Mercury bioaccumulation and biomagnification in mesopelagic biota.

This study investigated the distribution and biomagnification pathways of total mercury (THg) concentrations in three mesopelagic species in the Tasman Sea: two fish (Diaphus hudsoni, Metelectrona ventralis) and one predatory squid (Lycoteuthis lorigera). THg concentrations in muscle tissue ranged from 0.06 to 0.26 μg g-1 dry weight (DW) and were consistently higher in liver tissue (0.15-0.96 μg g-1 DW) across all species. Species-specific variations in THg bioaccumulation and the liver-to-muscle THg ratio suggested differences in mercury metabolism. Stable isotope ratios of carbon (δ13C) vari

Contaminants in tropical island streams and their biota.

Environmental contamination is problematic for tropical islands due to their typically dense human populations and competing land and water uses. The Caribbean island of Puerto Rico (USA) has a long history of anthropogenic chemical use, and its human population density is among the highest globally, providing a model environment to study contaminant impacts on tropical island stream ecosystems. Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, historic-use chlorinated pesticides, current-use pesticides, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), and metals (mercury, cadmium, copper, lead, nickel, zinc, and selenium)

[A response of the biota to climatic warming on Europe].

Data on the impact of climatic warming on a number of phenomena in the life of plants, animals, biocenoses, and parasitic systems of transmissible diseases are presented. Emphasis is laid on the ambiguity of responses shown by species to the same exposures, which makes any forecasting of the consequences of climatic warming very difficult, frequently unrealistic and hence it is necessary to arrange an epizootological monitoring of malaria and other transmissible diseases.

The human vaginal bacterial biota and bacterial vaginosis.

The bacterial biota of the human vagina can have a profound impact on the health of women and their neonates. Changes in the vaginal microbiota have been associated with several adverse health outcomes including premature birth, pelvic inflammatory disease, and acquisition of HIV infection. Cultivation-independent molecular methods have provided new insights regarding bacterial diversity in this important niche, particularly in women with the common condition bacterial vaginosis (BV). PCR methods have shown that women with BV have complex communities of vaginal bacteria that include many fasti

The occurrence and zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium species in freshwater biota.

BACKGROUND: Protozoan pathogens from the genus Cryptosporidium cause the diarrhoeal disease cryptosporidiosis in humans and animals globally. Freshwater biota could act as potential reservoirs or zoonotic sources of Cryptosporidium infections for livestock and people, but Cryptosporidium occurrence in aquatic biota is largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of Cryptosporidium in a range of freshwater organisms in upland rivers across England and Wales. METHODS: Fish were sampled by electrofishing, invertebrate larvae by kick sampling and the otter Lutra lut

Climate warming and disease risks for terrestrial and marine biota.

Infectious diseases can cause rapid population declines or species extinctions. Many pathogens of terrestrial and marine taxa are sensitive to temperature, rainfall, and humidity, creating synergisms that could affect biodiversity. Climate warming can increase pathogen development and survival rates, disease transmission, and host susceptibility. Although most host-parasite systems are predicted to experience more frequent or severe disease impacts with warming, a subset of pathogens might decline with warming, releasing hosts from disease. Recently, changes in El Niño-Southern Oscillation eve

[Hygienic and ecological criteria of hazards in the protection of aqueous biota].

Man is not always sensitive to toxic agents than the representative of the aqueous biota. Almost in every fifth case, human sensitivity to water pollutants is higher and that to a number of compounds is more than 100 times greater. Therefore, there cannot be unified environmental and hygienic standards and fishery and sanitary MAC of water agents should be taken apart to provide a reliable safety of human water consumption.

Methylmercury in biota downstream of Arivaca lake, Arizona, USA.

Concentrations of total mercury (Hg) and methylmercury (MeHg) were determined in water, sediment, periphyton, spiders, and amphibians from the streams and desert marsh downstream from Arivaca Lake, Arizona, to better understand their distribution and bioaccumulation. Mean concentrations of MeHg in water ranged from 0.09 to 0.93 ng/L, and mean concentrations of total Hg in sediment ranged from 10.4 to 126 μg/kg. Hg and MeHg in water and sediments downstream from Arivaca Lake were low enough that they did not exceed human health or ecological thresholds. Hg and MeHg between sites ranged from 0.1

Deoxynivalenol damages the intestinal barrier and biota of the broiler chickens.

BACKGROUND: In the livestock feed industry, feed and feed raw materials are extremely susceptible to mycotoxin contamination. Deoxynivalenol (DON) is one of the main risk factors for mycotoxin contamination in broiler feed and feedstuff, however, there is still little knowledge about this. Hence, the purpose of this study was to explore the toxicity effect of DON on the intestinal barrier and the microecological balance of the biota in broiler chickens. RESULTS: In our present study, we compared the pathological scores of the small intestines of broilers on the 5th, 7th, and 10th day, and cho

Effects of sea ice on Arctic biota: an emerging crisis discipline.

