Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an obsessive-compulsive disorder-related psychiatric condition characterized by an intense preoccupation with perceived physical flaws that are not observable by others. BDD affects ~2% of the adult population but is underdiagnosed, partly owing to limited clinician awareness, and undertreated, partly due to limited access to treatment. Research on the aetiology of BDD is scarce but likely involves an interplay between genetic and environmental factors. A few studies suggest functional and structural brain differences (compared with controls) in the regions in

Body dysmorphic disorder is defined by a preoccupation of one or more non-existent or slight defects or flaws in the physical appearance. The prevalence is 1.7-2.4% in the general population with a higher incidence rate in women. The rate of suicidal ideation is as high as 80%, and up to 25% of the patients attempt to commit suicide. Comorbidities, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, and anxiety, are frequent. These patients may seek cosmetic or dermatologic rather than psychological treatment. In the view of the high prevalence and risk of suicide, recognizing this disorder is

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a relatively common disorder with a point prevalence of 0.7-2.4 %. BDD is characterized by the patient's excessive concern with an imagined or slight defect in physical appearance. BDD usually begins in adolescence. Comorbidity rates and also suicidality rates are high. The course of BDD tends to be chronic. According to the present state of knowledge, cognitive-behavioral therapy and pharmacotherapy with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are valuable options in the therapy of BDD. The case report describes a recent case of BDD with typical clinical and

BACKGROUND: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a syndrome characterized by distress secondary to imagined or minor defects in one's appearance. Although it is a psychiatric disorder, most affected patients present to the dermatologist or plastic surgeon to improve their perceived defect.
OBJECTIVE: The objective was to review the literature on BDD, examining the epidemiology, etiology, clinical features, diagnostic criteria, and treatment of the disorder.
METHODS: Three representative cases of BDD are presented; in addition, a search of MEDLINE was completed and a review of all published data

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has both psychotic and nonpsychotic variants, which are classified as separate disorders in DSM-IV (delusional disorder and a somatoform disorder). Despite their separate classification, available evidence indicates that BDD's delusional and nondelusional forms have many similarities (although the delusional variant appears more severe), suggesting that they may actually be the same disorder, characterized by a spectrum of insight. And contrary to what might be expected, BDD's delusional form, although classified as a psychotic disorder, appears to respond to ser

Tanning in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) has not previously been studied. In this study, 200 subjects with BDD were evaluated with measures to examine the prevalence of BDD-related tanning--i.e., darkening one's skin color by direct exposure to sunlight or artificial light which is motivated by a desire to improve a perceived appearance defect (i.e., a BDD concern). We also examined clinical characteristics of individuals who engaged in BDD-related tanning. 25% (95% CI, 19.0%-31.0%) of subjects reported BDD-related tanning. Among tanners, the skin was the most common body area of concern (84.

This article reviews the historical and terminological origins of dysmorphophobia from Herodotus to today. It explains the differences pointed out by many authors, including the DSM-III-R, between body dismorphic disorder and delusional disorder somatic type, which are referred to as monosymptomatic hypochondriacal psychoses in Europe. Epidemiological data, clinical characteristics and outcome are discussed. Explicative theories and neurobiological, developmental and analytical aspects of body image are presented. The association between body dismorphic disorder and other disorders is analyzed

This study presents the cases of anorexia nervosa which began with a body dysmorphic disorder lasting for at least 6 months. In some subjects (25%) there was comorbidity of 3 mental disorders: anancastic personality or obsessive-compulsive disorder + dysmorphophobia + anorexia nervosa or dysmorphophobia + anorexia nervosa + depressive disorder (dysthymia or major depression). The author considers the conception that in some cases dysmorphophobia and anorexia nervosa are a spectre of obsessive-compulsive disorder or affective disorders in adolescents.

