A case of mycotic keratitis caused by Bipolaris spicifera is reported. The corneal ulcer developed after 1 week of treatment with corticosteroids and antibiotics. Septate, branched, dematiaceous hyphal elements were detected in the corneal scrapings on two occasions and repeated cultures were positive for this fungus. The infection was resolved with natamycin and itraconazole although the corneal opacity remained and the patient is now waiting for a keratoplasty.

Skin prick tests done previously revealed a significantly higher percentage of sensitization to an extract of Bipolaris sp. among atopic individuals (34/147, 23.1%) compared to non-atopic individuals. Bipolaris-specific IgE levels were quantified in sera from a representative group of 38 individuals using the Fluorescence Allergosorbent Test (FAST). Result obtained by FAST were found to be comparable to the skin prick test results (r2 = 0.60, p < 0.001 for IgE levels vs wheal sizes; r2 = 0.44, p < 0.001 for IgE levels vs erythema sizes). Characterisation of the extract's allergenic component b

Following trauma with rice stalk to the left eye, corneal ulcer with abscess and hypopyon developed in an immunocompetent male. Direct examination of the corneal scrapings revealed septate, branched fungal hyphae. Bipolaris hawaiiensis was isolated after culture on blood agar and Sabouraud dextrose agar. Because of delay in diagnosis and appropriate treatment, the patient developed endophthalmitis needing evisceration.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of keratitis infected by Bipolaris hawaiiensis.
METHODS: A patient who was diagnosed as fungal keratitis caused by B. hawaiiensis was retrospectively reviewed for history, clinical characteristics, risk factors, laboratory findings, treatments, and outcomes.
RESULTS: A 63-year-old man with a history of trauma and saw dust in the left eye presented with a corneal ulcer. Eye examination revealed whitish infiltration with a feathery edge and small brownish deposits in the anterior stroma of the left cornea. Numerous septate hyphal fragments were detected in a corn

Following an injury to the right eye, a corneal ulcer with hypopyon developed in a leprosy patient. Direct examination of the corneal scrapings on three occasions showed septate, branched, dematiaceous hyphal elements. When scrapings were cultured on Sabouraud's glucose and brain heart infusion agars. Bipolaris hawaiiensis was isolated repeatedly. The patient responded successfully to treatment with nystatin ointment, although the central opacity of the cornea remained and visual acuity did not improve.

Bipolaris spicifera, one of the darkly pigmented (dematiaceous) fungi commonly found in soil, is an uncommon cause of infection in humans and an unusual cause of meningitis and nosocomial infections. An 18-y-old boy who experienced meningitis with this micro-organism after acoustic neuroma resection was successfully treated with amphotericin B.

This case represents the first reported case of Bipolaris hawaiiensis infection in an equid, and its aggressive clinical course. This case provides important descriptive and prognostic information for horses diagnosed with phaeohyphomycotic rhinitis. A 19-year-old American Quarter Horse mare was presented for second opinion of stertor and exercise intolerance of four-month duration. Endoscopy revealed generalized, proximal nasal edema, and computed tomography identified a soft tissue mass eroded through the rostral nasal bone. Biopsy of the mass was identified as a fungal granuloma caused by B

Bipolaris is an increasingly recognized cause of fungal sinusitis. Reports of imaging features are sparse. Our purpose was to review the imaging features in patients with Bipolaris fungal sinusitis. A review of our data showed seven patients with culture-proven Bipolaris fungal sinusitis. Computed tomography of the paranasal sinuses in all the patients and MRI in five patients were analysed for the location, nature, extent of the disease and density/signal characteristics on CT/MRI. The sphenoid and posterior ethmoid sinuses were most often involved (six of seven), followed by the anterior eth

Depending on the aggressiveness of the pathogen and a patient's immunocompetence, fungal polypoid pansinusitis or allergic fungal sinusitis (AFS) may be a life-threatening disease. Apart from the clinical findings, its diagnosis is based on the demonstration of mucinous material with abundant eosinophils in the paranasal sinuses (indicating an allergic process), cultivation of the causative pathogen and immunocompetence of the patient. In a 20-year-old immigrant Sudanese woman, AFS due to Bipolaris (Drechslera) hawaiiensis was diagnosed. Because of intracranial extension, the disease had led t

