databases are skewed towards Northern-European populations. In Pakistan, pediatric cancer biobanks are non-existent. Indus Hospital & Health Network (IHHN) in Karachi, with its large pediatric cancer unit, aims to establish a biobank to address region-specific pediatric cancer research needs. This manuscript describes the biobank implementation process using implementation scien

Biobank involves collecting, processing, storing, and organizing biosamples, along with relevant personal and health information such as medical history, family records, genetics data, and lifestyle details, for medical research and clinical care. Oral biobanking is a recently evolved field alongside the rising of precision medicine due to recent research findings in oral oncology and other oral complaints, namely caries and periodontal disease. The common samples in oral biobanks are matured and primary teeth, dental pulp cells, oral biopsies, oral rinses, saliva, and swabs from the buccal re

Aim: This case study aimed to investigate the process of integrating resources of multiple biobanks and health-care registers, especially addressing data permit application, time schedules, co-operation of stakeholders, data exchange and data quality. Methods: We investigated the process in the context of a retrospective study: Pharmacogenomics of antithrombotic drugs (PreMed study). The study involved linking the genotype data of three Finnish biobanks (Auria Biobank, Helsinki Biobank and THL Biobank) with register data on medicine dispensations, health-care encounters and laboratory results.

Uppsala Biobank is the joint and only biobank organization of the two principals, Uppsala University and Uppsala University Hospital. Biobanks are required to have updated registries on sample collection composition and management in order to fulfill legal regulations. We report here the results from the first comprehensive and overall analysis of the 131 research sample collections organized in the biobank. The results show that the median of the number of samples in the collections was 700 and that the number of samples varied from less than 500 to over one million. Blood samples, such as wh

The aetiology of endometriosis remains poorly understood. In vitro model systems provide the opportunity to identify the mechanisms driving disease pathogenesis using human cells. Three-dimensional models, particularly organoid systems, have revolutionized how we study epithelial biology and are powerful tools for modelling endometriosis. As an emerging model system, it is important to define protocols and identify the remaining challenges surrounding endometrial organoid culture to increase reproducibility and scientific rigour in endometriosis research. The World Endometriosis Research Found
