Cord blood is an excellent source of stem cells which are universal for all other cells of the whole body. They have the ability to develop in any of the body cells, depending on stimulation by different growth factors. The ease of sampling, cryopreservation, and above all successful engraftment make placental blood a possible alternative for bone marrow donation. The advantages of cord blood cells over bone marrow stem cells in allogeneic transplants include their young age and immature status, which reduce the severity of graft versus host reaction. However, the number of cells is much more

The creation of umbilical cord blood (UCB) banks raises interesting medical, social, economic and ethical issues. This paper reviews the ethical problems specifically. In this respect, it evaluates: a) whether there are advantages to the use of UCB compared to bone marrow, b) whether or not it is ethical to create UCB banks, c) whether their creation is ethically acceptable in terms of their clinical usefulness or d) the use made of them for therapeutic purposes, and finally e) whether their creation is ethically justified from a cost/profitability point of view. We focus primarily on evaluati

Cord blood (CB) is a unique product, rich in haemopoietic stem cells (HSC), that is currently used in the transplantation setting to restore haemopoiesis. It restores haemopoietic stem cell function in patients suffering from malignancies, bone marrow (BM) failure disorders and inherited metabolic and immunological disorders. Related and unrelated CB donations have been successfully transplanted in both the paediatric and adult settings. CB, previously considered a waste product, can be collected from both vaginal deliveries and caesarean sections, either in utero or ex utero, at no risk to th

Since the first successful transplantation of placental/umbilical cord blood (PCB) in 1988 at St. Louis Hospital in Paris, the effort has been made to establish large scale cord blood banks for allogeneic transplantation around the world. Recent reports from New York Blood Center which stocks 9000 units and shipped 700 units to US and other countries indicates that PCB transplantation is as effective as bone marrow transplantation. There are many cord blood banks in the world now and the number of PCB units stocked in the world are increasing rapidly. The methods for collection and processing

Cord blood (CB) contains a sufficient number of haemopoietic progenitor cells and can be used as an alternative to bone marrow transplantation. To date, a number of transplants using cord blood-derived stem cells from HLA-identical siblings and unrelated donors have been successfully performed. However, only approximately 30% of patients have an HLA-identical sibling while the rest are reliant on finding an HLA-compatible unrelated donor. This is particularly difficult for patients from ethnic minorities since the majority of unrelated bone marrow donor volunteers are from Caucasoid ancestry.

This represents an attempt to briefly outline the type of blood bank and transfusion service we at Montrose Memorial Hospital have developed and utilized to supply our blood needs. Basically it is a system based on a fairly large list of known, pretested, and available donors who can be contacted quickly to supply blood upon demand. Only bare minimum stock supplies are maintained. The major problem is waste of blood, but Montrose experience continues to fall below the average for rural areas. Although the starting and maintaining of this walking blood bank was and is a complicated involved, an

This paper deals with the actuality of the Umbilical Cord Blood Banks (UCBB). Its aim is to offer the necessary notions for the understanding of their nature and of the ethical problems which they carry associated. In order to do this it will lean, on one hand, on the actual bibliography about blood of the umbilical cord and its present and future applications, and on the other hand, on the document of the European Group of Ethics where this issue is discussed. It is of special interest here the existence of the banks called "autologous" that, for some authors, seem to contradict the principle

CONTEXT: A total of 30 million blood components are transfused each year in India. Blood safety thus becomes a top priority, especially with a population of around 1.23 billion and a high prevalence rate of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in general population. Nucleic acid amplification testing (NAT) in blood donor screening has been implemented in many developed countries to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted viral infections (TTIs). NAT takes care of the dynamics of window period of viruses and offers the safest blood pack for

