Safety of tiotropium Respimat® in black or African-American patients with symptomatic asthma.

BACKGROUND: Black patients with asthma have a higher disease burden and greater morbidity compared with other racial/ethnic groups. Tiotropium Respimat®, as add-on to at least inhaled corticosteroids (ICS), improves lung function and asthma control and reduces asthma exacerbation risk in patients, with a safety profile comparable with placebo. This study aimed to assess the safety of tiotropium Respimat®, compared with placebo, in black or African-American patients. METHODS: Data were pooled from 12 randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, Phase II or III trials from the global Boehrin

Healthcare experiences of patients with Down syndrome who are Black, African American, of African descent, or of mixed race.

Scant research has explored the healthcare experiences of people with Down syndrome (DS) in the United States who are Black, African American, of African descent, or of mixed race. The purpose of this study was to identify and describe the barriers and facilitators that such patients and their caregivers face when accessing healthcare. We gathered data in three ways: focus groups with caregivers, a national survey completed by caregivers, and in-depth interviews with primary care providers. Many caregivers and primary care physicians felt that patients with DS who are Black, African American,

Kidney transplant in black recipients: are African Europeans different from African Americans?

Despite recent improvement, significant racial disparities in outcome still persist after renal transplantation among African American patients in the United States. This study evaluated the association of race and ethnicity with allograft outcomes in a French population of 952 Caucasian (Cauc) patients and 140 African European (AE) patients who underwent renal transplantation in our center between 1987 and 2003. Demographic characteristics were similar for the two cohorts other than cause of end-stage renal failure (more hypertension among AE and more polycystic kidney disease among Cauc) and

Technology-Based Interventions for Substance Use Treatment Among People Who Identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Native: Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, racial and ethnic disparities in substance use treatment outcomes are persistent, especially among underrepresented minority (URM) populations. Technology-based interventions (TBIs) for substance use treatment show promise in reducing barriers to evidence-based treatment, yet no studies have described how TBIs may impact racial or ethnic health equity. OBJECTIVE: This study explored whether TBIs in substance use treatment research promote health equity among people who identify as African American or Black, Hispanic or Latino, and American Indian or Alaska Na

Cutaneous lymphomas in African American/Black patients: pitfalls and presentations.

This review describes and highlights differences in clinical presentations of cutaneous lymphomas (CLs), particularly in darker skin types, i.e., Skin of Color (SOC). We illustrate differences in clinical features on physical exam that can be a diagnostic challenge and suggest ways to recognize and identify these conditions at an early stage through a high level of suspicion. The review includes a summary of the epidemiology of various CLs, specifically highlighting the presentation and incidence in African American/Black patients, where the data are available. We also include a discussion of

Health Inequities in Pancreatic Disorders in the Black/African American Community.

Pancreatic diseases, such as acute pancreatitis (AP), chronic pancreatitis (CP), and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), disproportionately affect Black/African American (AA) communities in the United States, leading to high incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates. This paper outlines disparities in pancreatic diseases among AAs and explores contributing factors beyond individual biology and behavior, emphasizing the role of social determinants of health (SDoH), including poor access to healthcare, lack of inclusion in research studies, and other crucial systemic and structural factors

Disparities in post-traumatic neurodegeneration among adults of African American or Black racial identity: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: This scoping review will evaluate and synthesise what is known about the impact of structural and social determinants of health on neurodegeneration among adults of African American or Black (AAB) racial identity with a history of traumatic brain injury (TBI). The primary objective is to examine how structural factors, such as healthcare access, influence disparities in neurodegeneration following TBI. Given higher rates of TBI and worse outcomes among Black individuals compared with White individuals, this review seeks to fill the gap in research concerning underrepresentation o

Black Grief, Black Healing: Exploring African American Parents Grief With Cultural Implications for Treatment.

African American parents experience child loss at disproportionately high rates, yet family systems and grief literature have largely overlooked this population's grief experience. This paper examines how therapists can provide culturally responsive care to African American parents navigating the death of a child. Drawing on existing literature, this paper expounds on the historical trends within the African American family system while delineating unique African American grief practices. Practical and culturally relevant clinical practices such as facilitating robust social support networks,

Family History and Uterine Fibroid Development in Black and African American Women.

IMPORTANCE: Uterine fibroids are an understudied condition, with earlier onset in Black than White women. Prior studies of the importance of family history on fibroid development are limited by reliance on hospital-based participant selection, poorly defined measures of family history, and nonsystematic fibroid assessment. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether family history is a risk factor for fibroid development using prospective ultrasonography data to identify incident fibroids and measure fibroid growth and standardized methods to ascertain family history. Examination of hair experiences among girls with Black/African American identities.

Negative hair experiences can impact psychological well-being and are an integral part of development through childhood, adolescence, and beyond. The current study utilized a mixed-methods approach to capture the lived experiences of girls relating to their hair. Participants were 105 girls between the ages of 10-15 years old recruited via social media, email, and social organizations with Black/African American, or biracial communities. Satisfaction with natural hair, perceived bullying and teasing relating to hair, social comparisons, and pressure from family and friends were assessed. Appro

Abstinence phobia among adult African American/Black cannabis users.

OBJECTIVE: African American/Black individuals experience significant health disparities, particularly as it relates to cannabis use. As such, there is a need to identify intrapersonal factors related to more severe patterns of use among this subpopulation. Worry about quitting or reducing cannabis as a result of the anticipated anxiety-related states during deprivation (i.e., abstinence phobia) is one factor that is theoretically important in the context of cannabis-related disparities. METHOD: The current study sought to examine the cross-sectional association between abstinence phobia and c

Support Needs and Gaps for Black and African American Individuals With Fibromyalgia During Pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with disabilities, including those with fibromyalgia, have historically faced barriers and stigma in healthcare settings. This issue extends to reproductive health areas, such as pregnancy. Previous research on the pregnancy experiences of individuals with disabilities has predominantly focused on physical or visible disabilities. Furthermore, many studies have overlooked the intersectionality of additional identities, including race and gender identity. This thematic analysis aimed to provide insight into the unique experience of pregnancy for individuals with fibromyal

The Black and African American Connections to Parkinson's Disease (BLAAC PD) study protocol.

Determining the genetic contributions to Parkinson's disease (PD) across diverse ancestries is a high priority as this work can guide therapeutic development in a global setting. The genetics of PD spans the etiological risk spectrum, from rare, highly deleterious variants linked to monogenic forms with Mendelian patterns of inheritance, to common variation involved in sporadic disease. A major limitation in PD genomics research is lack of racial and ethnic diversity. Enrollment disparities have detrimental consequences on the generalizability of results and exacerbate existing inequities in c
