Lures that are used to attract German cockroaches, Blattella germanica (L.), to traps were compared in olfactometer assays in the laboratory and in trapping experiments in cockroach-infested homes and a swine farm. In olfactometer assays, AgriSense GP-2 was the most attractive lure, followed by peanut butter, and distiller's grain. Other lures, including Trapper tablet; Victor pheromone, a crude fecal extract that ostensibly contains B. germanica aggregation pheromone; and Victor food lure elicited upwind orientation from <50% of the test insects. Peanut butter and distiller's grain were equal

Commercial and experimental formulations of abamectin-based baits were evaluated in laboratory and field studies against the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). In continuous exposure tests with adult males, toxicity and presumably bait consumption varied with the design of the bioassay. LT50s ranged from approximately 0.9 to > 41 d for an aerosol gel formulation for males deprived of water for 72 h before the test and for undeprived males tested with alternative food and water, respectively. Dry formulations had lower LT50s than water containing formulations for nondeprived males. The

Extensive usage and heavy reliance on insecticides have led to the development of insecticide resistance in the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.). Six field-collected strains of B. germanica from Singapore were used to investigate resistance to fipronil and dieldrin. The three strains (Boat Quay, Cavenagh Road, and Ghimmoh Road) with greatest resistance to fipronil were subjected to selection with fipronil bait up to the F5 generation. Synergism assay and molecular detection of a target site mutation were used to elucidate the mechanism of fipronil resistance in these strains. With th

Insecticides can greatly limit the impacts of cockroaches on indoor environment and human health. Insecticide resistance, however, reduces the efficacy of insecticides and increases insecticide use by both residents and pest control professionals. This study examined the relationship between insecticide cross-resistance and associated gene expression across nine different German cockroach populations from the eastern U.S. Using vial bioassays, we identified significantly correlated resistance between three insecticides from different classes (indoxacarb, lambda-cyhalothrin, fipronil), with pot

The German cockroach, Blatella germanica (L.), is a suspected vector of several enteric bacterial pathogens, including Escherichia coli, among livestock and humans. However, little is known about the factors that influence bacterial transmission by cockroaches. Here, we orally infected B. germanica with various laboratory and field strains of E. coli and examined bacterial titers over time to shed new light on the factors that influence the dynamics of infection. Our results reveal that a laboratory strain of E. coli is largely cleared within 48 h while one field isolate can persist in a major

BACKGROUND: Gel baits are one of the most effective tools for managing German cockroaches (Blattella germanica L.); even so, it remains unclear how German cockroaches locate baits. To investigate bait perception by German cockroaches, we evaluated differences in trap catch after applying cockroach gel baits onto glue traps and placing these baited traps at various distances away from both harborages and arena walls in large (110 cm) diameter still-air arenas. In addition, we modified various environmental factors (access to food/water, harborage size) and evaluated the impacts of these modific

Over-the-counter (OTC) insecticide products are popular, easily available, and inexpensive do-it-yourself options for home residents. In this study, we investigated the performance of OTC insecticides consisting of bait and spray products against susceptible and field-collected strains of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae) using several test methods. In open arena bioassays, all OTC baits tested were ineffective on field-collected German cockroaches. The least effective OTC bait was unable to kill all test cockroaches of any strains at 14 d post-treatment. D

This study assessed the toxicity and flushing activity of 5 commercially available botanical and essential oil formulations against 3 strains of German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae): a susceptible laboratory strain (S) and 2 insecticide-resistant field strains (D and E). Three bioassays were conducted: continuous exposure to dry residues, direct spray application, and flushing. The direct spray assay yielded the fastest kill, with a median survival time (MST) of 1 min when strain S was exposed to Essentria at the high label rate, likely due to rapid dermal and spi

Baits are one of the most effective German cockroach (Blattella germanica L.) control methods. However, despite their efficacy, the nature of their application causes them to be prone to contamination with a number of potential chemicals. This contamination, either by other insecticides or commonly used cleaning products, is therefore touted as a reason for bait failure. To address this concern, this study evaluated the efficacy and consumption of 2 cockroach gel baits (Advion, Maxforce FC Magnum) after contamination with a variety of insecticides and cleaning products. Contamination of baits

Populations of Blattella germanica (L.) (German cockroach) have been documented worldwide to be resistant to a wide variety of insecticides with multiple modes of action. The phenylpyrazole insecticide fipronil has been used extensively to control German cockroach populations, exclusively in baits, yet the highest reported fipronil resistance is 38-fold in a single population. We evaluated five populations of German cockroaches, collected in 2018-2019 in apartments in North Carolina and assayed in 2019, to determine the status of fipronil resistance in the state. Resistance ratios in field-col

