Body fat distribution influences ART outcomes.

Body mass index (BMI) is the widely used method to evaluate obesity, but it cannot differentiate lean from fat mass neither mass distribution. Other methods have been proposed for this evaluation, as waist and hip circumferences (WC, HC) and ratio (WHR) and body fat analysis by bioimpedance (BF%), but they have not been applied to evaluate assisted reproduction (ART) outcomes. The present study aims at determining whether body composition and adipose tissue distribution are better than BMI on ART outcomes. Analysis was performed through five anthropometric measurements of 788 women submitted t

Obesity, body fat distribution and eye diseases.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of obesity, a chronic disease, is increasing, and obesity is now considered a global epidemic. Eye diseases are also increasing worldwide and have serious repercussions on quality of life as well as increasingly high costs for the community. The relationships between obesity and ocular pathologies are not yet well clarified and are not pathologically homogeneous: they seem to be somehow linked to excess body fat, especially to the distribution of adipose tissue and its ectopic deposits. PURPOSE: Our objective was to examine the associations between obesity and anthr

Monogenic disorders of obesity and body fat distribution.

Recently, great progress has been made towards understanding the molecular basis of body fat regulation. Identification of mutations in several genes in spontaneous monogenic animal models of obesity and development of transgenic models have indicated the physiological roles of many genes in the regulation of body fat distribution. In humans, mutations in leptin, leptin receptor, prohormone convertase 1 (PC1), pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC), melanocortin 4-receptor (MC4-R), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) gamma2 genes have been described in patients with severe obesity. Body fat distribution, body composition, and respiratory function in elderly men.

BACKGROUND: Most population studies have reported weak or nonsignificant associations between body mass index (BMI; in kg/m2) and lung function. OBJECTIVE: This study focused on the distinct effects of fat distribution and body composition on lung function and examined these relations in elderly men. DESIGN: The study was a cross-sectional evaluation of 2744 men aged 60-79 y who were free of cardiovascular disease and cancer and were drawn from general practices in 24 British towns. Anthropometric and body-composition [including fat mass (FM), fat-free mass (FFM), and percentage body fat (%B

MR-based assessment of body fat distribution and characteristics.

The assessment of body fat distribution and characteristics using magnetic resonance (MR) methods has recently gained significant attention as it further extends our pathophysiological understanding of diseases including obesity, metabolic syndrome, or type 2 diabetes mellitus, and allows more detailed insights into treatment response and effects of lifestyle interventions. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to review the current literature on MR-based assessment of body fat distribution and characteristics. PubMed search was performed to identify relevant studies on the assessment of bo

Body fat distribution in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate body fat distribution in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). METHODS: Body weight, body mass index (BMI), and six indices of body fat measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry were compared in 40 women with PCOS and 97 age-matched controls. The possible correlations between the body fat characteristics and serum androgen levels were evaluated in the 40 PCOS women. Body fat distribution was classified into upper- (N = 24) and lower-half body type (N = 16), and androgen levels and the incidence of hirsutism were compared in the two types. RESULTS: The BMI,

Body fat distribution as a risk factor for cerebrovascular disease: an MRI-based body fat quantification study.

BACKGROUND: While adiposity is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the association between adiposity and cerebrovascular disease is not entirely understood. For example, common methods to quantify body fat volume such as body mass index, waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are not suitable to identify the complex distribution patterns of body fat and its relation to cerebrovascular pathology. In view of a better understanding of the association between fat distribution and cerebrovascular disorders, the aim of the study was to perform measurements of body fat dist

Anorexia nervosa and body fat distribution: a systematic review.

The aim of this paper was to conduct a systematic review of body fat distribution before and after partial and complete weight restoration in individuals with anorexia nervosa. Literature searches, study selection, method development and quality appraisal were performed independently by two authors, and data was synthesized using a narrative approach. Twenty studies met the inclusion criteria and were consequently analyzed. The review had five main findings. First, during anorexia nervosa adolescent females lose more central body fat, while adult females more peripheral fat. Second, partial we

Sonographic subcutaneous and visceral fat indices represent the distribution of body fat volume.

