Cerebral blood flow velocity in preterm neonates.

The postnatal changes of cerebral blood flow velocity in 35 preterm neonates with or without complications were measured with a bidirectional Doppler flow meter. In the cases without complications, the pulsatility index for the anterior cerebral artery (ACA-PI) was high shortly after birth, and gradually decreased after 6 hrs as that in normal term neonates. However ACA-PI showed large variations in the cases with respiratory distress. On the other hand, ACA-PI in the cases with subependymal hemorrhage (SEH) was low during the first 6 hrs after birth, and thereafter showed no significant chang

Cerebral blood flow velocity underestimates cerebral blood flow during modest hypercapnia and hypocapnia.

To establish the accuracy of transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) measures of middle cerebral artery (MCA) cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) as a surrogate of cerebral blood flow (CBF) during hypercapnia (HC) and hypocapnia (HO), we examined whether the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the MCA changed during HC or HO and whether TCD-based estimates of CBFV were equivalent to estimates from phase contrast (PC) magnetic resonance imaging. MCA CSA was measured from 3T magnetic resonance images during baseline, HO (hyperventilation at 30 breaths/min), and HC (6% carbon dioxide). PC and TCD measure

Placental Blood-Flow Velocity Quantification From Diffusion MRI.

PURPOSE: Altered placental capillary blood flow is closely linked to obstetric complications, yet quantifying capillary-scale blood velocity remains challenging with existing imaging methods. This is partially because capillary networks form disordered microvascular beds at the voxel scale, rather than coherent, directional vessels. Here, we combine Monte Carlo (MC) simulations with machine learning to estimate placental capillary blood velocity directly from diffusion MRI (dMRI) data. METHODS: MC simulations incorporating perfusion and diffusion were performed to generate signal dictionaries

Pulmonary vein blood flow velocity in pulsus paradoxus.

The effect of inspiration on pulmonary vein blood flow velocity and forward pressure gradient from pulmonary vein to left atrium was studied in seven patients with chronic constrictive pericarditis, five of whom had clinically obvious pulsus paradoxus. Compared to patients without pericardial disease, where inspiration produced no change, patients with pericardial disease showed an inspiratory fall in the forward pressure gradient and forward blood flow velocity in the pulmonary veins on inspiration. The mechanism of pulsus paradoxus in these patients can be explained by incomplete transmissio

Carotid artery blood flow and middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity during physical exercise.

Factors controlling cerebral blood flow (CBF) during exercise are complex and incompletely known. Different techniques have shown partly contradictory results of changes in regional and global cerebral perfusion during dynamic exercise in healthy subjects. To elucidate the global CBF response to supine stepwise increasing physical exercise, we measured blood flow in the left common carotid artery (QCCA) and the left internal carotid artery (QICA) simultaneously with the blood flow velocity in the ipsilateral middle cerebral artery (VMCA) using duplex ultrasonography and transcranial Doppler ul

Ocular blood flow velocity reduction after buckling surgery.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that scleral buckling reduces the blood flow velocity in retinal vessels. Blood flow changes may also appear in other ocular and extraocular vessels. This study describes the blood flow velocity changes in the ophthalmic artery (OA) after performing this procedure. METHODS: The study was carried out in 12 patients (12 eyes) with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Color Doppler imaging was used to measure the peak and average blood flow velocity in the OA. Measurements were taken 1 day before and 2 days after scleral buckling surgery was performed. Intraocular

Blood flow velocity in cutaneous lesions of leprosy.

The velocity of blood flow in the cutaneous lesions of leprosy was measured by the noninvasive technique of laser-Doppler velocimetry in nine male patients, all under treatment with World Health Organization multidrug regimens. In three patients with stable borderline tuberculoid (BT) lesions, the blood-flow velocity was slightly faster over the lesion than that in adjacent uninvolved skin. There was no substantial difference between different sites at the center and edge of individual lesions in each patient, but there was some variation between subjects. In one other BT patient with a revers

Physical exercise increases middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity.

The effect on the middle cerebral artery blood flow velocity (VMCA) of moderate and hard physical exercise on an ergometer cycle was examined in 10 healthy volunteers using transcranial Doppler sonography (TCD). During exercise, the heart rate increased by 136% and the systolic blood pressure by 37% (mean values). During initial moderate exercise, VMCA increased by 51%; in a following period of maximal physical work, VMCA decreased again by 20% in 9 of 10 volunteers although the heart rate continued to increase by 10% and the systolic blood pressure by 5% (mean values). Constriction of the MCA

Fetal cerebral blood flow velocity during labour. Preliminary report.

