Twenty-four women with primary and secondary amenorrhea were compared as to body weight, weight loss, estimated body fat content and loss, and history of failure to menstruate after discontinuing use of oral contraceptives. Simple weight loss is associated with menstrual dysfunction when over 30% of body fat is lost. Women using oral contraceptives who lose minor degrees of weight or body fat are at risk for the development of secondary amenorrhea.

BACKGROUND: Despite several decades of research, managing body weight remains an unsolved clinical problem. Health problems associated with dysregulated body weight, such as obesity and cachexia, exhibit several gut microbiota alterations. There is an increased interest in utilising the gut microbiota for body weight control, as it responds to intervention and plays an important role in energy extraction from food, as well as biotransformation of nutrients.
SCOPE OF THE REVIEW: This review provides an overview of the role of the gut microbiota in the physiological and metabolic alterations ob

The weight of body parts is largely hidden from conscious experience. People underestimate the weight of their limbs, whereas individuals in clinical populations often experience them as abnormally heavy. We argue that limb weight is a fundamental dimension of internal body representations and a conscious reflection of the functional state of sensorimotor processing.

Low body weight and rapid unintentional weight loss are highly predictive of mortality and morbidity in the elderly population. Weight loss is frequently reported in elderly patients. Acute and chronic diseases are leading causes of involuntary weight loss. Whereas physical disease probably accounts for a majority of cases of involuntary weight loss, psychiatric disorders such as dementia and depression also may result in severe nutritional deficiencies. Additional physiological, psychological, and social factors may affect food intake and body weight. Changes in body composition include loss

Maintenance of body weight is fundamental to maintain one's health and to promote longevity. Nevertheless, it appears that the global obesity epidemic is still constantly increasing. Endocannabinoids (eCBs) are lipid messengers that are involved in overall body weight control by interfering with manifold central and peripheral regulatory circuits that orchestrate energy homeostasis. Initially, blocking of eCB signaling by first generation cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1) inverse agonists such as rimonabant revealed body weight-reducing effects in laboratory animals and men. Unfortunately, rim

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to determine: 1) factors associated with body mass index (BMI) in women with bulimia nervosa prior to treatment; 2) changes in BMI during cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for bulimia nervosa; and 3) predictors of weight change during CBT treatment.
METHODS: Participants were 94 women with DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa enrolled in a randomized clinical trial of CBT. Eating disorder symptomatology, past and current psychopathology, and BMI were measured prior to treatment and after twelve weeks of treatment.
RESULTS: A significantly lower BMI prior t

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Indigenous children in Canada face higher rates of overweight and obesity compared to non-Indigenous children. Parents' perceptions of their child's body weight are shaped by broader systemic influences, including historical trauma and limited access to healthy food. This study aimed to evaluate the association between children's actual body weight (measured by BMI) and parental perceptions among First Nations children.
METHODS: Participants were children from two Saskatchewan First Nations communities involved in the First Nations Lung Health Project (2013 and 2017). S

PURPOSE: To estimate the time trend in the prevalence of suicidal behaviors including ideation and attempts in Chinese adolescents; to examine the association between suicidal behaviors and overweight (OW)/obesity (OB) and self-perceived weight status.
METHODS: Data from Youth Risk Behavior Surveys conducted in Ningbo in 2007, 2012, 2017 and 2022 were used for the study. A multistage sampling procedure was used to select respondents aged 12 to 19 years who participated in each survey. Repeated cross-sectional data of anthropometry, weight perception and suicidal behaviors were collected throu

Introduction: Abnormal body weight, including overweight and obesity, is a common health problem affecting children and adolescents. The present study aimed to analyse weight changes in children from preschool age to adolescence and to identify early predictors of excessive weight in adolescence, such as blood pressure and physical fitness observed in preschool children. Methodology: Data from 3075 children (1524 girls and 1594 boys), collected as part of the Gdańsk Centre for Health Promotion's "Your Child's Healthy Life" programme, were analysed, with each child assessed at ages 6, 10, and 1

BACKGROUND: The evidence regarding dementia and late-life weight change is inconsistent, and data on body weight fluctuation and dementia are limited.
OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that weight loss and substantial weight fluctuation predict cognitive decline independent of body weight and traditional risk factors of dementia.
METHODS: This study utilized longitudinal data from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center for 10,639 stroke- and dementia-free older adults (60.9%female, mean age 71.6 years, median follow-up 5.5 years). Trends in weight change and weight fluctuation were est

