Bleaching of mustard oil with some alternative bleaching agents and acid activated clay.

An attempt was made to study the bleaching ability of some alternative adsorbents like rice husk ash (HC), acid activated rice husk ash (AC), rice husk silica (S), and Al(OH)(3) gel to replace commercial Acid Activated Clay (AAC, like Tonsil Earth: TE) for bleaching of mustard oil. Quantities of AAC used were varied from 0.5 to 2.0 % (w/w). It was used as such and along with commercial activated carbon (0.25-0.75 %, w/w), and laboratory prepared Al(OH)(3) gel, rice husk ash and silica isolated from husk. The results show that quantity of AAC to be used can be reduced to 1.00 to 1.25% (w/w) by

Effects of bleaching agents on human enamel light reflectance.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth whitening has been associated with splitting-up chromogenic molecules by hydrogen peroxides. Though micromorphological alterations are well documented, little is known about optical changes as a function of shifting in wavelengths. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to measure reflectance changes after bleaching in vitro by using a spectrometer. METHODS: Forty-eight enamel slabs (diameter = 5 mm) were prepared from the sound enamel of extracted human teeth that were: 1) fully impacted, 2) from juveniles ages 10 to 16 years, 3) from adults 35 to 45 years of age and 4

Tubular permeability to calcium hydroxide and to bleaching agents.

Recent reports of clinical cases suggest that cervical root resorption may follow bleaching of endodontically treated teeth. Inflammatory root resorption may be arrested by placement of calcium hydroxide into the root canal. The dentinal tubules are assumed to be a possible route of action for both agents. pH Values of the medium surrounding the tooth after placement of bleaching agents and calcium hydroxide within the root canals were determined in this study. Thirty extracted single-rooted human teeth were divided into three equal groups. The pulp cavity of the experimental teeth was filled

Bleaching of a discoloured non-vital tooth: use of a sodium perborate/water paste as the bleaching agent.

Bleaching materials containing hydrogen peroxide have been used successfully for the treatment of discoloured non-vital teeth; however, their use has occasionally been associated with external root resorption. Some evidence exists that sodium perborate mixed with water is as effective as sodium perborate mixed with hydrogen peroxide. A case is presented which supports this and a step-by-step technique is described.

Effect of bleaching agents on dentin permeability to Streptococcus faecalis.

Bacterial contamination of dentin may be a contributing factor in the development of bleaching-associated root resorption. In this study, the effect of commonly used bleaching agents on the permeability of dentin tubules to Streptococcus faecalis was evaluated. Sixty extracted bovine incisors were horizontally sectioned apically to the cementoenamel junction. In each tooth, a standard cavity was prepared, the pulp tissue extirpated, and remnants of soft tissue and smear layer were removed. Following rinsing and repeated autoclave sterilization, the teeth were divided into four groups, each tre

Extraradicular diffusion of hydrogen peroxide and pH changes associated with intracoronal bleaching of discoloured teeth using different bleaching agents.

AIM: To evaluate the extraradicular pH and hydrogen peroxide (HP) diffusion when either 35% carbamide peroxide (CP), 35% HP or sodium perborate (SP) is used for intracoronal bleaching of artificially discoloured teeth. METHODOLOGY: Single rooted extracted human premolars were stained with whole blood cells. After shaping and cleaning, they were root filled and a base cement placed 1 mm below the buccal cementoenamel junction (CEJ). Four cemental defects were prepared just below the CEJ on each root surface. The teeth were randomly divided into four groups of 11 specimens, and intracoronally b

Effect of various types of sodium perborate on the pH of bleaching agents.

Time-dependent changes in the pH value of various types of sodium perborate solutions used as bleaching agents were evaluated. Sodium perborate-monohydrate (MH), sodium perborate-trihydrate (TRH), and sodium perborate-tetrahydrate are available. Each perborate was mixed with 10%, 15%, or 30% fresh hydrogen peroxide or with bidistilled water in a powder to liquid ratio of 2 g:1 ml, respectively. The pH values were recorded at baseline and after 1h, 1 day, 3 days, and 7 days, respectively. At baseline the pH values of MH, TRH, and tetrahydrate in conjunction with 30% H2O2 were 8.7, 7.0, and 7.5,

[Bleaching agent poisoning with sodium chlorite. The toxicology and clinical course].

A woman gardener of 49 years of age suffered an inhalational intoxication from chlorine dioxide while bleaching dried flowers. Preparation of the bleaching solutions was associated with a sharp pungent smell, coughing, pharyngeal irritation and headache. Seven hours later increasing cough and dyspnoea led to hospitalisation. Clinical findings were tachypnoea, tachycardia, and rales of auscultation; clinical chemistry revealed marked leucocytosis. Chest X-ray did not yield any abnormal findings. Initially the vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in 1 s markedly reduced and the resistance

Genotoxicity and oral tissue damage associated with tooth bleaching agents: A scoping review.

Tooth bleaching is one of the most frequently performed esthetic procedures in dentistry. Although peroxide-based bleaching agents effectively promote color change, their decomposition generates reactive oxygen species that may induce oxidative stress, cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, inflammation, and oral tissue alterations. This scoping review mapped and synthesized the available evidence regarding genotoxicity and oral tissue damage associated with tooth bleaching procedures, identified the biological models and analytical methods used to investigate these outcomes, and explored differences amo

Evaluation of a 10 percent carbamide peroxide gel vital bleaching agent.

A clinical study determined the whitening effect of a 10 percent carbamide peroxide gel on the teeth of 10 subjects. Histological evaluation of the effect of this agent on human tooth pulps and hamster cheek pouch tissues was also undertaken. The gel provided a modest, but unpredictable, whitening of discoloured teeth. A localised mild to moderate inflammatory response was found in some of the pulps of teeth that had been bleached. No soft-tissue changes were observed in the hamster cheek pouches.

Experimental study to test the potential tumor promotion effect of a tooth bleaching agent.

Carbamide Peroxide is routinely employed as a whitener for tooth enamel. Oral mucosa protection is recommended to avoid inflammatory reactions. Experimental work has demonstrated its irritative effect on gastric mucosa when swallowed. The activity of certain oxidizing agents as tumoral promoters has been demonstrated and associated to their capacity to induce hyperplasia. Within this context it seemed of interest to assess the possible action of carbamide peroxide as a tumoral promoter in oral mucosa with or without a precancerous condition. Its action was tested in 2 models which are highly s