The authors have tried to ascertain in a preliminary study if monitoring of fetal cerebral blood flow velocity during labour could identify a situation threatening the fetal brain, which could justify a compulsory fetal extraction. Nine patients were explored at term during labour. The Doppler signal was recorded using the abdominal route at the level of the fetal internal carotid. The diastolic carotid index was used (DCI = D/S). In 5 cases, fetal heart rate (FHR) was normal during labour and the DCI was on average comparable for each of the patients and the mean DCI (20.1 +/- 1%) was in clos

Severe birth asphyxia and abnormal cerebral blood-flow velocity.

Thirty-four fullterm infants with postasphyxial encephalopathy (PAE) were studied with ultrasound to assess cerebral blood-flow velocity (CBFV). A control group of 126 healthy infants also had CBFV recordings during the first week of life. Measurements for the majority of the asphyxiated group fell into two abnormal patterns in relation to the control group: four had low CBFV (less than 2 SD below the mean) and 17 had high CBFV (greater than or equal to 2 SD above the mean); all had severe PAE. Median age at the first high measurement was 26 hours. There were no statistically significant diffe

Ocular blood flow velocity in age-related macular degeneration.

BACKGROUND: Changes in the structure of the ocular blood vessels associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) have been described in some detail, but comparatively little is known of the concomitant circulatory changes. The goal of this study is to evaluate changes in the ocular circulation that may be associated with AMD. METHODS: Ocular blood flow velocities and vessel pulsatilities were measured in volunteers with and without AMD using a color Doppler imaging unit. Spectral analyses were recorded from the ophthalmic artery, central retinal artery and vein, the temporal and nasal

Developmental and physiologic changes in cerebral blood flow velocity.

Developmental change of mean blood flow velocity (MBFV) and resistance index of the basilar artery (BA), as well as the changes in MBFV of the BA and the middle cerebral artery (MCA) during sleep and hyperventilation, were studied using transcranial Doppler sonography in healthy Japanese subjects. The MBFV of the BA increased with age from infancy through early childhood, reaching the maximum (64.4 +/- 2.6 cm/s) at the age of 5 y, and then gradually decreased. MBFV ratio of MCA to BA was almost stable between 1.57 to 1.64 in all age groups. The resistance index of the BA showed a maximum value

Renal arterial blood flow velocity waveforms in pregnant women.

Seventy-two continuous-wave Doppler ultrasonographic examinations were performed on nine nonpregnant and 56 normal pregnant women. The range of gestation was 6 to 40 weeks, and the objective was to record the renal arterial blood flow velocity waveform. Acceleration time and systolic per diastolic ratio of renal arterial blood flow velocity waveforms were assessed. Of 72 examinations, 68 recordings were made of the left renal artery (94.4%) and 28 of the right renal artery (38.9%), respectively. There was no correlation between acceleration time and systolic per diastolic ratio and gestational

Does coronary flow reserve assessed by blood flow velocity analysis reflect absolute coronary flow reserve?

Doppler guidewire enables us to measure phasic coronary velocity and has been used for the measurement of coronary flow reserve (CFR). Although CFR is usually calculated by the quotient of peak flow velocity during papaverine infusion and flow velocity at rest, this assumption is true only if conduit vessel size is constant. To determine the accuracy of measurement of CFR using average peak velocity (APV) with Doppler guidewire, we investigated the influence of intracoronary papaverine on coronary flow velocity and coronary arterial diameter (CAD) and examined the correlation between CFR deriv

Cerebral blood flow velocities in an infant with moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease is a progressive cerebrovascular disorder with bilateral occlusion of the basal circulation and development of collateral blood supply. In a 6-month-old female with multifocal ischemic infarctions, transcranial pulsed Doppler sonography revealed extremely high and low cerebral blood flow velocities, dampened waveforms, reversed flow, and musical murmurs. Magnetic resonance angiography revealed different degrees of vascular stenosis and an abnormal collateral network. Moyamoya disease was confirmed by conventional angiography at the age of 10.5 months. Pulsed-wave transcranial