BACKGROUND: A reliable method for direct measurement of both subcutaneous and visceral fat volume is the measurement of fat tissue area from tomographic pictures by CT or by MR imaging. However, these are not widely usable because of high cost and/or exposure to radiation. METHODS: We compared sonographic subcutaneous and visceral fat indices with fat distribution by serial-slice MR imaging in 17 subjects. Sonographic subcutaneous or visceral fat index is standardized thickness of subcutaneous fat tissue or the intra-abdominal depth at the level of umbilicus by height. RESULTS: Sonographic v

Androgens and the Regulation of Adiposity and Body Fat Distribution in Humans.

The sexual dimorphism in human body fat distribution suggests a causal role for sex hormones. This is of particular importance when considering the role of excess visceral adipose tissue accumulation as a critical determinant of obesity-related cardiometabolic alterations. Scientific literature on the modulation of body fat distribution by androgens in humans is abundant, remarkably inconsistent and difficult to summarize. We reviewed relevant literature on this topic, with a particular emphasis on androgen replacement, androgen effects on selected parameters of adipose tissue function and adi

Relation of body fat distribution to metabolic complications of obesity.

The importance of body fat distribution as a predictor of metabolic aberrations was evaluated in 9 nonobese and 25 obese, apparently healthy women. Plasma glucose and insulin levels during oral glucose loading were significantly higher in women with predominantly upper body segment obesity than in women with lower body segment obesity. Of the former group, 10 of 16 subjects had diabetic glucose tolerance results, while none of the latter group was diabetic. Fasting plasma triglyceride levels were also significantly higher in the upper body segment obese women. The site of adiposity in the uppe

Body fat distribution and metabolic consequences - Examination opportunities in dogs.

The relationship between metabolic disorders and the distribution of fat in different body regions is not clearly understood in humans. The aim of this study was to develop a suitable method for assessing the regional distribution of fat deposits and their metabolic effects in dogs. Twenty-five dogs were subjected to computed tomographic (CT) imaging and blood sampling in order to characterise their metabolic status. The different fat areas were measured on a cross-sectional scan, and the animals' metabolic status was evaluated by measuring fasting glucose, insulin and leptin levels. The volum

Migraine, obesity and body fat distribution - a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Obesity has been linked to an increased prevalence of migraine, and to increased migraine attack frequency, but several questions are left unanswered by previous studies. We examined the relationship between obesity and headache in a large, population-based study where we could take into account body fat distribution, migraine subtypes and tension-type headache. METHODS: The third population-based Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT3) included validated headache questionnaires and objective anthropometric measurements. Using a cross-sectional design, our sample consisted of 18,191 w

Disorders of body fat distribution in HIV-1-infected patients.

Body fat disorders are a common and relevant problem in HIV-1-infected patients that can be associated with metabolic alterations. Many controversies in their definition, pathogenesis, measurement, and management remain unclear. Several factors including HIV-1 infection itself and antiretroviral therapy have been associated with the development of these alterations. Most studies show that the action of drugs on the pathogenesis of lipoatrophy is undeniable. However, they also show that there are considerable differences not only between the different families of antiretroviral drugs, but also

Capsaicin-sensitive intestinal mucosal afferent mechanism and body fat distribution.

This report summarizes clinical and experimental data in support of the hypothesis that capsaicin-sensitive intestinal mucosal afferent mechanism plays a role in regulating body fat distribution. Epidemiological data have revealed that the consumption of foods containing capsaicin is associated with a lower prevalence of obesity. Rural Thai people consume diets containing 0.014% capsaicin. Rodents fed a diet containing 0.014% capsaicin showed no change in caloric intake but a significant 24% and 29% reduction in the visceral (peri-renal) fat weight. Increase in intestinal blood flow facilitate

Relationships between tamoxifen use, liver fat and body fat distribution in women with breast cancer.

Tamoxifen is a nonsteroidal anti-estrogenic drug used for adjuvant treatment of breast cancer and recently as a chemopreventative agent for breast cancer and, on an investigational basis, for other cancers. To date there are case reports of hypertriglyceridemia and fatty liver disease in tamoxifen users. Fatty liver is associated with visceral obesity and other components of the metabolic syndrome. Here we evaluated steatosis and adipose tissue distribution by CT scan in a cross-sectional study of 32 women on tamoxifen and 39 control women. Tamoxifen users had more visceral adipose tissue (VAT
