High-throughput sequencing analysis of fungal and Botryosphaeriaceae communities in symptomatic and asymptomatic almond, avocado, and blueberry plants.

The Botryosphaeriaceae family comprises a large and diverse group of fungi that can behave as endophytes, saprophytes, or pathogens, causing dieback and canker diseases worldwide. These fungi can persist in asymptomatic plants, with symptoms often triggered under host stress. This study employed a high-throughput sequencing (HTS) metabarcoding approach to investigate Botryosphaeriaceae populations in symptomatic and asymptomatic almond, avocado and blueberry plants, and to assess other fungi that may act as disease triggers, symptom enhancers or potential biocontrol agents. Botryosphaeriaceae

Ethylene-releasing plant growth regulators promote ripening initiation by stimulating sugar, acid and anthocyanin metabolism in blueberry (Vaccinium ashei).

BACKGROUND: Fruit ripening is a coordinated process that leads to an increase in sugars, decrease in acids and accumulation of pigments. Blueberry fruit exhibit an atypical climacteric ripening behavior. These fruit display an increase in respiration and ethylene production during ripening, however ethylene synthesis is developmentally regulated. In this study, the effect of ethylene on blueberry fruit ripening was investigated via preharvest applications of ethylene-releasing plant growth regulators (PGRs), ethephon and 1-aminocyclopropane 1-carboxylic acid (ACC), in one southern highbush cul

Wildflower plantings adjacent to commercial highbush blueberry fields do not increase natural enemy populations or reduce Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae) populations.

Intensive agricultural production can reduce beneficial insects by limiting access to undisturbed habitat. Wildflower plantings are promoted as conservation strategies to support pollinators and natural enemies on farms, yet their effects on certain crop pests remain understudied. We evaluated whether wildflower plantings adjacent to highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fields increased natural enemy abundances and reduced Drosophila suzukii populations compared to fields without this practice. In 2019 and 2020, across 12 farms in Michigan representing 3 management types (conventional

Characterization of Tobacco Ringspot Virus and Its Nematode Vector, Xiphinema rivesi, Infecting Highbush Blueberry in Washington State.

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) plants showing stunting and severe defoliation were observed in an organic blueberry farm in eastern Washington state. Initially, leaves of affected blueberry plants showed crinkling and mottling, chlorotic spots, and red-colored rings with chlorotic centers. Subsequently, infected plants showed severe defoliation with overall decline within a few years. Symptomatic blueberry plants produced small berries of uneven size and poor ripening compared with berries of uniform ripening produced by healthy plants. Berries from symptomatic plants showed sign

Characterization of Novel Luteoviruses in Canadian Highbush Blueberries Using High-Throughput Sequencing.

The Fraser Valley of British Columbia, Canada is among the top ten blueberry producing regions globally. Viral diseases are established in the region and significantly reduce average yields. While testing for two viruses is routine, characterization of all the viruses present in the region is incomplete. We used high-throughput sequencing to obtain an unbiased overview of RNA viruses present in 97 plants collected across the region. In addition to known viruses, we identified four luteoviruses previously unidentified in the region. Two of them matched the blueberry virus L (BlVL) and blueberry

Evaluation of emergence traps for monitoring blueberry gall midge (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae) adults and within field distribution of midge infestation.

The blueberry gall midge, Dasineura oxycoccana (Johnson) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a key pest of rabbiteye blueberry, Vaccinium virgatum Aiton, in the southeastern United States, but it has not been studied extensively and little is known about its ecology and management. Studies were conducted to develop an improved method for monitoring D. oxycoccana adults and to determine the within-field distribution of infestation. Four emergence traps were evaluated in an organic rabbiteye blueberry planting for their effectiveness in capturing D. oxycoccana adults early in the season. These traps in

High-Resolution Community Profiling of Active Bacteria and Eukaryotes in Replant-Diseased Blueberry Farm Soils From New Jersey, USA.

Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fields can remain productive for decades. However, some older fields decline in plant health and exhibit lower yields. After re-planting with new stock, the yields continue to suffer. This condition is termed 'Replant Disease'. The causative agent(s) in replant disease in New Jersey blueberry fields are unknown. To assess if low- and high-yield blueberry farm soils from two separate farms contained different microbiomes, we coupled long-read bacterial and eukaryotic ribosomal rRNA operon sequencing using the Oxford Nanopore MinION with stable isotop

Novel epidermal-cortical pattern and root apical silencing of VcCPC promoter activity in Arabidopsis might suggest a joint contribution to hairless roots in blueberry.

