Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) syndrome is a rare condition that typically presents with a triad of benign cutaneous papules including fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts and pneumothoraxes, and renal tumors. Though a rare disease, it is an important diagnosis so that monitoring for a renal neoplasm can begin. In this case report we discuss an asymptomatic patient diagnosed with BHD after undergoing a routine skin exam and highlight the importance of diagnosis so that routine screening can be implemented.

Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant condition identified by the triad of cutaneous fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, and renal cell carcinoma. The vast majority of patients with BHD syndrome initially present with spontaneous pneumothorax. This unique case describes a patient with BHD syndrome who presented with sebaceous cysts and perifollicular fibromas. The evaluation by dermatology is what led to his diagnosis. Expanding the clinical presentation of BHD syndrome to encompass a variety of skin findings could help with recognizing these patients before they suffer th

Birt Hogg Dube syndrome is a rare disease characterized by autosomal dominant inherited multiple cysts in the lungs, renal tumors and skin fibrofolliculomas. It was first described in 1977 by Birt et al. In this case report, a patient who was diagnosed with symptoms and his first degree relative is presented. Diseases that should be considered in differential diagnosis are discussed. The diagnosis of this disease is usually made after recurrent pneumothorax. Since it is a genetic disease, the importance of follow-up and screening needs of patients and their relatives is emphasized.

The Birt-Hogg-Dubé (BHD) syndrome is associated with cutaneous disorders including fibrofolliculomas and trichodiscomas, and also lung pneumatocysts and kidney tumours. The BHD syndrome occurs as a consequence of an autosomal dominantly inherited genodermatosis, linked to multiple germline mutations in the 14 exons of the BHD gene, mapped on 17p11.2 and encoding for folliculin (FLCN). The size and number of lung pneumatocysts are extremely variable and the cysts are surrounded by normal pulmonary tissue. In the absence of smoking lung function is usually unimpaired. The lung cysts are frequent

Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by multiple lung cysts, typical skin manifestations, and renal tumors. We prospectively enrolled thirty-one subjects from four South Korean institutions with typical lung cysts, and next-generation sequencing was conducted. We prospectively enrolled thirty-one subjects from four Korean institutions with typical lung cysts. Next-generation sequencing was performed to investigate mutations in the following genes: FLCN, TSC1, TSC2, CFTR, EFEMP2, ELN, FBLN5, LTBP4, and SERPINA1. BHD was diagnosed in 11 of the 31 enrolled subjects (35.5%

A 32-year-old man was referred to our surgical unit with a left adrenal lesion. He was previously diagnosed with Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome after presenting with a left pneumothorax and an incidental finding of a right apical lung mass. This syndrome is characterised commonly by benign skin hamartomas, recurrent pneumothoraces and an increased risk of renal tumours. He was unable to tolerate a biopsy of his lung lesion, however, this lung lesion was thought to be benign. Given the size of his adrenal lesion and radiological appearances, we performed a laparoscopic left adrenalectomy. Pathology co

The Birt Hogg Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis predisposing patients to developing fibrofolliculoma, trichodiscoma and acrochordon. The syndrome is caused by germline mutations in the folliculin (FLCN) gene, encoding the folliculin tumor-suppressor protein. Numerous mutations have been described in the FLCN gene, the most frequent occurring within a C8 tract of exon 11. This hypermutability is probably due to a slippage in DNA polymerase during replication, resulting in gains/losses of repeat units, causing cancer predisposition. The main phenotypic manifestation

Birt-Hogg Dubé syndrome is an autosomal dominant disease with variable clinical expression. It is characterized by cutaneous manifestations, renal tumors and lung cysts. Other tumors, such as adrenal tumors and tumors originating from the neural crest cells such as meningioma and neurothekeoma have also been described. This syndrome is caused by germline mutations in the folliculin (FLCN) gene located on chromosome 17p. We report, for the first time, a patient with BHDS and a history of a vestibular schwannoma in adolescence. The diagnosis of BHDS was confirmed, by identifying a nonsense mutat

Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) syndrome is an unusual disorder characterized by the triad of cutaneous lesions, renal tumors and lung cysts. In cases with BHD syndrome, the frequency of recurrent pneumothorax is increased due to presence of multiple lung cysts. It is important to evaluate the BHD syndrome in differential diagnosis of recurrent pneumothorax especially with multiple lung cysts predominating in the lung base. In these patients, the presence of accompanying kidney and other tumors should be investigated. Herein, we report a case of BHD syndrome presenting with recurrent pneumothorax.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) is a rare genetic disorder that results from a mutation in the folliculin (FLCN) gene. Manifestations include pulmonary cysts, fibrofolliculomas, renal tumors, and pneumothoraces. Genetic testing can be used to confirm the diagnosis when suspected. BHD syndrome is diagnosed in patients with negative FLCN gene results using diagnostic criteria.
CASE PRESENTATION: A male in his 20s presented with recurrent pneumothoraces. A physical examination revealed bumps on his face and upper body. A chest computed tomography scan revealed cystic lesions. B

Mutations in FLCN cause Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome, an autosomal dominant disorder notable for development of cutaneous fibrofolliculomas or trichodiscomas, a variety of renal tumors, and spontaneous pneumothorax due to cystic lung changes. We present a woman referred for genetic evaluation due to bilateral parotid gland tumors, who was subsequently diagnosed with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome.

We report a rare case of Sjogren's syndrome complicated with Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) not previously mentioned in the literature. Further, there is insufficient evidence linking the two diseases. Here, we review existing diagnostic algorithms for diagnosing diffuse cystic lung disease and provide new insights. The patient initially complained of thirst and dry eyes for ten years, and gradually developed shortness of breath. After admission, physical examination showed five missing teeth, decreased respiratory sounds in both lower lungs, and Velcro rales. Computed tomography showed multip

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline mutations in the FLCN gene, characterized by cutaneous fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, and an increased risk of renal neoplasms. Parotid oncocytoma is an infrequently reported extracutaneous manifestation of the syndrome. A 30-year-old man with a prior history of testicular embryonal cell carcinoma presented with a right-sided neck mass. Workup of the parotid lesion ultimately led to a new diagnosis of BHD, confirmed by FLCN germline mutation testing. The patient underwent right parotidectomy, which was

Renal oncocytomas are commonly reported in association with Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHS) syndrome, while BHD-associated oncocytomas of the parotid gland are rare. To date, there have been only 11 cases of BHD-associated parotid gland oncocytoma, without a reported case of malignant transformation. We present the first reported case of oncocytic carcinoma of the parotid gland associated with BHD, with radiologic and histologic correlation. This case establishes that BHD-associated parotid oncocytic lesions, previously identified only as benign oncocytomas in the literature to date, can undergo malignan

Birt-Hogg-Dube syndrome (BHD) is a rare autosomal dominant disease classically associated with fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts, spontaneous pneumothorax, and renal cancers. Information about its manifestation aside from the ones listed prior is limited. There have been several reports of BHD associated with parotid oncocytomas and rare benign epithelial tumors. Here, we report the first known case of BHD in association with parotid acinic cell carcinoma, a rare low-grade malignant tumor of salivary glands.

A Chinese woman presented with a spontaneous pneumothorax and a family history suggestive of the autosomal dominant transmission of pneumothorax. The patient also had skin fibrofolliculomas and folliculin gene deletion, compatible with Birt-Hogg-Dube (BHD) syndrome. The importance of BHD syndrome and other familial spontaneous pneumothoraces is discussed.
