[Personal identification with biometric and genetic methods].

The need for personal identification is growing in many avenues of society. To "identify" a person is to establish a link between his or her observed characteristics and those previously stored in a database. To "authenticate" is to decide whether or not someone is the person he or she claims to be. These two objectives can now be achieved by analysing biometric data and genetic prints. All biometric techniques proceed in several stages: acquisition of an image or physical parameters, encoding them with a mathematical model, comparing the results of this model with those contained in the datab

Sheep biometric identification based on multiple body parts.

Precision livestock farming technologies require individual animal identification to integrate specific animal data with farm processes, including health, milk recording, and feeding management. Identification methods, such as physical marks and ear tags, require manual handling and are prone to loss or wear. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags enable contactless identification, but still face limitations under farm conditions, including tag loss, maintenance costs, and proximity to the sensor. Recent advances in computer vision and deep learning have led to alternative approaches for a

Reproducible benchmark of wavelet-enhanced intrabody communication biometric identification.

Intrabody communication (IBC) channels offer physiological diversity that may support future wearable biometric identification. Recent reports of over 99 per cent identification accuracy have frequently resulted from data leakage, where samples from the same subject are seen in both training and evaluation, yielding inflated and unreliable metrics. In this work, we establish a public, leakage-free benchmark for IBC biometrics built on a 30-subject open dataset, using strict subject-wise 80/20 splits repeated five times to ensure reproducibility. We systematically compare frequency-domain and t

"Radiobiometrics": Deep-learning radiograph biometrics for patient identification.

When reporting on radiology follow-up examinations, radiologists should ensure that follow-up images and reference images are from the same patient to prevent misidentification errors. This is a nontrivial task when accounting for changes in the patient's condition and differences in image acquisition. Thus, we developed a system for automatic patient identification from radiographs using convolutional neural networks. Using deep metric learning, we trained multiple models to match radiographs of the chest, knees, pelvis, and hands. We also trained a model to match chest radiographs of multipl

Interpretable Spectral Features for Cross-Session EEG Biometric Identification and Verification.

Electroencephalogram (EEG)-based biometric sensing provides a promising pathway for secure and user-specific human authentication, but practical deployment remains limited by cross-session non-stationarity and potentially optimistic evaluation protocols caused by window- or event-level leakage. This study developed a cross-session EEG biometric sensing framework using interpretable spectral features and target-session calibration, with trial-level non-overlapping data partitioning to prevent overlap between training, calibration, and blind-test sets. Multi-channel EEG events were segmented int

High-Density Surface Electromyogram-based Biometrics for Personal Identification.

Surface electromyogram (sEMG) has been widely applied in neurorehabilitation techniques such as human-machine interface (HMI). The individual difference of sEMG characteristics has long been a challenge for multi-user HMI. However, the individually unique sEMG property indicates its high potential as a biometrics modality. In this work, we propose a novel application of high-density sEMG (HD-sEMG) for personal identification. HD-sEMG can decode the high-resolution spatial patterns of muscle activations, besides the widely studied temporal features, thus providing more sufficient information. W

Enhancing unique identification of patients with malaria using biometric fingerprinting in Papua, Indonesia.

BACKGROUND: Unique patient identification is necessary for detecting malaria recurrence and facilitates individualised treatment. Reliable patient identification in settings with poor information technology infrastructure is challenging. A before-and-after study was conducted to investigate whether the use of biometric fingerprinting alongside an existing physical 'malaria card' system improved unique identification of patients with malaria at a busy, publicly-funded clinic in Papua, Indonesia. METHODS: A three-phase study was conducted at Wania clinic in Timika over a 16-month period. In Pha

Cross-day analysis of Multicode Surface Electromyography based Biometrics for Personal Identification.

Recently, surface electromyography (sEMG) has emerged as a novel biometric trait for personal identification, potentially providing a superior spoof-resistant solution over existing traits. The sEMG possesses a unique dual-mode security: they differ between individuals (biometric-mode), and different gestures have different sEMG characteristics (knowledge-mode). To leverage the knowledge-mode facet of the dual-mode security, the previous studies have utilized a multicode framework involving the fusion of codes (gestures), however, the analysis involved data recorded on a single day and from a

Extreme Edge Computing for Secure and Private Multimodal Biometric Identification in Intelligent IoT Systems.

