Tri-Ponderal Mass Index vs Body Mass Index in Estimating Body Fat During Adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: Body mass index (BMI) is used to diagnose obesity in adolescents worldwide, despite evidence that weight does not scale with height squared in adolescents. To account for this, health care providers diagnose obesity using BMI percentiles for each age (BMI z scores), but this does not ensure that BMI is accurate in adolescents. OBJECTIVE: To compare the accuracy of BMI vs other body fat indices of the form body mass divided by heightn in estimating body fat levels in adolescents. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Cross-sectional data from the 1999 to 2006 US National Health and N

Body Mass Index and Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage: Decreasing Mortality with Increasing Body Mass Index.

BACKGROUND: Labeled the "obesity paradox," obesity has been shown to provide a survival advantage in coronary artery disease, stroke, and intracerebral hemorrhage. Studies on body mass index (BMI) in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) show conflicting results and none examined a North American population with long-term follow-up. METHODS: A total of 305 consecutive SAH patients (2002 to 2011) were retrospectively reviewed to collect demographics, BMI (kg/m(2)), comorbidities, Glascow Coma Scale, World Federation of Neurologic Surgeons Scale, aneurysm treatment, delayed cerebral ischemia

Beyond Body Mass Index: Body Roundness Index, Inflammation, and Death.

BACKGROUND: The body mass index (BMI) is widely used to assess obesity but fails to reflect fat distribution. The body roundness index (BRI) has been proposed as a better surrogate for central obesity, yet direct comparisons of their predictive power remain limited. METHODS: We analyzed 341 336 adults from the Taiwan MJ cohort, free of cardiovascular disease at baseline, with a mean follow-up of 19.1 years. Anthropometric, laboratory, and lifestyle data were analyzed to compare the predictive performance of BRI and BMI for all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Mediation analysis using CRP (

Body mass index and suicide.

It has been suggested that there is a connection between depression and an increased body mass index (BMI). As depression is related to suicide, a South Australian cohort study was performed to test whether a high BMI may also characterize victims of suicide. Body mass indexes from 100 consecutive cases of suicide (male-to-female ratio, 1:1) taken from the files of Forensic Science South Australia in Adelaide, Australia, were compared with BMIs from 100 sex- and age-matched control cases, where deaths were due to accidents, homicides, or natural diseases. No significant differences in BMIs and

Body mass index and suicide methods.

Overweight and obesity is associated with lower rates of suicide. However, little is known about the association with different suicide methods. We studied the association between groups of body mass index and suicide methods. We identified all medicolegal autopsy cases with a cause of death due to external causes in Sweden during 1999-2013 (N = 39,368) and included 11,715 suicides and 13,316 accidents or homicides as controls. We applied multinomial regression models adjusted for age, sex, year and season of death. Obesity was associated with suicidal intoxication, OR 1.15 [95% confidence int

Body mass index in essential tremor.

BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of essential tremor (ET) is unknown, but it could be neurodegenerative. Weight loss has been observed in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. OBJECTIVES: To compare body mass index (BMI) (calculated as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters) in ET cases and controls and to determine whether BMI is correlated with tremor severity and duration. METHODS: Patients with ET were ascertained from the Neurological Institute of New York, New York, NY. Control subjects were recruited from 2 studies at the same institution. Height and weight were

Atopic disease and body mass index.

BACKGROUND: Obesity and atopy are two increasingly important population health issues. Excess weight and obesity are potential risk factors for atopy (specifically asthma). OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: To determine the body mass index (BMI) in children with atopic disease compared with nonatopic children, and to determine whether obesity is associated to more severe disease. Children aged 5 to 16 years with diagnosed atopic disease that attended the Ambulatory Hospital Center where eligible as cases. Children aged 5 to 16 years without atopic disease from a school in the same geographic area were u

The estimation of body mass index and physical attractiveness is dependent on the observer's own body mass index.

A disturbance in the evaluation of personal body mass and shape is a key feature of both anorexia and bulimia nervosa. However, it is uncertain whether overestimation is a causal factor in the development of these eating disorders or is merely a secondary effect of having a low body mass. Moreover, does this overestimation extend to the perception of other people's bodies? Since body mass is an important factor in the perception of physical attractiveness, we wanted to determine whether this putative overestimation of self body mass extended to include the perceived attractiveness of others. Patient perceptions of body mass index restrictions limiting fertility care for women with high body mass index.

RESEARCH QUESTION: What is the patient experience of women with high body mass index (BMI) with BMI restrictions that limit fertility care? DESIGN: Qualitative study using in-depth, semi-structured interview methodology. Interview transcripts were analysed for iterative themes in accordance with principles of grounded theory. RESULTS: Forty women with a BMI of 35 kg/m2 or higher with scheduled or completed appointment at the Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) clinic completed an interview. Most participants experienced BMI restrictions as unjust. Many perceived that BMI restric

Pancreatic beta cell/islet mass and body mass index.

Body mass index (BMI) is widely used to define obesity. In studies of pancreatic beta-cell/islet mass, BMI is also a common standard for matching control subjects in comparative studies along with age and sex, based on the existing dogma of their significant positive correlation reported in the literature. We aimed to test the feasibility of BMI and BSA to assess obesity and predict beta-cell/islet mass. We used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data that provided dual-energy Xray absorptiometry (DXA)-measured fat mass (percent body fat; %BF), BMI, and BSA for adult sub

Comparison of obesity and metabolic syndrome prevalence using fat mass index, body mass index and percentage body fat.

BACKGROUND: Accurate obesity classification is important so that appropriate intervention can be instituted to modify metabolic risk factors. Commonly utilized body mass index (BMI) and percentage body fat (PBF) are influenced by lean mass whereas fat mass index (FMI) measures only body fat. This study compares the prevalence of obesity and metabolic risk factors with FMI, BMI and PBF using DXA (dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry). METHODS: 489 women randomly recruited from the electoral roll were stratified into 4 age groups; 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and 70-79 years from 2000 to 2001. Clinical data

Association Between Prolactinoma and Body Mass Index.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity is increasing worldwide, and certain endocrine disorders may contribute to weight gain. While several studies have examined the association between weight gain and prolactinomas, the results are conflicting. Therefore, this study aimed to determine if body mass index (BMI) is higher among those with prolactinomas than those without. METHODS: We identified patients ≥18 years of age referred to an endocrine clinic between 2008 and 2018 with newly diagnosed prolactinomas. We extracted the relevant information, and comparative data was obtained from the 2015-2016 National Healt

Correlation Between Body Mass Index and Fibroadenoma.

Introduction Among all benign conditions, the fibroadenoma is the most common lesion worldwide as well as in Pakistan. Clinicians often face the dilemma of whether to remove the mass or to monitor it by means of periodic follow-up examinations. Although the removal of these lesions is a definitive solution, surgery may involve unnecessary excision of benign lesions and unbecoming cosmesis. Body mass index (BMI) is a known risk factor for the development of breast cancer. However, the relationship between BMI and benign breast diseases is still unclear. Some studies showed that increased BMI is

Body mass index in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders are associated with overweight/obesity. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may be an exception, as anecdotal evidence suggests lower BMI in OCD. Additionally, depression is associated with elevated BMI, but effects of comorbid secondary depression are unknown. The aim of the present study was to assess BMI and risk for overweight/obesity in OCD and to assess the effect of comorbid depression on BMI. METHODS: BMI, demographics, and clinical status were assessed in large samples of individuals with OCD, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, comorbid anxiety
