Body image distortions in bulimia nervosa: investigating body size overestimation and body size satisfaction by fMRI.

BACKGROUND: Body image distortion is a key symptom of eating disorders. In behavioral research two components of body image have been defined: attitudes towards the body and body size estimation. Only few fMRI-studies investigated the neural correlates of body image in bulimia; those are constrained by the lack of a direct distinction between these different body image components. METHODS: The present study investigates the neural correlates of two aspects of the body image using fMRI: satisfaction rating and size estimation of distorted own body photographs in bulimia nervosa patients (15) a

Insight Into Body Size Evolution in Aves: Based on Some Body Size-Related Genes.

Birds exhibit remarkable variations in body size, making them an ideal group for the study of adaptive evolution. However, the genetic mechanisms underlying body size evolution in avian species remain inadequately understood. This study investigates the evolutionary patterns of avian body size by analyzing 15 body-size-related genes, including GHSR, IGF2BP1, and IGFBP7 from the growth hormone/insulin-like growth factor axis, EIF2AK3, GALNS, NCAPG, PLOD1, and PLAG1 associated with tall stature, and ACAN, OBSL1, and GRB10 associated with short stature, four genes previously reported in avian spe

Helminth parasite body size scaling with host species size.

Host and parasite body size frequently scale positively (often referred to as Harrison's rule), potentially as a result of fundamental constraints on large parasite species simply being morphologically incapable of infecting small host species, or through a variety of alternative proposed mechanisms. Regardless of mechanism, Harrison's rule does have some empirical support. Here, we leverage several trait databases and a large set of host-helminth parasite interactions to gauge support for Harrison's rule in parasitic helminths. We fit generalized additive models from both the host perspective

Evolutionary Strategies for Body Size.

Humans show marked variation in body size around the world, both within and among populations. At present, the tallest people in the world are from the Netherlands and the Balkan countries, while the shortest populations are central African Pygmies. There are genetic, genetic plasticity, developmental, and environmental bases for size variation in Homo sapiens from the recent past and the present. Early populations of Homo species also have shown considerable size variation. Populations from the present and the past are also marked by sexual dimorphism, which, itself, shows group variation. Insights into body size variation in cetaceans from the evolution of body-size-related genes.

BACKGROUND: Cetaceans exhibit an exceptionally wide range of body size, yet in this regard, their genetic basis remains poorly explored. In this study, 20 body-size-related genes for which duplication, mutation, or deficiency can cause body size change in mammals were chosen to preliminarily investigate the evolutionary mechanisms underlying the dramatic body size variation in cetaceans. RESULTS: We successfully sequenced 20 body-size-related genes in six representative species of cetaceans. A total of 46 codons from 10 genes were detected and determined to be under strong positive selection,

Perception of body size and body dissatisfaction in adults.

Self-perception of body size seems to be not always in line with clinical definitions of normal weight, overweight and obesity according to Word Health Organization classification. The effect of self-perception of body size disturbances and body dissatisfaction may be the development of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa or binge eating disorder-a major risk factor of obesity development. Therefore, the study aimed to assess separately the perception of weight status and body size as well as body dissatisfaction in adults with normal weight, overweight and obesity. The study included 7

Does size matter? Clinical applications of scaling cardiac size and function for body size.

Extensive evidence is available that cardiovascular structure and function, along with other biological properties that span the range of organism size and speciation, scale with body size. Although appreciation of such factors is commonplace in pediatrics, cardiovascular measurements in the adult population, with similarly wide variation in body size, are rarely corrected for body size. In this review, we describe the critical role of body size measurements in cardiovascular medicine. Using examples, we illustrate the confounding effects of body size. Current cardiovascular scaling practices

On body size of infected mice.

Coutinho et al.'s experimental observation reveals that infected mice gain higher body weight. A theoretical analysis is given to explain the phenomenon, the result agrees remarkably well with Coutinho et al.'s experimental data (Acta Tropica 101, 2007, pp. 15-24).

Bison body size and climate change.

The relationship between body size and temperature of mammals is poorly resolved, especially for large keystone species such as bison (Bison bison). Bison are well represented in the fossil record across North America, which provides an opportunity to relate body size to climate within a species. We measured the length of a leg bone (calcaneal tuber, DstL) in 849 specimens from 60 localities that were dated by stratigraphy and 14C decay. We estimated body mass (M) as M = (DstL/11.49)3. Average annual temperature was estimated from δ18O values in the ice cores from Greenland. Calcaneal tuber le

Explaining body size beliefs in anorexia.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive neuropsychiatry has had much success in providing theoretical models for the causal origins of many delusional beliefs. Recently, it has been suggested that some anorexia nervosa patients' beliefs about their own body size should be considered delusions. As such, it seems high time the methods of cognitive neuropsychiatry were turned to modelling the false body size beliefs of anorexics. METHODS: In this paper, I adopt an empiricist approach to modelling the causal origins of false body size beliefs in anorexia. Within the background of cognitive neuropsychiatry, empir

Body size and colorectal-cancer risk.