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a disease caused by Leishmania parasites. While predominantly transmitted by sandflies, cases of VL transmitted through blood transfusion have been reported, particularly in immunocompromised recipients. Although Leishmania parasites have been found in blood donors in some VL endemic areas, this has never been studied in East-Africa, where HIV prevalence is relatively high. We established the prevalence of asymptomatic Leishmania infection and associated socio-demographic factors among blood donors presenting at two blood bank sites (Metema and Gondar) in northwe

The general public's awareness of, and attitude to, canine and feline blood donation is poorly understood. Increasing understanding of pet owners' thoughts about donation may allow more effective blood donor recruitment. The aims of this study were to investigate pet owners' awareness of small animal blood donation and their attitude and motivations regarding their pet being a blood donor. A mixed methods approach was used, with data collected from 158 pet owners attending a first-opinion veterinary clinic using a written questionnaire of closed and open questions. Most owners were unaware tha

Despite the huge number of volunteer donors registered worldwide, only a mean of 50% of patients not having a family donor are transplanted with an unrelated donor. Since 1990, a network has been implemented among some European registries. With the help of the European Community, a more sophisticated network has been developed, the European Marrow Donor Information System (EMDIS). A new project underwent development by registries and the Bone Marrow Donor Worldwide: the EMDIS Cord Blood Registry. It will in the future permit to obtain after a search request, one report containing all of the be

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to report the presentation and outcomes of three cases of ligneous conjunctivitis (LC) treated successfully with topical plasminogen concentrate (TPC).
DESIGN: Aggregate results of three n-of-1 clinical trials.
PARTICIPANTS: Three patients from a tertiary pediatric health care center with a recent diagnosis of LC due to plasminogen deficiency.
METHODS: Three patients with LC and low serum plasminogen activity were enrolled in n = 1 clinical trials. Patients received hourly TPC eye drops in the affected eye, tapered per treatment response to once dail

BACKGROUND: Private umbilical cord blood banking is a for-profit industry in which parents pay to store blood for potential future use. Governments have noted the tendency for private banks to oversell the potential for cord blood use, especially in relation to speculative cell therapies not yet supported by clinical evidence. We assessed the regulatory landscape governing private cord bank marketing in Canada.
MAIN BODY: Because the problematic marketing of private cord blood banking for future use often relates to speculative future cell therapies that do not exist and are not being adverti

The infection of people with haemophilia by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through blood transfusions demonstrated the potential risks of infectious disease transmission by transfusions. The microorganisms that can be transmitted through transfusion include: hepatitis viruses B, C, D, and G, HIV, cytomegalovirus, human T lymphotrophic virus (HTLV I and II), Treponema pallidum, Brucella spp, Toxoplasma gondii, Plasmodium spp and trypanosoma cruzi. We estimated the prevalence of transfusion-transmissible HIV, hepatitis B and C viruses, syphilis, and Plasmodium falciparum infection in two gro

Transfusion safety in Mexico depends on 2 essential pillars: The proper clinical selection of donors and the effective application of screening tests established in current regulations. Among these tests, it is included mandatory detection of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), as well as Trypanosoma cruzi and Treponema pallidum, all considered highly relevant pathogens due to their potential for bloodborne transmission and their clinical impact. Each year, thousands of people in the country acquire HCV, HBV, or HIV infections, and a significan

Cord blood (CB) stem and progenitor cells from related donors have been transplanted for past 20 years and from unrelated donors issued by public CB banks for 16 years. This brief look at public CB banking highlights aspects of its current status to suggest that accomplishing the currently required tasks, though no small undertaking, is not enough: much remains to be contributed. CB banking started in the 1930s, collecting blood for transfusion and showed that CB could be effectively collected, stored and administered intravenously without negative consequences. The realization that it contain

The author of this article recalls his visit to a blood donor center in 700 bed general Red Cross Hospital in Shanghai. Though the blood banking he describes might be viewed as simplistic and devoid of sophistication, the author believes that the report should serve as a stimulus to reevaluate our blood banking procedures. Are they redundant? Are they all necessary? Are they cost effective?