BACKGROUND: Root hairs are specialized tubular extensions that play a pivotal role in nutrient absorption and plant-soil interactions. Typically, they originate from epidermal cells, which differentiate into either hair cells or non-hair cells. In blueberry (Vaccinium spp.), the roots are devoid of root hairs. To examine the mechanisms responsible for the hairless root phenotype, this study conducted anatomical and molecular biological investigations on the hairless roots of blueberry. RESULTS: The epidermal cells of blueberry roots exhibit uniformity in size and cross-sectional dimensions, w

Evaluating global Vaccinium germplasm for resistance against invasive Drosophila suzukii (Diptera: Drosophilidae).

Control of spotted-wing Drosophila, Drosophila suzukii, in small fruits emphasizes biological, cultural, and chemical approaches, whereas studies of host plant resistance as a form of genetic control are just getting underway. The identification of resistance patterns among genotypes of host plants whose fruit, leaves, roots, stems, or seeds are specifically targeted by an invasive pest is the first step in the development of an effective genetic control. Therefore, a detached fruit bioassay was developed to screen for D. suzukii oviposition and larval infestation within berries from 25 repres

Identification and functional characterization of the Aux/IAA gene VcIAA27 in blueberry.

Aux/IAA genes are an important class of players in diverse developmental processes in plants, which generally exert their functions through the auxin signaling pathway. Blueberry is an economically and nutritionally important berry-bearing crop. However, Aux/IAA genes remain unknown in blueberry. In the present study, an Aux/IAA gene (VcIAA27) was identified and characterized in blueberry, and it is most closely related to IAA27 in other plant species. Expression analysis indicated that VcIAA27 transcripts accumulate highly in shoot, flower and fruit. Interestingly, VcIAA27 was highly expresse

A blueberry-derived polysaccharide inhibits SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease and exhibits broad-spectrum anti-coronavirus activity.

Vaccinium corymbosum (blueberry) is widely regarded as a functional food, the antiviral potential of blueberry polysaccharides has not yet been explored. In this study, a polysaccharide fraction designated 2B4 was isolated from blueberry fruits, and its potential inhibitory activity against the SARS-CoV-2 papain-like protease (PLpro)-a key enzyme involved in viral replication and immune evasion-was examined in detail. Chemical analysis and spectrum analysis results showed that 2B4 is a heterogeneous polysaccharide with an average molecular weight of 54.074 kDa, can be characterised as an acidi

Effect of Intermittent Warming on the Quality and Lipid Metabolism of Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L., cv. Duke) Fruit.

The change of lipid metabolism is a key point of blueberry fruit after refrigeration. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of intermittent warming (IW) of "DuKe" blueberry fruit on its shelf life at 20 ± 0.5°C following 30 days of refrigeration. IW-treated fruit showed higher contents of phosphatidylcholine, linoleic acid, and oleic acid but lower contents of phosphatidic acid and palmitic acid compared to controls. Protective effects on the cell membrane were also reflected as inhibition of the activity of phospholipase D and lipoxygenase. The blueberry fruit showed a lower decay

Vitamin C deficiency in growing willow ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus lagopus).

Willow ptarmigan chicks raised on a diet containing 265 mg ascorbic acid/kg develop scury-like symptoms and die by 4 weeks of age. If blueberry plants are given as an ad libitum supplement to this diet, the malady is prevented. We have described the clinical, pathological and histological changes which accompany this malnutrition and conclude that they are in accord with the description of scurvy in guinea pig and man. Biochemical determination of ascorbic acid synthesis in the kidney of ptarmigan chicks indicated a rate of synthesis five times that found in livers of growing white rats. Blueb

Regulatory mechanisms and multidimensional applications of blueberry anthocyanins: a review of current gaps and future directions.

Blueberries are among the richest fruit sources of anthocyanins, which contribute significantly to fruit quality, flavor, and plant physiology. Anthocyanins also exhibit various health-promoting effects, making them valuable in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Although the structures of anthocyanins and the general framework of their biosynthesis have been largely elucidated, the precise regulatory mechanisms governing anthocyanin production in blueberries remain incompletely understood. Here, we analyze recent advances in understanding blueberry anthocyanin regulation at the

Effects of a microbial treatment of Lactobacillus casei, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Lactobacillus plantarum on blueberry fruit quality, rhizosphere soil properties, and bacterial communities.

INTRODUCTION: Microbial amendments are increasingly used in sustainable crop production, but it remains unclear whether their application is accompanied by coordinated changes in fruit traits, rhizosphere soil conditions, and resident bacterial communities in blueberry cultivation. This study examined whether microbial culture treatment was associated with concurrent changes in blueberry fruit performance, rhizosphere soil chemical properties, and bacterial community characteristics. METHODS: Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L. cv. Duke) plants receiving no microbial treatment (NT) we
