Body image, regret, and satisfaction following colpocleisis.

OBJECTIVE: Colpocleisis is a definitive surgical treatment for prolapse resulting in vaginal obliteration. We sought to evaluate body image, regret, satisfaction, and pelvic floor symptoms following this procedure. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective multicenter study through the Fellows' Pelvic Research Network. All women electing colpocleisis for management of pelvic organ prolapse were screened for enrollment. The Pelvic Floor Impact Questionnaire, Pelvic Floor Distress Inventory, and the modified Body Image Scale (BIS) were completed preoperatively and 6 weeks following surgery. Addition

Demographic predictors of body image satisfaction: The U.S. Body Project I.

We examined how gender, body mass, race, age, and sexual orientation were linked to appearance evaluation, overweight preoccupation, and body image-related quality of life among 11,620 adults recruited via Mechanical Turk. Men were less likely than women to report low appearance evaluation, high overweight preoccupation, negative effects of body image on their quality of life, being on a weight-loss diet, and trying to lose weight with crash diets/fasting. Racial differences were generally small, but greater appearance evaluation was reported by Black men versus other groups and Black women ve

Exploring the Relationship Between Autistic Traits and Body Image, Body Satisfaction, and Body Competence.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have been linked to bodily disorders (anorexia nervosa, obesity), and individuals with ASD are known to experience unique bodily states (e.g., exaggerated interoceptive sensitivity). Though there is evidence to suggest body variables may significantly impact quality of life in those with ASD, research has yet to examine the potential relationship between ASD and body image variables, that is, the evaluation of one's body. The present study examined 80 healthy college students (40 male, 40 female) who completed an online set of questionnaires regarding body image

Prospective relationships between skin color satisfaction, body satisfaction, and binge eating in Black girls.

Although it has been demonstrated that (a) body dissatisfaction and internalization of societal appearance standards contribute to disordered eating and (b) that internalization of societal appearance standards leads to decreased skin color satisfaction among Black women, it has not been established whether skin color dissatisfaction contributes to disordered eating among Black women or girls. The objective of the present study is to determine the influence of skin color satisfaction as a potential predictor for binge eating, and its effect through body image in Black girls during the vulnerab

Body Satisfaction and Physical Appearance in Gender Dysphoria.

Gender dysphoria (GD) is often accompanied by dissatisfaction with physical appearance and body image problems. The aim of this study was to compare body satisfaction with perceived appearance by others in various GD subgroups. Data collection was part of the European Network for the Investigation of Gender Incongruence. Between 2007 and 2012, 660 adults who fulfilled the criteria of the DSM-IV gender identity disorder diagnosis (1.31:1 male-to-female [MtF]:female-to-male [FtM] ratio) were included into the study. Data were collected before the start of clinical gender-confirming interventions

Body shape satisfaction in female exercisers and nonexercisers.

Twenty-eight high frequency exercisers, twenty-six moderate frequency exercisers, and twenty nonexercisers were recruited to examine the relationship between exercise and body shape satisfaction in women. All subjects were within average body weight and body fat percentage, and those subjects who reported the clinical features of anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa were not included in the data analysis. Results showed that the high frequency exercisers had a significantly more negative view of their body shape than a group of moderate exercisers and nonexercisers. In addition, high freque

Body image distortions in bulimia nervosa: investigating body size overestimation and body size satisfaction by fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Body image distortion is a key symptom of eating disorders. In behavioral research two components of body image have been defined: attitudes towards the body and body size estimation. Only few fMRI-studies investigated the neural correlates of body image in bulimia; those are constrained by the lack of a direct distinction between these different body image components. METHODS: The present study investigates the neural correlates of two aspects of the body image using fMRI: satisfaction rating and size estimation of distorted own body photographs in bulimia nervosa patients (15) a

Ethnic differences in women's body satisfaction: an experimental investigation.

This investigation was conducted so that a clearer picture of the complex relationship between ethnicity and body satisfaction could be obtained. Although body satisfaction has recently been shown to be influenced by several factors, such as mood, no studies investigating the stability of body satisfaction (to date) have examined whether there are ethnic differences in how such factors influence body satisfaction. Eighty-four White women and 33 Black women (U.S. undergraduates) were given bogus positive or negative social feedback so that the effect of the feedback on their body satisfaction c

A network analysis of body satisfaction of people with gender dysphoria.

In gender dysphoria (GD), much of the experienced distress results from body dissatisfaction. The current study analyzed the configuration of body satisfaction in trans men and women using network analysis. In total, 485 individuals diagnosed with GD from four European countries, applying for medical treatment, filled out the Body Image Scale for Transsexuals. A six-factor model reflecting different body areas was confirmed via confirmatory factor analysis. A further configuration of body satisfaction was modelled using correlation network analysis techniques in R. Genital dissatisfaction show

Long-Term Satisfaction and Body Image After Contralateral Prophylactic Mastectomy.

