Body surface potential mapping (BSPM) is a noninvasive modality to assess cardiac bioelectric activity with a rich history of practical applications for both research and clinical investigation. BSPM provides comprehensive acquisition of bioelectric signals across the entire thorax, allowing for more complex and extensive analysis than the standard electrocardiogram (ECG). Despite its advantages, BSPM is not a common clinical tool. BSPM does, however, serve as a valuable research tool and as an input for other modes of analysis such as electrocardiographic imaging and, more recently, machine l

Techniques facilitating individual mapping and ablation of arrhythmogenic substrates are desired to enhance our understanding of persistent atrial fibrillation (persAF) mechanisms as a prerequisite to increasing the success rates of single procedure persAF catheter ablation. The technique of body surface potential mapping (BSM) involves the use of multiple electrodes to collect the potentials over a large body surface area and, with the use of a computed tomography scan, it facilitates their correlation to a 3D model of the atrial structures. During AF,the visualization and localization of AF

The electrophysiological signals recorded by cutaneous electrodes, known as body surface potentials (BSPs), are widely employed biomarkers in medical diagnosis. Despite their widespread application and success in detecting various conditions, the poor spatial resolution of traditional BSP measurements poses a limit to their diagnostic potential. Advancements in the field of bioelectronics have facilitated the creation of compact, high-quality, high-density recording arrays for cutaneous electrophysiology, allowing detailed spatial information acquisition as BSP maps (BSPMs). Currently, the des

BACKGROUND: Various ECG abnormalities are commonly observed in obesity and in metabolic syndrome.
SUMMARY: Some of these abnormalities are caused by the pushed-up position of the diaphragm due to obesity and others occur as a result of the complications of the condition. The position of the R wave may change, various arrhythmias may develop or the QT interval may be prolonged, which increases the tendency to malignant arrhythmias. In obesity, the ECG signs of ventricular hypertrophy are less informative due to the accumulation of epicardial and subcutaneous adipose tissue. In general, it can

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiographic imaging (ECGi) is a noninvasive technique for ventricular tachycardia ablation planning. However, it is limited to reconstructing epicardial surface activation. In silico pace mapping combines a personalized computational model with clinical electrocardiograms (ECGs) to generate a virtual 3-dimensional pace map.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the ability of ECGi and in silico pace mapping to determine the site of ventricular pacing.
METHODS: ECGi recordings were collected during left ventricular (endocardial: n=5; epicardial: n=1), septal

Using 49 capacitive-coupled electrodes, mattress-type harness was developed to obtain posterior body surface potential map (P-BSPM) in dressed individuals. The aim of this study was to investigate how valuable information P-BSPM could provide, especially in discrimination of old myocardial infarction (OMI). P-BSPM of 59 individuals were analyzed; 23 normal control, 11 right bundle branch block (RBBB), 3 left bundle branch block (LBBB) and 19 OMI patients. Principal component analysis and linear hyper-plane approach were used to evaluate diagnostic performance. The axes of P-BSPM vector potenti

Body Surface Potential Mapping is the spatial high-resolution acquisition of cardiac electrical activity from the thorax surface. The method is used to record more comprehensive cardiac information than conventional ECG measurement approaches. Although Body Surface Potential Mapping is well-known and is technically feasible, it is rarely used in clinical environments. One reason for this is the cumbersome procedure of a measurement. The placement of many adhesive gel electrodes and the contacting with many cables are particularly problematic. These limit both patients and medical staff. Theref

PURPOSE: Atrial tachycardia (AT), flutter (AFL) and fibrillation (AF) are very common cardiac arrhythmias and are driven by localized sources that can be ablation targets. Non-invasive body surface potential mapping (BSPM) can be useful for early diagnosis and ablation planning. We aimed to characterize and differentiate the arrhythmic mechanisms behind AT, AFL and AF from the BSPM perspective using basic features reflecting their electrophysiology.
METHODS: 19 simulations of 567-lead BSPMs were used to obtain dominant frequency (DF) maps and estimate the atrial driving frequencies using the

OBJECTIVES: Parameters of body surface potential mapping (BSPM) in DM II patients are significantly different comparing with healthy non-diabetic subjects. Hypothesis that these changes are more pronounced in DM II patients with depression was tested in the present study. For this purpose, analysis of the relationship between the Int-QRST (isointegral) maps distribution and the depressive symptoms intensification, as well interrelation between depressive and diabetic symptoms were performed.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: BSPM registrations were obtained from the three study groups (aged 37-52 years),

