Therapeutic apheresis : official journal of the International Society for Apheresis and the Japanese Society for Apheresis2002eng
An elevated platelet count is now a common finding in both hospitalized and ambulatory patients with the advent of automated complete blood cell counters. Clinicians may be called upon to make a distinction between a reactive process and a primary hematologic disorder as the cause of a thrombocytosis and to determine whether treatment is indicated. Essential thrombocythemia and other myeloproliferative disorders may present with marked increases in the platelet counts and may be associated with thrombohemorrhagic complications. Reactive thrombocytosis can be caused by iron deficiency and a var

BACKGROUND: Universal leukodepletion (LD) has been implemented in the United Kingdom to reduce the risk of transfusion-transmitted variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. If LD causes microvesiculation of blood cells, however, potentially infectious membrane-associated prion could reach the final products.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We have measured microvesicles (MV) derived from red cells (RBC-MV), platelets (PLT-MV), and white blood cells (WBC-MV) and cellular prion protein (PrP(c)) in blood components produced by four whole-blood, five RBC, three PLT, and two plasma LD filters and three platele

BACKGROUND: WBC depletion by filtration may prevent the transmission of HTLV-I, which requires cell-to-cell contact. The removal of HTLV-I-infected cells in routinely filtered blood cell components was measured.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: The study was conducted in Martinique where systematic screening for HTLV-I and -II and universal leukoreduction are mandatory. HTLV-I was quantified by use of real-time PCR in 8 RBC units and 4 PLT concentrates before and after filtration. HTLV-I proviral load in PBMNCs was determined in five of the eight HTLV-I-infected blood donors.
RESULTS: The amount of

Red and white cell lysis buffers were investigated to determine their ability to remove blood components from cervical smears prior to IR microspectroscopy. A white cell lysis buffer was effective in increasing the spectral reproducibility and sample homogeneity and in reducing the presence of inflammatory exudate, particularly leukocytes, from cervical smears. The reduction of leukocytes appeared to cause abnormal samples to be grouped with normal samples, resulting in poor discrimination. Despite differences between the cytological and histological diagnoses of cervical abnormalities, the re

Therapeutic apheresis is a term that describes numerous different procedures that remove pathological substances from the body. They are used in cases when conservative treatment measures fail, and may be useful as an adjuvant method for treatment of different diseases which have a common feature pathogenic protein substance (paraproteins, antibodies...) or pathogenic substance attached to proteins (toxins), that has to be removed from the body. These substances could be removed by nonselective (plasmapheresis and therapeutic plasma exchange), semiselective (cascade apheresis) or selective met

The WAA apheresis registry was established in 2003 and an increasing number of centers have since then included their experience and data of their procedures. The registry now contains data of more than 74,000 apheresis procedures in more than 10,000 patients. This report shows that the indications for apheresis procedures are changing towards more oncological diagnoses and stem cell collections from patients and donors and less therapeutic apheresis procedures. In centers that continue to register, the total extent of apheresis procedures and patients treated have expanded during the latest y

Apheresis, the selective removal or collection of blood components, has become an essential pillar of modern transfusion medicine, serving both donor and therapeutic purposes. While high-income countries have achieved wide adoption of automated apheresis for component collection and disease management, its use in Africa, including Ethiopia, remains limited. In Ethiopia, apheresis services are confined to a few facilities within the Ethiopian Blood and Tissue Bank Service (EBTBS) and select private institutions. Key challenges include inadequate infrastructure, unreliable supply chains, a short

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Currently, different methods for extracorporeal elimination of atherogenic apolipoprotein B100 containing lipoprotein particles are used in clinical practice. Most of them effectively remove both lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] and LDL. The aim of this review is to highlight research describing the clinical advantages of specific Lp(a) immunosorption compared with other lipoprotein apheresis systems.
RECENT FINDINGS: Data on the utility of lipoprotein apheresis in patients with elevated Lp(a) level are limited. However, several longitudinal studies demonstrated improvement in cardio

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: For the past 40 years, apheresis, in particular, lipoprotein apheresis, has been the therapy of choice to lower LDL-C for familial hypercholesterolemia patients with uncontrolled dyslipidemia and cardiovascular disease. With the advent of recent and future lipid-modifying agents and their ability to lower LDL-C, the question arises on what will be the future of lipoprotein apheresis.
RECENT FINDINGS: Lipoprotein apheresis lowers not only plasma levels of apolipoprotein B lipoproteins but also markers of vascular inflammation and blood rheology. Other vascular diseases, not

