Birdshot chorioretinopathy, also known as "Birdshot uveitis" is a binocular, chronic disease, as a result of inflammation in the posterior segment of the eye. The hallmarks of the disease are multiple white-creamy choroidal ovoid lesions. The symptoms of the disease range from good visual acuity with only mild symptoms, to a significant and permanent decrease in vision. This review aims to provide information about the course, clinical presentation, diagnosis and treatment for Birdshot chorioretinopathy. The initial diagnosis is made through fundus examination, in addition to support of positi

"Birdshot" retinochoroidopathy is an intraocular inflammation described by Ryan and Maumenee in 1980. It is characterized by vitreous changes, retinal vascular leakage, and multiple depigmented spots of the retinal pigment epithelium and choriocapillaris. Clinical, ophthalmoscopic, and angiographic findings of the disease in two cases are reported. in the first case, the immune response to retinal S-antigen and the presence of HLA A and B antigens were studied. In the second case, particular angiographic appearances were noted. Characteristics differentiating this disease from other intraocula

PURPOSE: The purpose of the study was to determine if progressive choroidal changes occur in birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR).
METHODS: Retrospective chart review of all patients with BSCR who were seen over a 3-year period. Controls consisted of healthy age-matched and gender-matched patients. Choroidal thickness at baseline and final follow-up visit was measured with the use of optical coherence tomography. Results were analyzed using univariate and multivariable statistical models.
RESULTS: A total of 11 patients (22 eyes) with BSCR were identified. The majority of BSCR eyes (86%) had cl

PURPOSE: To search findings that can explain the heterogeneity between Resistant and Responsive patients with birdshot chorioretinopathy.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective observational case series on "Responsive" versus "Resistant" birdshot chorioretinopathy.
RESULTS: One-hundred-eighty and Ninety-nine patients were included in the Responsive and Resistant groups respectively. Multivariate analysis of paraclinical variables at the first visit demonstrated that mean deviation (p = .04), pattern standard deviation (p < .001), optic nerve head leakage (p = .012), large vessel leak

We report the case of a 48-year-old Caucasian male who presented with progressive bilateral visual decline over more than three months. He was diagnosed with birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) according to the Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature (SUN) criteria, based on characteristic fundus findings and HLA-A29 positivity. Laboratory investigations, including angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and soluble IL-2 receptor levels, were within normal limits and infectious serologies were negative. Thoracic imaging by computed tomography showed no signs suggestive of sarcoidosis or infection, a

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Patients with birdshot chorioretinopathy (BCR) may develop visual compromise due to choroidal neovascularization (CNV), and few series address management strategies in the anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) era. The purpose of this study was to describe the clinical outcomes of combination anti-VEGF and immunosuppressive therapy for CNV associated with BCR.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Retrospective, interventional case series. Patients with BCR from two tertiary uveitis and retina practices were reviewed. Patients with CNV in association with BCR were identifie

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of systemic lymphoma causing a birdshot-like chorioretinopathy in a histocompatibility leukocyte antigen-A29-negative patient.
METHODS: A 58-year-old man presented with a 1-year history of blurry vision and intermittent floaters. He had evidence of bilateral choroidal birdshot-like lesions that appeared atrophic without any vitritis. He had a history of low-grade B-cell lymphoma and chronic myeloid leukemia, both of which were diagnosed >10 years before presentation and treated with chemotherapy.
RESULTS: The differential diagnosis of these birdshot-like lesion

During the period 1980-6 102 patients from 14 European eye clinics were diagnosed as having birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR). All were Caucasian, and the series consisted of 47 men and 55 women, with a mean age of 52.5 years. The major findings in this rare disorder concern the ocular fundus. Most marked are the patterned distribution of depigmented spots without hyperpigmentation, radiation from the optic disc in association with vitritis, retinal vasculopathy with frequent cystoid macular oedema, and involvement of the optic nerve head. The distribution and appearance of the lesions suggest

Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a bilateral, chronic posterior uveitis with characteristic clinical and imaging findings. Multimodal imaging including optical coherence tomography, fluorescein, and indocyanine green angiography is useful in diagnosis, as well as monitoring disease activity. Cystoid macular edema, choroidal thickening and infiltration, ellipsoid loss, and vasculitis are important imaging markers for disease activity. The purpose of this case series is to discuss the spectrum of disease presentations and highlight both common and atypical imaging characteristics of BSCR tha

PURPOSE: To assess contrast sensitivity in patients with birdshot chorioretinopathy; to identify relationships between contrast sensitivity, other measures of visual function, clinical findings, and quality of life.
DESIGN: Single-center, cross-sectional study.
METHODS: We measured contrast sensitivity in 63 patients (126 eyes) at four spatial frequencies (3, 6, 12, 18 cycles/degree [cpd]) using the CSV-1000E instrument (VectorVision, Greenville, Ohio, USA). Abnormal contrast sensitivity was defined as two standard deviations below the mean for population norms. Results at spatial frequency

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Retinal vascular disorders are associated with lower fractal dimension (FD). We analyzed FD in birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study. We performed optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) and analyzed FD of the superficial capillary plexus (SCP), deep capillary plexus (DCP), and choriocapillaris (CC) using ImageJ. For each vascular layer, we analyzed the presence of BSCR, subjects' age, sex, and presence of diabetes mellitus to determine which may predict lower FD.
RESULTS: We compared 28 eyes (14 patie

PURPOSE: Peripapillary halos (PPH) are peripapillary changes observed surrounding the optic nerve head in normal eyes and eyes with different disorders. Recognizing the microstructure and mechanism of development of these halos will help clinicians understand the different associated retinal and optic nerve head pathologies. We describe the in vivo histological characteristics of PPH in birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a prospective observational case-series in a single tertiary referral center. Six eyes of three patients with PPH associated with BSCR were det

Purpose: To assess the choroidal vascularity index (CVI) in birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) patients. Methods: The CVI was calculated as the ratio of luminar area to the total subfoveal choroidal area on enhanced-depth imaging optical coherence tomography. Intraocular inflammation was defined by the presence of macular edema and/or vitritis and/or vasculitis and/or papillitis. Results: Eighty BSCR patients and 22 healthy controls were included. Foveal choroidal thickness was lower in the BSCR compared with the control group (p < 0.001). CVI was not different between the two groups. CVI was sig

PURPOSE: To report the first HLA-A29‑positive Birdshot Chorioretinopathy (BSCR) patients from Egypt.
METHODS: Two patients, from 2 separate cities along the Egyptian Nile Valley, were found to have chorioretinopathy with characteristic "birdshot" pale ill-defined choroidal lesions arranged in a radial fashion emerging from the optic disc, with a relatively quiet anterior segment. On OCT, both patients showed varying degrees of photoreceptor disruption and choroidal structural changes related to long-standing inflammation.
RESULTS: HLA-A29 testing was positive in both patients. Both patients

Birdshot chorioretinopathy (BSCR) is a relatively rare form of uveitis, which is strongly correlated with the histocompatibility leukocyte antigen (HLA)-A29 class I type. Nevertheless, HLA typing is not diagnostic. The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively evaluate the ocular manifestations associated with the presence of HLA-A29 other than typical BSCR. Charts of consecutive patients with a diagnosis of intraocular inflammation and who were found to be positive for the presence of HLA-A29 were retrospectively reviewed. Only 7 patients met the criteria for a definite diagnosis of
