Over the last decades, the adverse effects of human exposure to the so-called "endocrine disruptors" have been a matter of scientific debate and public attention. Bisphenols are synthetic chemicals, widely used in the manufacture of hard plastic products. Bisphenol A (BPA) is one of the best-known environmental toxicants proven to alter the reproductive function in men and to cause other health problems. Consumer concern resulted in "BPA free" products and in the development of bisphenol analogs (BPA-A) to replace BPA in many applications. However, these other bisphenol derivatives seem to hav

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant, mainly from the production and use of plastics and the degradation of wastes related to industrial plastics. Evidence from laboratory animal and human studies supports the view that BPA has an endocrine disrupting effect on Leydig cell development and function. To better understand the adverse effects of BPA, we reviewed its role and mechanism by analyzing rodent data in vivo and in vitro and human epidemiological evidence. BPA has estrogen and anti-androgen effects, thereby destroying the development and function of Leydig cells and c

Bisphenols are synthetic chemicals widely used in the production of plastics, resins, and food-contact materials, resulting in ubiquitous environmental exposure in humans and animals. Among their biological effects, increasing evidence highlights their ability to disrupt ovarian function. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the impact of bisphenols and their analogues on ovarian follicle physiology in domestic species, drawing primarily from bovine, ovine, and porcine studies, with comparisons to human and rodent data. After outlining bisphenol structures, exposure routes, and metabol

With the limitation of the use of bisphenol A (BPA), the production of its substitutes, bisphenol S (BPS), and bisphenol F (4,4'-BPF) is increasing. Understanding the fate and transport of BPA and its substitutes in porous media can help reduce their risk of contaminating soil and groundwater systems. In this study, column and batch adsorption experiments were performed with 14C-labeled bisphenol analogs and combined with mathematical models to investigate the interaction of BPA, BPS, 4,4'-BPF, 2,2'-BPF, and 2,4'-BPF with four standard soils with different soil organic matter (SOM) contents. Research has shown that exposure to bisphenol A (BPA), a widely used plasticizer, can lead to meiotic errors, resulting in poor reproductive cell quality and infertility. Health-related concerns have prompted the search for BPA alternatives; however, evidence suggests that currently used BPA analogs, such as bisphenol S (BPS), may pose similar risks to human health. While the effects of BPA on female fertility are well documented, the impact of BPA exposure on sperm quality is poorly understood. To better understand the effects of bisphenol analogs on spermatogenesis, we synthesized a less inv

Infertility affects 8-12% of couples worldwide, and 30-75% of preclinical pregnancy losses are due to a failure during the implantation process. Exposure to endocrine disruptors, like bisphenols, among others, has been associated with the increase in infertility observed in the past decades. An increase in infertility has correlated with exposure to endocrine disruptors like bisphenols. The uterus harbors its own microbiota, and changes in this microbiota have been linked to several gynecological conditions, including reproductive failure. There are no studies on the effects of bisphenols on t

Accumulating evidence identifies bisphenol A (BPA) as an endocrine disruptor with demonstrated hepatotoxicity, driving the adoption of structural analogs like bisphenol B (BPB). Pregnancy constitutes a critical developmental window for endocrine disruptor-mediated hepatotoxicity in offspring. However, systematic toxicity evidence about BPB exposure-induced transgenerational hepatotoxicity in offspring remains scarce, and the regulatory mechanisms need to be further explored. To elucidate the gene markers and signaling pathways involved in the developmental origins of liver dysfunction induced

INTRODUCTION: Bisphenols, as endocrine disruptors, may cause a wide range of health problems in humans, but so far, not all of them have been confirmed in animals, including pigs. Since animals are also exposed to bisphenols, we hypothesised that these substances may have an effect on uterine contractility in pigs. Therefore, the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of the most-used bisphenol, bisphenol A (BPA), and a selected analogue, bisphenol F (BPF), on the contractile activity of the pig uterus.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: The investigation utilised smooth muscles from immature pigs

BACKGROUND: Bisphenol F (BPF) and bisphenol S (BPS) are increasingly used as substitutes for bisphenol A (BPA), an environmental obesogen. However, health effects of BPF and BPS remain unclear. In this study, we evaluated the associations of BPA, BPF, and BPS with obesity in children and adolescents.
METHODS: We used data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013 to 2014, a nationally representative study. We included 745 participants aged 6 to 17 years old. General obesity was defined based on the 2000 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention body mass index-for-a

The extensive use of bisphenols in the plastics industry globally is a major growing concern for human health. Bisphenol compounds are easily leached out from plastic containers to food, beverages, and drinking water and contaminate the natural environment. Daily exposure of bisphenol compounds increases their load and impairs various organs, including the reproductive system. Bisphenol compounds directly or indirectly affect ovarian functions, such as folliculogenesis, steroidogenesis, oogenesis, and thereby oocyte quality. Bisphenol A (BPA) and its structural analogues act as endocrine disru