In the last few years, therapeutic apheresis (TA) has emerged as a valuable treatment option for certain life-threatening cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and for all the cardiac dysfunctions caused by autoimmune or metabolic disorders. Besides the well-established indications for apheresis treatment, such as familial hypercholesterolaemia, hyperviscosity syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), we discuss the novel approaches in the therapy of dilated cardiomyopathy, cardiac failure and some specific syndromes of severe dysfunction occurring after heart transplantation. The ratio

Lipoprotein apheresis (LA) remains a critical therapeutic approach for patients with severe lipid disorders, particularly those who fail to achieve target LDL-C or lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels despite advances in pharmacological therapies. While new therapies, such as PCSK9 inhibitors, antisense oligonucleotides, and siRNA-based treatments, have expanded the options for lipid management, LA continues to serve as an essential last resort for high-risk individuals. Patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) or severe hypercholesterolemia (sHCH) often require LA to mitigate ex

Data collection on apheresis activities in Italy throughout 2015 including techniques, clinical indications and adverse effects was performed by means of a SidEM model questionnaire (aggregate data). These data provided by 67 Apheresis Units from 17 Italian regions, albeit rough, are sufficiently informative, mainly in comparison with previous surveys on these statistics. PEx has been the most frequent technique for plasma removal/treatment (11787 procedures) followed by LDL-apheresis (927 procedures). ECP/photopheresis has been the most frequent cytapheresis procedure: 6,606 session, mainlyby

Apheresis is an effective desensitization modality for removing antibodies against donor-specific human leukocyte antigens or ABO blood type antigens to facilitate transplantation. Apheresis is also used to treat acute antibody-mediated rejection, in conjunction with immunosuppressive medications, in recurrent focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis and other glomerular diseases, in correction of coagulopathy, in supportive therapy in acute liver failure patients awaiting liver transplant, and in the treatment of drug-induced thrombotic microangiopathy. Transplant recipients who receive apheres

Therapeutic apheresis is an extracorporeal blood purification technique designed for the removal of either plasma (plasmapheresis) or cellular blood components (cytapheresis). One of the main indications for the use of apheresis is in the treatment of the hyperviscosity syndromes that can result from either the presence of abnormal plasma components, such as antibodies, immune complexes, paraproteins, and cryoglobulins, or the excessive increase in blood cells as seen in polycythemia, leukemias, and myeloproliferative diseases. Apheresis involves withdrawal of anticoagulated blood via a vascul

In this review the role of the latest generation of leukodepletion blood filters and the adverse reaction of leukocytes i.e. alloimmunisation, immunosuppression, nonhaemolytic febrile transfusion reaction, platelet refractoriness, transmission of infectious agents are described and discussed. Leukocyte-poor blood component is indicated for patients with a history of nonhaemolytic febrile transfusion reaction, in avoiding alloimmunisation in patients waiting for transplantation or platelet refractoriness and in preventing CMV-infection. In the review the role of microaggregate filters in transf

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a non-profit, vein-to-vein transfusion organisation serving approximately 56 million people across eight of South Africa's nine provinces. SANBS has evolved into one of the most comprehensive blood services on the African continent. Operating within a uniquely challenging epidemiological and socioeconomic milieu-characterised by the world's highest HIV prevalence among persons aged 15-49 years (approximately 19.1%) and a Gini coefficient of 0.63, reflecting extreme income inequality-SANBS has developed innovative service delivery models to en

The AIDS crisis and the fear of blood product contamination stimulated the development of a designated plasma collection and transfusion for patients with common variable immune deficiency. Four patients have been maintained over 1 year; 5 years and 10 months; 8 years and 7 months; and 12 years. A new crisis affecting commercial IgG manufacturing, owing to recalls, has made the life saving product scarce, threatening patients' health maintenance. Our experience over a long time has demonstrated that plasma transfusion is equivalent to management with commercial IgG. The program of product coll

The WAA registry has been active since 2002. It allows bed side registration of safety and efficacy data. The data each center enters is accessible for its own use but also used for merged analysis. Most types of procedures are represented. Treatments of many severe diseases as well as the collection of autologous and donor cells for therapeutic use especially in oncologic diseases are recorded. Previous reports have shown a successive reduction in adverse events (AE) over the years. The aim of the present report is to update data of the risk for AE during the years from 2013 to Oct 2024. The Italian Registry of Therapeutic Apheresis (IRTA) collects clinical data on patients undergoing therapeutic apheresis procedures throughout the national territory, with the main objective of improving the quality and safety of the care provided to the patient. Given the importance of centralizing the collection and analysis of information on therapeutic apheresis, the National Blood Center (NBC), at the request of the Italian Scientific Society of Hemapheresis and Cellular Manipulation (SIdEM), has included IRTA in the Information System of Transfusion Services (SISTRA), which is the inform