The rapid decline in Arctic sea ice (ASI) extent, area and volume during recent decades is occurring before we can understand many of the mechanisms through which ASI interacts with biological processes both at sea and on land. As a consequence, our ability to predict and manage the effects of this enormous environmental change is limited, making this a crisis discipline Here, we propose a framework to study these effects, defining direct effects as those acting on life-history events of Arctic biota, and indirect effects, where ASI acts upon biological systems through chains of events, normal

Pharmaceuticals in biota in the aquatic environment: analytical methods and environmental implications.

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment is an ever-increasing issue of concern as they are specifically designed to target specific metabolic and molecular pathways in organisms, and they may have the potential for unintended effects on nontarget species. Information on the presence of pharmaceuticals in biota is still scarce, but the scientific literature on the subject has established the possibility of bioaccumulation in exposed aquatic organisms through other environmental compartments. However, few studies have correlated both bioaccumulation of pharmaceutical compounds

Tire wear particles in aquatic environments: From biota to ecosystem impacts.

Tire wear particles (TWPs), mainly generated through friction between tires and road surfaces, represent a major source of traffic-related microplastic pollution, posing threats to biota and ecosystem functions. These particles are a complex mixture of toxic compounds, including heavy metals (e.g., zinc) and organic compounds (e.g., 6-PPD), and their diverse leachates exacerbate their ecological impacts. This review collates current knowledge on the occurrence of TWPs and their leachates in aquatic systems, emphasizing their toxicological effects on species and cascading ecological consequence

Methylmercury determination in biota by solid-phase microextraction matrix effect evaluation.

Aqueous-phase alkylation followed by, headspace solid-phase microextraction (SPME) for mercury speciation in biota, was developed a decade ago. Despite this, matrix effects in this technique have not yet been addressed. In this paper, the importance of these effects has been assessed and overcome by standard addition calibration. Furthermore, improvements were made in the extraction of methylmercury (MeHg) from biological matrixes by optimizing the matrix digestion procedure (temperature and digestion time) and the SPME parameters (aliquot volume of digested samples, extraction temperature and

Mercury contamination of biota from Acadia National Park, Maine: a review.

We reviewed literature reporting both total and methylmercury from biota from Acadia National Park, Maine, USA. Our review of existing data indicates that 1) mercury contamination is widespread throughout the Park's various aquatic ecosystems; 2) mercury pollution likely represents a moderate to high risk to biota inhabiting the Park; and 3) biota at all trophic levels possess elevated concentrations of both total and methylmercury. Watershed fire history and the resulting post-fire forest succession patterns are an important landscape attribute governing mercury cycling at Acadia National Par

Occurrence and prioritization of hydrophobic pollutants in China's coastal marine biota.

Pollutants in the marine environment directly affect biota and can be transmitted to humans through the food chain. However, comprehensive biomonitoring data for coastal marine biota remain limited. In this study, a suspect screening analysis (SSA) workflow using gas chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-QTOF/MS) was conducted to investigate 830 hydrophobic pollutants in 130 marine biota samples collected from four major coastal seas in China (the Bohai, Yellow, East China, and South China Seas). A total of 165 hydrophobic pollutants were identified, with 40 high-frequ

Mercury accumulation and biotransportation in wetland biota affected by gold mining.

Phytoremediation is a cost-effective, eco-friendly technology for the removal of metals from polluted areas. In this study, six different plant species (Datura stramonium, Phragmites australis, Persicaria lapathifolia, Melilotus alba, Panicum coloratum, and Cyperus eragrostis) growing in a gold mine contaminated wetland were investigated as potential phytoremediators of mercury. The accumulation of total mercury and methylmercury in plant tissues was determined during the wet and dry seasons to establish the plants' variability in accumulation. The highest accumulation of total mercury was in

Spatial patterns of mercury in biota of Adirondack, New York lakes.

We studied the spatial distribution patterns of mercury (Hg) in lake water, littoral sediments, zooplankton, crayfish, fish, and common loons in 44 lakes of the Adirondacks of New York State, USA, a region that has been characterized as a "biological Hg hotspot". Our study confirmed this pattern, finding that a substantial fraction of the lakes studied had fish and loon samples exceeding established criteria for human and wildlife health. Factors accounting for the spatial variability of Hg in lake water and biota were lake chemistry (pH, acid neutralizing capacity (ANC), percent carbon in sed