Blattella germanica is the most prevalent synanthropic pest and negatively impacts human health, as do the synthetic chemical insecticides used to control them. In contrast, Metarhizium spp. is a well known fungus that can infect insects and other arthropods, causing death to their hosts. When cultivated in liquid medium it produces blastospores. This propagule has the potential to be used as a biological control agent for cockroaches. The aim of this study was to identify eleven native Metarhizium strains from Argentina through molecular taxonomy, evaluate blastospores and biomass production

Despite insecticide resistance issues, pyrethroids and fipronil have continued to be used extensively to control the German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.) (Blattodea: Ectobiidae) for more than two decades. We evaluated the physiological insecticide resistance in five German cockroach populations collected from 2018 to 2020 and measured the extent of metabolic detoxification and target-site insensitivity resistance mechanisms. Topically applied doses of the 3 x LD95 of deltamethrin, fipronil, DDT, or dieldrin of a susceptible strain (UCR, Diagnostic Dose) failed to cause >23% mortality, an

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica, can be a vector of human enteric bacterial pathogens, including Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). Transmission of such pathogens by cockroaches has largely been considered a passive mechanical process, but recent studies have argued against this dogma by demonstrating bacterial proliferation within the cockroach gut and the necessity of specific bacterial genes for successful transmission in the feces, revealing unappreciated biological complexity in the vector-pathogen relationship between cockroaches and S. Typhimurium. Howev

Insects have evolved an extremely sensitive olfactory system that is essential for a series of physiological and behavioral activities. Some carboxylesterases (CCEs) comprise a major subfamily of odorant-degrading enzymes (ODEs) playing a crucial role in odorant signal inactivation to maintain the odorant receptor sensitivity. In this study, 93 CCEs were annotated in the genome of the German cockroach Blattella germanica, a serious urban pest. Phylogenetic and digital tissue expression pattern analyses identified two antenna-enriched CCEs, BgerCCE021e3 and BgerCCE021d1, as candidate ODEs. RNA

This paper describes two experiments aimed at establishing the orange head cockroach (Eublaberus posticus) as a model organism for behavioral research. While many invertebrate models are available, cockroaches have several benefits over others that show impressive behavioral abilities. Most notably, cockroaches are long-lived generalists that can be maintained in controlled indoor laboratory conditions. While the most popular cockroaches in behavioral research, Periplaneta americana and Blattella germanica, have the potential to become domestic pests, our E. posticus is extremely unlikely to e

The German cockroach, Blattella germanica (L.), is a major urban insect pest primarily controlled by insecticides, including pyrethroid sprays, fipronil baits, and indoxacarb baits. However, widespread pyrethroid resistance increases the probability that cockroaches will survive treatments in the field. Many insecticides are applied concurrently or repetitively on a periodic basis, meaning survivors have the chance to be re-treated, but any lasting physiological effects from initial survival may impact the performance of subsequent treatments. We investigated the effects of sublethal deltameth

Omnivorous synanthropic cockroaches, such as the German cockroach (Blattella germanica), are reservoirs and vectors of enteric bacterial pathogens. A lifestyle conducive to frequent encounters with high loads of diverse bacteria may have led to the evolution of unique innate immune systems in these insects. The innate immune response of insects relies largely on generalized mechanisms to sense and eliminate foreign microbes. However, analyses of the genomes of common synanthropic cockroaches previously revealed a repertoire of pathogen associated molecular pattern (PAMP) receptors and antimicr

Around 150 million years ago, eusocial termites evolved from within the cockroaches, 50 million years before eusocial Hymenoptera, such as bees and ants, appeared. Here, we report the 2-Gb genome of the German cockroach, Blattella germanica, and the 1.3-Gb genome of the drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. We show evolutionary signatures of termite eusociality by comparing the genomes and transcriptomes of three termites and the cockroach against the background of 16 other eusocial and non-eusocial insects. Dramatic adaptive changes in genes underlying the production and perception of pherom

Cockroaches are considered mechanical transmitters of infectious diseases, posing a threat to human health. This study assessed the potential of cockroaches in food-related environments to mechanically transmit intestinal pathogens. Cockroaches captured with traps were placed together into a low temperature refrigerator at - 80° for 2 h. Standard taxonomic keys and Fluorescent quantitative PCR techniques were applied for species identification and digestive tract etiological examination. A total of 360 cockroach traps were placed, with a positive rate of 20.8%, and 266 cockroaches were capture