The exponential growth of Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystems is driving a paradigm shift from centralized cloud computing towards decentralized architectures to mitigate latency and bandwidth constraints. While edge computing addresses some of these challenges, data transmission to local gateways still raises critical security and privacy concerns. This study explores the Compute Continuum by pushing intelligence to the extreme edge using TinyML. We propose a secure, privacy-preserving multimodal biometric authentication system designed for resource-constrained embedded devices. Our solution

Short-Term Longitudinal Biometric Identification of Cattle Using Planum Nasolabiale Images and a Two-Stage Deep Learning Framework.

Individual cattle identification is essential for traceability and precision livestock management, but conventional identifiers may be lost or damaged. This study evaluated a non-invasive biometric framework based on PN images. A two-stage pipeline combined a YOLOv12n detector for muzzle localization with an ImageNet-pretrained EfficientNetB0 classifier for individual identification. Forty-eight cattle (32 adult cows and 16 calves) were photographed on 31 January 2025 (T0) and again on 11 June 2025 (T1), a 131-day interval. Four images per animal were obtained at each session, producing 384 lo

Fingerprint restoration using cubic Bezier curve.

BACKGROUND: Fingerprint biometrics play an essential role in authentication. It remains a challenge to match fingerprints with the minutiae or ridges missing. Many fingerprints failed to match their targets due to the incompleteness. RESULT: In this work, we modeled the fingerprints with Bezier curves and proposed a novel algorithm to detect and restore fragmented ridges in incomplete fingerprints. In the proposed model, the Bezier curves' control points represent the fingerprint fragments, reducing the data size by 89% compared to image representations. The representation is lossless as the

Tear Production, Intraocular Pressure, Ultrasound Biometric Features and Conjunctival Flora Identification in Clinically Normal Eyes of Two Italian Breeds of Chicken (Gallus gallus domesticus).

Given the abundance of chickens in Italy, it is important for veterinarians to know the normal state of chickens' eyes in order to identify any ophthalmic pathological changes. The aim of this study was to determine the normal values of select ocular parameters and to evaluate conjunctival microflora in two Italian chicken breeds. Sixty-six healthy chickens underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, which included a phenol red thread test (PRTT) for the evaluation of tear production and the assessment of intraocular pressure by rebound tonometry. B-mode ultrasound biometric measurements and

S-Pen Technology and Online Signatures: Cross-Device Variability and Its Implications for Mobile Biometric Authentication.

This paper presents a pilot study on cross-device variability in online signature dynamics captured on consumer Samsung devices using S-Pen technology. Signature data were acquired on two devices, a Galaxy Ultra smartphone and a Galaxy Tab S6 Lite tablet, through a unified web-based interface designed to ensure consistent capture across platforms. The acquisition process recorded timestamped x-y trajectories, stroke events, and pressure information when available, preserving temporal structure for dynamic analysis. Genuine signatures were systematically divided into reference and test sets, an

Channel Reduction for an EEG-Based Authentication System While Performing Motor Movements.

Commercial use of biometric authentication is becoming increasingly popular, which has sparked the development of EEG-based authentication. To stimulate the brain and capture characteristic brain signals, these systems generally require the user to perform specific activities such as deeply concentrating on an image, mental activity, visual counting, etc. This study investigates whether effective authentication would be feasible for users tasked with a minimal daily activity such as lifting a tiny object. With this novel protocol, the minimum number of EEG electrodes (channels) with the highes

Data-Efficient EEG-Based Person Identification via Time-Interval-Based Multi-Positive Contrastive Learning.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is an emerging biometric trait because it is difficult to steal or forge and requires acquisition from living subjects. However, many EEG-based person identification methods rely on large enrollment datasets, increasing acquisition burden and limiting practical deployment. To address this issue, we propose a data-efficient person identification framework based on time-interval-based multi-positive contrastive learning (TIB-MPCL). For each one-second EEG segment, overlapping, adjacent, and non-adjacent positive samples are constructed to exploit temporal diversity.

Unsupervised person re-identification via camera-aware multi-level label refinement.

Unsupervised person re-identification (re-ID) aims to match individuals across camera views without manual annotations, making it a challenging yet promising task. Although recent methods have made notable progress by leveraging pseudo-labels, two key challenges remain insufficiently addressed: (1) the inherent noise in pseudo-labels stemming from clustering, and (2) the limited discriminability of features resulting from camera variation. To address these issues, we propose a camera-aware multi-level label refinement (CMLR) framework, which jointly refines labels at both cluster and instance