Owing to the strict restrictions on the production and use of bisphenol A (BPA), bisphenol analogs (e. g., bisphenol S and bisphenol F) are gradually coming to use in many fields. BPA and these bisphenol analogs are so-called bisphenols (BPs). BPs as a class of endocrine disrupters are widely distributed in the environment (water, sediments, sludge, and aquatic products). BPs enter the human body through various routes, leading to endocrine disruption, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, reproductive toxicity, dioxin-like effects, and neurotoxicity. The Canadian government has identified BPs as substa

The enantioselective construction of phosphorus(v)-stereogenic centres is of broad importance due to the utility of these compounds both as ligands in catalysis and as scaffolds in medicinal chemistry. This manuscript demonstrates the effective acylative desymmetrisation of ortho-bisphenols to access P(v)-stereogenic products using low 1 mol% loadings of the chiral isothiourea HyperBTM as a Lewis base catalyst and readily available anhydride feedstock starting materials. The scope and limitations of this method have been investigated (24 examples, up to 95% yield, 98 : 2 er). Control experimen

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most common types of cancer and is caused by the complex interplay of genetic and environmental factors, such as an unhealthy lifestyle, family history of illness, reproductive factors, and ageing. However, increasing evidence has revealed that manufactured organic pollutants such as bisphenols are closely related to BC. Bisphenols exposure can promote the progression of BC through multiple complicated and variable molecular mechanisms. Reanalysis of existing data on this topic may reveal molecular markers with clinical value. In this study, we identified four

Bisphenols (BPs), and especially bisphenol A (BPA), are known endocrine disruptors (EDCs), capable of interfering with estrogen and androgen activities, as well as being suspected of other health outcomes. Given the crucial role of thyroid hormones and the increasing incidence of thyroid carcinoma in the last few decades, this review analyzes the effects of BPS on the thyroid, considering original research in vitro, in vivo, and in humans published from January 2000 to October 2019. Both in vitro and in vivo studies reported the ability of BPs to disrupt thyroid function through multiple mecha

Epidemiological and animal studies indicate that increased exposure to bisphenol A (BPA) induces various human cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including myocardial infarction, arrhythmias, dilated cardiomyopathy, atherosclerosis, and hypertension. Bisphenol S (BPS), an alternative to BPA, is increasingly present in various consumer products and human bodies worldwide. Recently, emerging evidence has shown that BPS might be related to cardiovascular disorders. In this review, we present striking evidence of the correlation between BPA exposure and various CVDs, and show that a nonmonotonic dose

Restrictions on bisphenol A (BPA), continued exposure to phthalates, and the emergence of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) have altered the plastic-associated exposure landscape relevant to human reproduction. Existing reviews commonly address these exposures separately or summarize broad reproductive outcomes. This review instead develops a comparative mechanistic framework centered on two connected mechanisms: disruption of gonadotropin-responsive steroidogenesis and oxidative stress, inflammation, and barrier dysfunction. Human biomonitoring, reproductive-tissue, fertility-clinic, and epidemi

This study examines the presence of bisphenol A (BPA), S (BPS), F (BPF), and M (BPM) in various recycled plastics readily available on the market (LDPE, HDPE, PET, and PP), in light of European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) limits. Twenty samples of different origin are analyzed, cleaning treatments are applied, and the migration potential of these bisphenols into food is studied. BPM is absent in all samples, but a post-consumer recycled LDPE sample reveals high bisphenol concentrations, raising concerns, reaching 8540 ng/g, 370 ng/g, and 29 ng/g of BPA, BPS, and BPF, respectively. Migration t

Bisphenols are widely used in the synthesis of polycarbonate plastics, epoxy resins, and thermal paper, which are used in manufacturing items of daily use. Packaged foods and drinks are the main sources of exposure to bisphenols. These chemicals affect humans and animals by disrupting the estrogen, androgen, progesterone, thyroid, and aryl hydrocarbon receptor functions. Bisphenols exert numerous harmful effects because of their interaction with receptors, reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and cell signal alterations. Both cohort and case-c

Bisphenol A is a widely used compound found in large amount of consumer products. As concerns have been raised about its toxicological and public health effect, the use of alternatives to bisphenol A are now increasing. Bisphenol S is one of the analogues being used as a replacement for bisphenol A despite the fact that little is known about the effects of bisphenol S on living organisms. In this study, we investigated the potential endocrine and genotoxic effects of bisphenol A and bisphenol S in juvenile brown trout (Salmo trutta). The fish were exposed to the compounds for either 2 weeks or

Bisphenol A, a well-known endocrine-disrupting chemical, has been replaced with its analogs bisphenol S (BPS) and bisphenol F (BPF) over the last decade due to health concerns. BPS and BPF are present in relatively high concentrations in different products, such as food products, personal care products, and sales receipts. Both BPS and BPF have similar structural and chemical properties to BPA; therefore, considerable scientific efforts have investigated the safety of their exposure. In this review, we summarize the findings of relevant epidemiological studies investigating the association bet
