Neurotransmitters in the nervous system of Macoma balthica (Bivalvia).

The distribution of histamine-, octopamine-, gamma-aminobutyric acid- (GABA) and taurine-like immunoreactivity in the bivalve mollusc Macoma balthica was studied immunocytochemically with antisera produced in rabbits. Histamine levels in the ganglia and whole animals were also measured by high-performance liquid chromatography using a postcolumn derivatization method. Immunoreactivity for these substances, except for taurine, is found in the central nervous system of this species. The most extensive neuronal system is revealed with the antiserum against histamine. All the main ganglia contain

Sensitivity of juvenile Macomona liliana (bivalvia) to UV-photoactivated fluoranthene toxicity.

This study assessed the sensitivity of Macomona liliana (bivalvia, tellinacea) to UV-photoactivated fluoranthene toxicity. Juvenile clams (0.5-2.0 mm) were exposed to a range of aqueous fluoranthene concentrations (5-500 microg/L) for 96 h, after which the clams' ability to rebury in control sediment was determined. Survivors of these fluoranthene-only toxicity tests were then exposed in clean seawater to UV radiation from a solar radiation-simulating light source for 1 h. The differences between EC(50) values before and after UV exposure provided a measure of phototoxicity of the bioaccumulat

Synthesis of molecular data on Mactroidea (Bivalvia): phylogenetic implications and open questions.

Molecular phylogenetics have clarified high-level evolutionary relationships across the tree of life, but sampling is highly uneven at lower levels, particularly for marine organisms. Here, we synthesize all publicly available Sanger sequencing data for the diverse yet under-sampled marine bivalve superfamily Mactroidea to provide a unified molecular and paleontological framework, and to guide targeted sampling for a more complete understanding of the group's evolutionary history. We infer two complementary phylogenetic estimates, one using a comprehensive eight-gene alignment that maximizes t

Microbial distribution and abundance in the digestive system of five shipworm species (Bivalvia: Teredinidae).

Marine bivalves of the family Teredinidae (shipworms) are voracious consumers of wood in marine environments. In several shipworm species, dense communities of intracellular bacterial endosymbionts have been observed within specialized cells (bacteriocytes) of the gills (ctenidia). These bacteria are proposed to contribute to digestion of wood by the host. While the microbes of shipworm gills have been studied extensively in several species, the abundance and distribution of microbes in the digestive system have not been adequately addressed. Here we use Fluorescence In-Situ Hybridization (FIS

The mitogenome of Paphia euglypta (Bivalvia: Veneridae) and comparative mitogenomic analyses of three venerids.

Extraordinary variation has been found in mitochondrial (mt) genome inheritance, gene content and arrangement among bivalves. However, only few bivalve mt genomes have been comparatively analyzed to infer their evolutionary scenarios. In this study, the complete mt genome of the venerid Paphia euglypta (Bivalvia: Veneridae) was firstly studied and, secondly, it was comparatively analyzed with other venerids (e.g., Venerupis philippinarum and Meretrix petechialis) to better understand the mt genome evolution within a family. Though several common features such as the AT content, codon usage of

Comparative morphology and mitogenomics of freshwater mussels Koreosolenaia, Parvasolenaia, and Sinosolenaia (Bivalvia: Unionidae: Gonideinae).

BACKGROUND: Amidst the escalating loss of global biodiversity, freshwater mussels (family Unionidae) have become one of the most imperiled animal groups. Acquiring more biological and phylogenetic information on understudied taxa constitutes a pivotal aspect of conservation biology. Consequently, a comprehensive examination was conducted on Koreosolenaia, Parvasolenaia, and Sinosolenaia from China encompassing morphology, anatomy, distribution, and molecular systematics to provide theoretical support for future species endangerment assessments and biodiversity conservation. RESULTS: The shell

Classification and relationships of living species of Laternulidae (Bivalvia, Anomalodesmata): new light on lantern shells.

Species of the marine bivalve family Laternulidae are frequently misidentified with some having particularly tangled nomenclatural histories. To redress these problems all available type specimens or new images of them, totalling 52 of the 56 nominal species, were examined and assessed. Concurrently, new molecular analyses identified major clades and corroborated species boundaries based on shell characters. Two clades of laternulids were recognised as subfamilies Laternulinae and Exolaternulinae the latter introduced herein and characterised by presence of a lithodesma. A new classification o

A new species of chemosymbiotic clam (Bivalvia: Vesicomyidae) from the Nankai Trough and Mariana Forearc.