The accurate generation of forward models is an important element in general research in electrocardiography, and in particular for the techniques for ElectroCardioGraphic Imaging (ECGI). Recent research efforts have been devoted to the reliable and fast generation of forward models. However, these model can suffer from several sources of inaccuracy, which in turn can lead to considerable error in both the forward simulation of body surface potentials and even more so for ECGI solutions. In particular, the accurate localization of the heart within the torso is sensitive to movements due to res

Biventricular pacing (BVP) could be improved by identifying the patient-specific optimal electrode positions. Body surface potential map (BSPM) is a non-invasive technique for obtaining the electrophysiology and pathology of a patient. The study proposes the use of BSPM as input for an automated non-invasive strategy based on a personalized computer model of the heart, to identify the patient pathology and specific optimal treatment with BVP devices. The anatomy of a patient suffering from left bundle branch block and myocardial infarction is extracted from a series of MR data sets. The clinic

Gastrointestinal (GI) potential mapping could be useful for evaluating GI motility disorders. Such disorders are found in inflammatory bowel diseases, such as Crohn's disease, or GI functional disorders. GI potential mapping data originate from a mixture of several GI electrophysiological sources (termed ExG) and other noise sources, including the electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiration. Denoising and/or source separation techniques are required, however, with real measurements, no ground truth is available. In this paper we propose a framework for the simulation of body surface GI potential m

Cutaneous electrophysiology is a fundamental non-invasive technique for assessing electrically active organs such as the brain, heart, and muscles. Standard approaches, however, are limited in spatial resolution, reducing sensitivity to certain pathological features. The development of body surface potential mapping using electrode arrays has helped overcome these limitations, enhancing the diagnostic power of cutaneous recordings, yet clinical adoption remains constrained by challenges in electrode performance, wiring complexity, wearability, data transmission, and interpretability. Here, we

AIMS: Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC) is a progressive inherited cardiac disease. Early detection of disease and risk stratification remain challenging due to heterogeneous phenotypic expression. The standard configuration of the 12 lead electrocardiogram (ECG) might be insensitive to identify subtle ECG abnormalities. We hypothesized that body surface potential mapping (BSPM) may be more sensitive to detect subtle ECG abnormalities.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We obtained 67 electrode BSPM in plakophilin-2 (PKP2)-pathogenic variant carriers and control subjects. Subject-speci

BACKGROUND: Body surface potential mapping (BSPM) provides additional electrophysiological information that can be useful for the detection of cardiac diseases. Moreover, BSPMs are currently utilized in electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI) systems within clinical practice. Missing information due to noisy recordings, poor electrode contact is inevitable. In this study, we present an interpolation method that combines Laplacian minimization and principal component analysis (PCA) techniques for interpolating this missing information.
METHOD: The dataset used consisted of 117 lead BSPMs recorded

Bundle branch block (BBB) is a defect on the electrical conduction system of the heart diagnosed by analyzing electrocardiogram (ECG) morphology. Our study aims to determine whether mapping information, specifically QRS duration and observation data from maps obtained using body surface potential mapping (BSPM), can be helpful in BBB diagnosis. We studied 64-lead BSPM recordings of 18 BBB patients and 9 controls with normal ventricular conduction. QRS duration was measured from the BSPM information obtained. The BSPM maps were computed along the QRS complex for each individual and group, and m

In order to evaluate the spatial location of late potentials (LPs), we designed a new system for the body surface mapping of signal-averaged, filtered ECG using 45 thoracic unipolar leads (5 X 9 array). Signals from patients with old myocardial infarction (MI, N = 8), arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (N = 1) and dilated cardiomyopathy (N = 2) were amplified and passed through a digital bandpass filter (60-300Hz). Departure maps, LP isopotential maps, and LP30 area maps were generated and superimposed. The LP30 duration was determined as the section between the filtered QRS endpoints

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic variants in plakophilin-2 (PKP2) and phospholamban (PLN) are associated with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy. Early disease detection is important to prevent adverse events. Body surface potential mapping (BSPM) may detect local electrical abnormalities earlier than the 12-lead electrocardiogram.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine abnormalities in R-, S-, and T-wave amplitudes in PKP2- and PLN-pathogenic variant carriers using BSPM.
METHODS: 67 lead BSPM was performed in controls and PKP2 and PLN carriers. R-, S-, and T-wave amplitudes across all leads in controls