We present the case of a patient with a history of asthma who developed cough and hemoptysis that were unresponsive to antituberculous therapy. Chest roentgenography demonstrated right-sided collapse with consolidation and a pleural effusion. Bronchial biopsy revealed fungal hyphae, and cultures later yielded Bipolaris spicifera. In addition, weight loss and intractable hypotension in association with hyponatremia and elevated potassium levels suggested addisonian crisis, which was confirmed by measurement of serum ACTH and cortisol levels. Computed tomography of the abdomen revealed bilateral

Autophagy is involved in cellular development and the maintenance of viability under nutrient deprivation in a wide range of eukaryotes. A filamentous ascomycete Bipolaris maydis, responsible for southern corn leaf blight, is also studied as a model fungus for sexual reproduction in filamentous ascomycetes that form filiform ascospores. In order to clarify the roles of autophagy in various stages of the life cycle of B. maydis, we constructed null mutants of BmATG8, an orthologue of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae autophagy gene ATG8 in B. maydis. Deletion of BmATG8 impaired localization of cytos

Mycotic meningoencephalitis in dogs may manifest as a primary disease of the central nervous system or as a part of disseminated infection. Fungi belonging to the genus Bipolaris are saprophytic plant pathogens and can cause disease in humans. The authors report a case of Bipolaris infection in a dog with granulomatous meningoencephalitis, nephritis, and vasculitis. The clinical and histological features resembled those of the more common aspergillosis, thus warranting confirmation by molecular methods. Polymerase chain reaction and sequence analysis identified Bipolaris from the brain lesion,

Allergic fungal sinusitis is a disease that results from hypersensitivity reaction of the host against fungi colonizing the paranasal sinuses. A 36 years old Spanish man with no history of travel abroad had a history of asthma, nasal polyps, allergic rhinitis and a chronic sinusitis with nasal congestion and headaches. Computed tomography showed pansinusitis and opacification of the paranasal sinuses. A pure culture of Bipolaris australiensis was grown from sinus tissues. Infections caused by Bipolaris spp. and treatment regimes are discussed.

We report an interesting case of infectious scleritis from coinfection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bipolaris with no corneal infiltrate. A healthy 60-year-old man with a history of infectious scleritis following pterygium excision presented with purulent material growing P. aeruginosa and 1+ colonies of Bipolaris species of fungus. Broad spectrum treatment was initiated with hourly topical moxifloxacin, fortified tobramycin, and natamycin along with a subconjunctival injection of voriconazole and topical cyclosporine, with PO ketoconazole. After 10 weeks of aggressive empiric treatment, the

IMPORTANCE: This is a notice to ophthalmologists performing intravitreal injections of triamcinolone or other medications of the risk for endophthalmitis caused by Bipolaris hawaiiensis-contaminated medications.
OBSERVATIONS: Histopathologic review of 5 eyes from a series of 17 treated with intravitreal triamcinolone for retinal vascular disease and diabetes mellitus over 1 year from 1 lot prepared by a compounding pharmacy. Endophthalmitis occurred in 14 of 17 eyes, the first presenting a mild vitritis 5 days following injection. The onset of signs and symptoms of endophthalmitis (eg, decrea

Bipolaris spicifera is a darkly pigmented (dematiaceous) fungus that uncommonly causes infections in humans. There are few cases of reported cutaneous Bipolaris infection in the literature. We report a case of a five-year-old boy with B-precursor-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia who developed a cutaneous fungal infection on his left cheek Histopathological and microbiological findings identified the fungus as Bipolaris spicifera. Surgical excision and systemic antifungal therapy are the mainstay of treatment.

Invasive dermal infections in immunosuppressed patients by a wide variety of opportunistic fungi are well described in the literature; however, superficial infections (dermatomycosis) are more rarely described. We report 4 cases of dermatomycosis by Alternaria or Bipolaris species. All but one of the patients had predisposing conditions including topical corticosteroid use, atopic or seborrheic dermatitis, and nail dystrophy. All 4 patients were otherwise immunocompetent. These cases represent some of the very few reports of Bipolaris in a primary stratum corneum infection and the first report