Individuals whose energy intake exceeds expenditure are at increased risk of colorectal cancer. To determine whether body-size measurements at different ages were risk factors for cancer of the colon-rectum, we carried out a hospital-based case-control study in 6 Italian areas, 2 of which were in the South. Interviews were conducted with 1,217 subjects of both genders with incident histologically confirmed cancer of the colon, 726 with cancer of the rectum, and 4,136 controls hospitalized for acute, non-neoplastic, non-digestive conditions. The questionnaire included information on sociodemogr

The flubbed body: Pathological body size representation in personal neglect.

Personal Neglect (PN) is a disorder in which patients fail to attend or explore the contralateral side of their body. An increasing number of studies have considered PN as a form of body representation disorder frequently observed following damage to parietal areas. The extent and the direction of the body misrepresentation is still unclear with recent studies suggesting a general reduction of contralesional hand size. However, little is known about the specificity of this representation and whether the misrepresentation also generalises to other body parts. We explored the features of the rep

Body size, body proportions, and mobility in the Tyrolean "Iceman".

Body mass and structural properties of the femoral and tibial midshafts of the "Iceman," a late Neolithic (5,200 BP) mummy found in the Tyrolean Alps, are determined from computed tomographic scans of his body, and compared with those of a sample of 139 males spanning the European early Upper Paleolithic through the Bronze Age. Two methods, based on femoral head breadth and estimated stature/bi-iliac (pelvic) breath, yield identical body-mass estimates of 61 kg for the Iceman. In combination with his estimated stature of 158 cm, this indicates a short but relatively wide or stocky body compare

Body size, body shape, and long bone strength in modern humans.

To identify behaviorally significant differences in bone structure it is first necessary to control for the effects of body size and body shape. Here the scaling of cross-sectional geometric properties of long bone diaphyses with different "size" measures (bone length, body mass, and the product of bone length and body mass) are compared in two modern human populations with very different body proportions: Pecos Pueblo Amerindians and East Africans. All five major long bones (excluding the fibula) were examined. Mechanical predictions are that cortical area (axial strength) should scale with b

The influence of personal BMI on body size estimations and sensitivity to body size change in anorexia spectrum disorders.

In this cross-sectional study, we investigated the influence of personal BMI on body size estimation in 42 women who have symptoms of anorexia (referred to henceforth as anorexia spectrum disorders, ANSD), and 100 healthy controls. Low BMI control participants over-estimate their size and high BMI controls under-estimate, a pattern which is predicted by a perceptual phenomenon called contraction bias. In addition, control participants' sensitivity to size change declines as their BMI increases as predicted by Weber's law. The responses of women with ANSD are very different. Low BMI participant

Brief Report: Body Image in Autism: Evidence from Body Size Estimation.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have difficulties with social interaction and communication. First-hand accounts written by individuals with ASD have shown the existence of other atypical characteristics such as difficulties with body awareness. However, few studies have examined whether such atypicalities are found more generally among individuals with ASD. We examined body image (i.e., self-body awareness) by asking individuals with ASD and typically developing (TD) individuals to estimate their own body size (shoulder width). Results show that TD individuals estimated their

Body-image disturbances in bulimia nervosa: influences of actual body size.

This study evaluated body-image distortion and ideal body-size preferences in 423 nonbulimic women and 108 bulimics. Analyses of covariance were utilized to compare the bulimic and nonbulimic groups on measures of current and ideal body size. Weight was used as a covariate to evaluate the influence of actual body size on perception of current body size and selection of ideal body size. Bulimics chose current body sizes that were significantly larger than those picked by nonbulimics regardless of actual body size. Bulimics also chose thinner ideal body sizes than did nonbulimics, regardless of

Perinatal liver sympathetic innervation governs body size.

Perinatal failure in the growth hormone (GH)-insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) axis causes impaired body growth and central and autonomous neurodevelopmental disorders. However, whether a primary neurodevelopmental disorder causes organ misinnervation as a contributing factor in growth retardation is elusive. To interrogate this, here we generated a late embryonic neural-specific cdc20 homolog 1 (Cdh1) knockout mouse model, which exhibited a primary delay in early postnatal brain development. These mice displayed an intact GH-releasing hormone (GHRH)-GH-hepatic GH receptor (GHR) pathway des

Pathways involved in pony body size development.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of body growth in mammals is poorly understood. Here, we investigated the regulatory networks involved in body growth through transcriptomic analysis of pituitary and epiphyseal tissues of smaller sized Debao ponies and Mongolian horses at the juvenile and adult stages. RESULTS: We found that growth hormone receptor (GHR) was expressed at low levels in long bones, although growth hormone (GH) was highly expressed in Debao ponies compared with Mongolian horses. Moreover, significant downregulated of the GHR pathway components m-RAS and ATF3 was found in juvenile ponie

Somatosensory cortical representation of the body size.

The knowledge of the size of our own body parts is essential for accurately moving in space and efficiently interact with objects. A distorted perceptual representation of the body size often represents a core diagnostic criterion for some psychopathological conditions. The metric representation of the body was shown to depend on somatosensory afferences: local deafferentation indeed causes a perceptual distortion of the size of the anesthetized body part. A specular effect can be induced by altering the cortical map of body parts in the primary somatosensory cortex. Indeed, the present study