“Mr. H,” a 33-year-old single white male, presented with preoccupations focused on his “thinning” hair, facial “acne,” and “short” fingers. He began to worry excessively about his appearance at age 15, focusing at that time on his “pale” skin and “uneven” cheekbones. Mr. H described his appearance preoccupations as “severely upsetting,” but he was too embarrassed to reveal them to family or friends. Even though he looked normal to others, Mr. H was “100% convinced” that these body areas appeared “abnormal and deformed,” although in the past he had sometimes thought that “maybe I don't look so

This article reviews diagnostic issues about body dysmorphic disorder and discusses its relationship to other disorders. Diagnostic and symptomatic overlap with obsessive-compulsive disorder is explored; associated features, course of illness, presumed etiology, and treatment outcome are compared; and similarities and differences are reviewed. Other illnesses with similar features, such as anorexia nervosa, social phobia, and the disorders associated with cosmetic surgery are mentioned. These findings are discussed in light of the development of DSM-IV diagnostic criteria.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gazing rituals and selective attention to perceived flaws during gazing are considered as maintaining factors in cognitive-behavioral models for body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). This study investigated different durations of BDD-like gazing at different facial stimuli (an unfamiliar face, the participant's own face, and the participant's own reflection in the mirror) with regard to effects on dissociation, attractiveness evaluations and perceptual uncertainty. The aim of this study was to examine the hypothesized causal effects of gazing rituals on appearance preoccup

There is growing evidence that the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is significantly higher in specially selected populations as compared to the general population. The goal of the current study was to evaluate prevalence of BDD in Turkish patients with mild acne presenting to a dermatologist for treatment. This study was the first empirical investigation of BDD in acne patients in Turkey. One hundred fifty-nine outpatients diagnosed with acne who consulted to the dermatology clinic were included in the study. The diagnosis of BDD was based on DSM-IV criteria and the Structured Cli

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to define the main demographic and clinical characteristics of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) and subclinical BDD (sBDD) in a sample derived by a screening survey done on a population of individuals referring to aesthetical medicine centers.
METHOD: 487 subjects referring to hospital centers for aesthetical medicine were administered the SCID-I and the Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale adapted for BDD (BDD-YBOCS). The sample was thus sub-divided in three sub-samples: 1) BDD, 2) sub-clinical BDD, and 3) controls. The main demographic and clinical variab

Body dysmorphic disorder is a challenging disorder that manifests as erroneously perceived flaws in one's physical appearance and repetitive behaviors in response to appearance concerns. This disorder is also frequently comorbid with other psychiatric disorders, including major depressive disorder and autism spectrum disorder. It is currently understood to arise from a combination of biological, psychological, and environmental factors. Treatment of body dysmorphic disorder typically consists of a combination of pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. However, not all patients respon

Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is an obsessive-compulsive and related disorder that pushes people toward perfection, affecting 5 to 7.5 million people in the US. Individuals with BDD spend a great deal of time focusing on perceived flaws and ways in which to hide these flaws. The time spent on these negative thoughts can interfere with quality of life and the ability to carry out daily tasks. This article discusses BDD, including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment, complications, and the nurse's role.

Body dysmorphic disorder is an obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorder involving a perceived defect in physical appearance that most commonly develops in early adolescence and causes significant functional impairment and suicidality at much higher rates than in affected adults. Patients may also present with subthreshold body dysmorphic disorder or obsessive concerns over a diagnosable dermatologic condition, both of which can present similarly to body dysmorphic disorder. Pediatric dermatologists can play an important role in detecting body dysmorphic disorder and body dysmorphic disorder-like

The desire for self-mutilation in the absence of any discernible psychopathology is relatively rare. Self-mutilation is most commonly a manifestation of an underlying psychopathology such as depression, schizophrenia, personality disorder, transexuality, body dysmorphic disorder and factitious disorder. In this article, a case in which a 29-year-old single Kenyan lady of African origin demanded a surgical operation to modify and reduce the size of her external genitalia is presented. Although female genital mutilation is still widespread in the country, this case is of interest in that the wom

Gender differences in body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) have received little investigation. This study assessed gender differences in 188 subjects with BDD who were evaluated with instruments to assess demographic characteristics, clinical features of BDD, treatment history, and comorbid Axis I disorders. Ninety-three (49%) subjects were women, and 95 (51%) were men. Men and women did not significantly differ in terms of most variables examined, including rates of major depression, although women were more likely to be preoccupied with their hips and their weight, pick their skin and camouflage w