Chemosymbiotic vesicomyid clams in the subfamily Pliocardiinae are a major component of deep-sea chemosynthetic ecosystems, yet their diversity remains incompletely documented. Here, we report a new species of pliocardiine clam collected from two cold seeps, the 2,526 m deep Oomine Ridge site in the Nankai Trough, Japan and the 2,915 m deep Summit Site of South Chamorro Seamount, Mariana Forearc. This ovate species (maximum shell length 34.4 mm) is included in the genus Waisiuconcha Beets, 1943. It is most similar to Waisiuconcha helios Krylova & Janssen, 2006 but differs by having a larger sh

Discovery of chemoautotrophic symbiosis in the giant shipworm Kuphus polythalamia (Bivalvia: Teredinidae) extends wooden-steps theory.

The "wooden-steps" hypothesis [Distel DL, et al. (2000) Nature 403:725-726] proposed that large chemosynthetic mussels found at deep-sea hydrothermal vents descend from much smaller species associated with sunken wood and other organic deposits, and that the endosymbionts of these progenitors made use of hydrogen sulfide from biogenic sources (e.g., decaying wood) rather than from vent fluids. Here, we show that wood has served not only as a stepping stone between habitats but also as a bridge between heterotrophic and chemoautotrophic symbiosis for the giant mud-boring bivalve Kuphus polythal

Taxonomic reassessment of Scabies (Bivalvia: Unionidae) species in China based on multilocus and mitogenomic phylogenetic analyses.

Effective species conservation necessitates the ability to accurately differentiate among species, a challenge compounded by taxonomic uncertainties in freshwater mussels due to substantial intraspecific variation and pronounced phenotypic plasticity in shell morphology. The taxonomic status and species validity of Scabies longata and S. chinensis, two species endemic in China, have been under continuous debate since establishment. The lack of essential molecular data required for a comprehensive systematic study has resulted in the unresolved taxonomic status of these two species. This study

Cytochemical and immunofluorescence investigations of insulin-like producing cells in the intestine of Mytilus edulis L. (Bivalvia).

Insulin-like immunoreactivity can be localized to cells of the intestine in the area of the hepatopancreas of Mytilus edulis L. No cross-reactivity can be obtained with anti-glucagon, anti-gastrin, anti-pentagastrin or anti-caerulin. The cells containing the substance immunoreactive to mammalian anti-insulin, can be restrained with paraldehyde-fuchsin.

Computational modelling of wet adhesive mussel foot proteins (Bivalvia): Insights into the evolutionary convolution in diverse perspectives.

Underwater adhesion in mussels (Bivalvia) is an extreme adaptation to achieve robust and firm wet adhesion in the freshwater/brackish/ocean, which biochemically shaped through millions of years. The protein-based adhesion has huge prospective in various fields like industry, medical, etc. Currently, no comprehensive records related to the systematic documentation of structural and functional properties of Mussel foot proteins (Mfps). In this study, we identified the nine species of bivalves in which the complete sequence of at least one adhesive protein is known. The insilico characterization

Mulinia lateralis (Mollusca: Bivalvia) die-off in South Carolina: discovery of a vector for two elasmobranch cestode species.

Unexplained and episodic die-offs of the dwarf surf clam, Mulinia lateralis , have been reported on the West Atlantic coast, with such an occurrence in South Carolina in June 2010. A sample of live clams from the 2010 South Carolina event was collected, and 200 clams were measured and necropsied. Two species of tapeworm larvae were observed. Plerocercoids (Duplicibothrium sp.) occupied the digestive gland ducts, and merocercoids (Rhodobothrium sp.) were found beneath the mantle. Specimens of both species were sequenced to obtain partial 28S rRNA gene sequences, and they were identified as the

One becomes three: An integrative morphological and molecular analysis of the windowpane oyster Placuna (Bivalvia: Pectinida) reveals new species.

