Optimizing the Biocompatibility of PLLA Stent Materials: Strategy with Biomimetic Coating.

BACKGROUND: Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) stents have broad application prospects in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases due to their excellent mechanical properties and biodegradability. However, foreign body reactions caused by stent implantation remain a bottleneck that limits the clinical application of PLLA stents. To solve this problem, the biocompatibility of PLLA stents must be urgently improved. Albumin, the most abundant inert protein in the blood, possesses the ability to modify the surface of biomaterials, mitigating foreign body reactions-a phenomenon described as the "stealth ef

Carbonyl-bridged energetic materials: biomimetic synthesis, organic catalytic synthesis, and energetic performances.

In order to obtain high-performance energetic materials, in this work, carbonyl groups (C[double bond, length as m-dash]O) have been newly introduced as sole bridging groups in the field of energetic materials. To this end, two tailored green methods for the synthesis of carbonyl-bridged energetic compounds have been developed for the first time. One is a biomimetic synthesis, in which the conversion route of heme to biliverdin has been used to obtain metal-containing energetic compounds. The other one is an organocatalysis, in which guanidinium serves as an energetic catalyst to afford other

Biomimetic remineralization of human dentin using promising innovative calcium-silicate hybrid "smart" materials.

INTRODUCTION: The hypothesis was that experimental ion-leaching bioactive composites enhance remineralization of apatite-depleted dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Calcium-aluminosilicate (wTC-Ba) or fluoride-containing calcium-aluminosilicate (FTC-Ba) Portland-derived mineral powders were mixed with HTP-M methacrylate HEMA/TEGDMA/PAA-based resin to prepare experimental composites. Controls were Vitrebond and Gradia Direct LoFlo. Calcium- and fluoride-release, pH of soaking water, solubility and water uptake were evaluated in deionized water using material disks (8 mm diameter and 1.6 mm thick).

3D Printing of Ultralight Biomimetic Hierarchical Graphene Materials with Exceptional Stiffness and Resilience.

Biological materials with hierarchical architectures (e.g., a macroscopic hollow structure and a microscopic cellular structure) offer unique inspiration for designing and manufacturing advanced biomimetic materials with outstanding mechanical performance and low density. Most conventional biomimetic materials only benefit from bioinspired architecture at a single length scale (e.g., microscopic material structure), which largely limits the mechanical performance of the resulting materials. There exists great potential to maxime the mechanical performance of biomimetic materials by leveraging

Biomimetic hydration lubrication with various polyelectrolyte layers on cross-linked polyethylene orthopedic bearing materials.

Natural joints rely on fluid thin-film lubrication by the hydrated polyelectrolyte layer of cartilage. However, current artificial joints with polyethylene (PE) surfaces have considerably less efficient lubrication and thus much greater wear, leading to osteolysis and aseptic loosening. This is considered a common factor limiting prosthetic longevity in total hip arthroplasty (THA). However, such wear could be mitigated by surface modification to mimic the role of cartilage. Here we report the development of nanometer-scale hydrophilic layers with varying charge (nonionic, cationic, anionic, o

The Biomimetics of Mg2+-Concentration-Resolved Microenvironment for Bone and Cartilage Repairing Materials Design.

With the increase in population aging, the tendency of osteochondral injury will be accelerated, and repairing materials are increasingly needed for the optimization of the regenerative processes in bone and cartilage recovery. The local environment of the injury sites and the deficiency of Mg2+ retards the repairing period via inhibiting the progenitor osteogenesis and chondrogenesis cells’ recruitment, proliferation, and differentiation, which results in the sluggish progress in the osteochondral repairing materials design. In this article, we elucidate the Mg2+-concentration specified effec

Engineered micro-structured biomimetic material for modelling the outer blood-retinal barrier.

The outer blood-retinal barrier (oBRB) is compromised in several retinal pathologies, such as age-related macular degeneration affecting over 200 million people worldwide. This 200-350 μm thick tissue includes the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), the Bruch's membrane, and the vascularized choroid supplying the outer retina. Degeneration of the RPE and/or choroid leads to photoreceptor loss and, ultimately, blindness. Current in vitro co-culture oBRB models developed to better understand the diseases and to propose therapeutic alternatives are often simplistic, focusing on 2D cultures, or face

Strontium and Copper Co-Doped Multifunctional Calcium Phosphates: Biomimetic and Antibacterial Materials for Bone Implants.

β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) is a promising material in regenerative traumatology for the creation of bone implants. Previously, it was established that doping the structure with certain cations can reduce the growth of bacterial activity. Recently, much attention has been paid to co-doped β-TCP, that is explained by their ability, on the one hand, to reduce cytotoxicity for cells of the human organism, on the other hand, to achieve a successful antibacterial effect. Sr, Cu-co-doped solid solutions of the composition Ca9.5-xSrxCu(PO4)7 was obtained by the method of solid-phase reactions. The

Boosting Water Evaporation by Construction of Photothermal Materials with a Biomimetic Black Soil Aggregate Structure.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is considered an efficient way to get fresh water from seawater. However, the low evaporation rate, surface salt crystallization, and low energy collection of the photothermal evaporation layer limit its further application in an outdoor freshwater field. And the aggregate structure design of the material itself is often ignored in solar-driven water evaporation. Black soil (BS), with a unique soil aggregate structure, is rich in tubular pores, which can be used for multilevel sunlight utilization and good capillary water transport. Based on the extraordina

From Soft to Hard Biomimetic Materials: Tuning Micro/Nano-Architecture of Scaffolds for Tissue Regeneration.

Failure of tissues and organs resulting from degenerative diseases or trauma has caused huge economic and health concerns around the world. Tissue engineering represents the only possibility to revert this scenario owing to its potential to regenerate or replace damaged tissues and organs. In a regeneration strategy, biomaterials play a key role promoting new tissue formation by providing adequate space for cell accommodation and appropriate biochemical and biophysical cues to support cell proliferation and differentiation. Among other physical cues, the architectural features of the biomateri

The construction of ideal tissue engineering trachea has always been a difficult problem in trachea transplantation surgery. The biological characteristics of decellularized matrix prepared by detergent-enzymatic (DEM) and 3D printing biomimetic scaffold (PTS) in vivo and in vitro were compared. In order to comprehensively evaluate its performance, we tested morphological and biomechanical characteristics of the native tracheas(Group A), DEM(Group B), and PTS(Group C). The above groups were co-cultured with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs), after which cell attachment and proliferati