BACKGROUND: Contralateral prophylactic mastectomy (CPM) rates have been increasing in the US, and although high levels of satisfaction with CPM have been reported, few studies have evaluated the long-term effects on body image, comparing CPM with breast-conserving surgery (BCS) and unilateral mastectomy (UM). METHODS: We analyzed responses from a survey of women with both a personal and family history of breast cancer who were enrolled in the Sister Study (n = 1176). Among women who underwent mastectomy, we examined satisfaction with the mastectomy decision, as well as variation in the use of

Somebody's Fetish: Self-Objectification and Body Satisfaction Among Consensual Sadomasochists.

Considering that sexuality scholars claim consensual sadomasochists experience sexual objectification differently from the general population (Califia, 1994 ; Connell, 2002 ; Nussbaum, 1995 ), this study explored self-objectification (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997 ) and body satisfaction among 121 self-identified consensual sadomasochists, 67 of whom also self-identified as women. Participants responded to an online survey and reported their self-objectification, self-surveillance, body shame, and body satisfaction measures, along with their body mass index (BMI) and identification as dominant,

Evaluation of postoperative satisfaction with rhinoseptoplasty in patients with symptoms of body dysmorphic disorder.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder among candidates for plastic surgery may vary from 6% to 54%. Some studies report discrete benefits with the surgical results, while others show symptomatic exacerbation. Some authors even affirm that body dysmorphic disorder would be a surgical contraindication, against others who suggest satisfactory results. OBJECTIVE: To describe the prevalence of body dysmorphic disorder in rhinoseptoplasty candidates and to compare outcomes among patients with and without body dysmorphic disorder symptoms. METHODS: Cohort study. Individuals ≥ 16

Changes in weight talk and links with body satisfaction across adolescence and young adulthood.

The purpose of this study was to illuminate the developmental trajectories of weight talk (i.e., encouragement to diet) from parents and romantic partners and the developmental timing of weight talk as a risk factor for body satisfaction across adolescence and young adulthood. Participants were 994 individuals (53.1 % female; 34.9 % White, 27.2 % Black, 20.9 % Asian, 11.7 % multiracial) enrolled in a longitudinal cohort study in the U.S. (T1 M age = 14.4 years; T3 M age = 27.6 years). Multilevel tobit regression was used to examine trajectories of weight talk across development. Time-varying e

Satisfaction with an In-House Nasal Foreign Body Removal Manikin: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Nasal foreign bodies can lead to life-threatening conditions. Hence, it is a necessity that physicians be well trained in the appropriate procedures for removal of nasal foreign bodies. However, training on real patients is not only unpractical it is also too dangerous, due to risk of foreign body aspiration during the procedure. Therefore, our goal was to construct a manikin, with a specific design, to serve all possible needs for training. METHODS: We developed an in-house manikin from 2 materials; these being flexible polyurethane foam and silicone. Silicone, which has elasti

Body image satisfaction and anxiety of a Turkish sample of university students with skin diseases.

The aim of this study was to evaluate perception of body image and anxiety of 221 university students presenting to the dermatology outpatient clinic with a skin disease and 205 students without skin disease. Analysis of anxiety and body image scores yielded differences by sex and age in both groups. The group with skin disease had lower scores on body image. Acne vulgaris seems to be the most disturbing among the skin diseases, and this was more prominent in younger patients.

Bias for the (un)attractive self: on the role of attention in causing body (dis)satisfaction.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction plays a key role in the maintenance of eating disorders, and selective attention might be crucial for the origin of body dissatisfaction. A. Jansen, C. Nederkoorn, and S. Mulkens (2005) showed that eating disorder patients attend relatively more to their own unattractive body parts, whereas healthy controls attend relatively more to their own attractive body parts. In 2 studies, we investigated whether this bias in selective attention is causal to body dissatisfaction and whether an experimentally induced bias for attractive body parts might lead to increased bo

Daily Body (Dis-)Satisfaction and Dietary Restriction in Women Across the Eating Disorder Spectrum.

OBJECTIVE: Body dissatisfaction is a key risk factor in eating disorder development: It is theorized to promote dietary restriction, thereby contributing to symptom onset. Evidence for this pathway primarily comes from cross-sectional or multi-wave questionnaire studies in bulimia nervosa (BN) and anorexia nervosa (AN). Fewer studies have tested day-to-day links between body dissatisfaction and dietary restriction, which would indicate their temporal relationships. Using a daily diary design, we examined prospective day-to-day associations between these two symptoms across four eating disorder