For decades, many marine animals have been considered to exhibit cosmopolitan or transoceanic distribution. This situation is prevalent in Asia, where many species were collected and named by American or European experts in the 1700s to early 1900s. Using the windowpane oysters Placuna-a small genus of bivalves with five recognized species-we show that careful analysis is required to reassess the validity of these species. Currently, only two species of Placuna (P. placenta and P. ephippium) widely reported in the Indo-Pacific region have been recorded from Chinese coastal waters. Here, we des

Reduction in reproductive activity from degeneration of testicular follicles in Megapitaria squalida (Mollusca: Bivalvia) exposed to metal pollution in the Gulf of California.

Over a reproductive cycle, the prevalence and intensity of degeneration of testicular follicles in Megapitaria squalida collected from the mining port of Santa Rosalia (a highly metal-polluted area), and San Lucas (a less polluted site), Gulf of California, Mexico, were evaluated. At San Lucas, most individuals had a typical testicular structure, and degeneration of testicular follicles was present in 9.5 % of spawning organisms. In contrast, at Santa Rosalia, 68 % of males, mainly in the ripe stage, had testicular degeneration (72 % severe intensity, mostly in medium and large-sized). Degener

First record of the nematode Echinocephalus pseudouncinatus (Gnathostomatidae, Spirurida) in an edible, commercial host, the pen shell Atrina maura (Bivalvia: Pinnidae).

We describe a nematode infestation of the Atrina maura, the most valuable pen shell fished in Mexico, for the first time. Observations by Mexican authorities indicated that parasites were found encysted in pen shell gonads. The aims of this study included: (i) to identify the parasite morphologically; (ii) to quantify the infestation in different tissues of the pen shell; and (iii) to establish the seasonal variation in gonadal development. During 2015, 10 to 40 pen shells were randomly collected each month from the same commercial bed, and gonads were preserved and processed histologically to

The gametogenic cycle and spawning of the short-necked clam, Paphia undulata Born, 1778 (Bivalvia: Veneridae) from Timsah Lake, Suez Canal, Egypt.

BACKGROUND: Paphia undulata, The Short-Necked Clam, is an edible marine bivalve that is consumed internationally and locally in Egypt. Overfishing and pollution have caused population declines in Egyptian fisheries during the last decade. Accurate reproductive biology knowledge is critical for designing long-term exploitation strategy for this resource. P. undulata spawning and gametogenic cycle research were carried out from January to December 2020 along Timsah Lake, Suez Canal, Egypt. RESULTS: These clams are functionally dioecious with a very low incidence of hermaphroditism. The sex rati

Scorched mussels (BIVALVIA: MYTILIDAE: BRACHIDONTINAE) from the temperate coasts of South America: phylogenetic relationships, trans-Pacific connections and the footprints of Quaternary glaciations.

This study addresses aspects of the phylogeny and phylogeography of scorched mussels (BIVALVIA: MYTILIDAE: BRACHIDONTINAE) from southern South America (Argentina and Chile), as well as their ecophylogenetic implications. Relationships were inferred from sequences of two nuclear (28S and 18S) and one mitochondrial (COI) genes, using Bayesian and maximum likelihood analyses. Our results indicate that the monophyletic BRACHIDONTINAE include three well supported clades: [i] Brachidontes Swainson (=Hormomya Mörch), [ii] Ischadium Jukes-Browne+Geukensia van de Poel, and [iii] Austromytilus Laseron+M

Chiropractic services in the active duty military setting: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Bivalves comprise a large, highly diverse taxon of invertebrate species. Developmental studies of neurogenesis among species of Bivalvia are limited. Due to a lack of neurogenesis information, it is difficult to infer a ground pattern for Bivalvia. To provide more comprehensive morphogenetic data on bivalve molluscs and relationships among molluscan clades, we investigated neurogenesis in the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, from the appearance of the first sensory cells to the formation of the larval ganglionic nervous system by co-immunocytochemistry of the neuronal markers FMR

The chromosomal genome sequence of the buttercup lucine, Anodontia alba Link, 1807 (Lucinida: Lucinidae) and its associated microbial metagenome sequences.

We present a genome assembly from an individual Anodontia alba (buttercup lucine; Mollusca; Bivalvia; Lucinida; Lucinidae). The genome sequence has a total length of 1 862.85 megabases. Most of the assembly (99.28%) is scaffolded into 18 chromosomal pseudomolecules. The mitochondrial genome has also been assembled, with a length of 18.48 kilobases. Gene annotation of this assembly by Ensembl identified 12 083 protein-coding genes. From the metagenome data, we recovered four bins, of which three were high-quality MAGs.