OBJECTIVE: During medical emergencies, underweight and obese children are at a higher risk of weight-estimation errors than 'average' children, which may lead to poorer outcomes. In obese children, optimum drug dosing requires a measure of both total body weight (TBW) and ideal body weight (IBW) for appropriate scaling. We evaluated the ability of the Broselow tape, the Mercy method and the PAWPER XL tape to estimate TBW and IBW in obese and underweight children.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: Data for children aged 0-18 years were extracted and pooled from three previous weight-estimation studies

Excess body weight (EBW) is the second most important and potentially modifiable risk factor of cancer in Germany. The longer and the more excess body weight a person has, the higher the cancer risk. About 60 % of adult Germans have EBW (BMI ≥ 25.0 kg/m²) and more than 23 % are obese (BMI ≥ 30.0 kg/m²). Excess body weight is causally associated with colorectal, esophageal (adenocarcinoma), gastric (cardia), pancreatic, biliary, hepatocellular, kidney, thyroid, breast (postmenopausal), endometrial and ovarian cancer as well as multiple myeloma and meningioma. In recent years, more and more youn

Extremes of body weight are not uncommon in the modern world and include anorexia nervosa (AN) and obesity. Both conditions are associated with increased morbidity and mortality: AN has the highest mortality rate of all mental illnesses and unfortunately obesity has reached epidemic proportions and is a well-recognized risk factor for cardiovascular disease including venous thromboembolism (VTE). This article summarizes the current understanding of hemostatic changes of these extremes of body weight. The hemostatic changes of AN have not been well described. Severe AN is associated with pancyt

Obesity is a leading preventable cause of death worldwide, with increasing prevalence in adults and children, and authorities view it as one of the most serious public health problems of the 21st century. Sixty-two percent of the Hungarian adult population has overweight and 27% is morbidly obese and, therefore, it is a significant interest to treat this condition. The authors review the diagnosis and the associated diseases of morbid obesity. The initial enthusiasm with the gastric band has settled now, as the long-term outcome showed only very limited reduction in the excess body weight and

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Given the high prevalence of obesity in the USA, much recent attention has focused on dietary strategies for weight control. Several medical and scientific societies currently recommend reducing consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs). However, the evidence base for a public health recommendation has been a topic of debate. The purpose of this review is not to underscore the debate but rather to consider how recently published data pertaining to SSBs contribute to the evidence base for preventing and treating obesity, with application to caring for patients.

With the advent of bariatric surgery, body contouring has grown to a new speciality in plastic surgery. Following massive weight loss, patients generally have skin redundancy on the trunk, buttocks, breast, upper arms, thighs and face, leading to a poor quality of life and social acceptance. This condition motivates many patients to consult a plastic surgeon to address these problems. Thus, plastic surgery has become an integral part of the surgical treatment of the morbidly obese. The aim of post-bariatric plastic surgery should be to restore a normal body image of the patient with as few sur

BACKGROUND: Obesity and its associated medical morbidities carry substantial health risk. While massive weight loss allows improvement in health status and lifestyle, physical sequelae due to symptomatic skin redundancy still require treatment. Areas affected include the arms, breasts, abdomen, back, and thighs. After open gastric bypass, patients often have poor abdominal support and incisional hernias. To completely address the treatment of patients following massive weight loss, body contouring procedures are performed, often in one stage and tailored to each patient, to rid the functional

Body composition changes in nine adults with hyperthyroidism were determined with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and computed tomography at diagnosis and after 3 and 12 months of euthyroidism achieved by surgery, antithyroid drugs, or treatment with radioiodine. Mean body weight was 67.6 kg at diagnosis and increased 2.7 kg (P=0.06) and 8.7 kg (P < 0.001) after 3 and 12 months of euthyroidism, respectively. Basal metabolic rate decreased from 2087 Cal/24 h at diagnosis to 1601 Cal/24 h at 12 months (P=0.001), whereas reported energy intake dropped from 3244 to 2436 Cal/24 h (P=0.01). Accordi

The onset and progression through the various stages of puberty are influenced by a number of factors (Fig. 2). In both animals and humans, the age of puberty appears to be related more to body weight than to chronologic age. Undernutrition and low body fat, or an altered ratio of lean mass to body fat, seem to delay the adolescent spurt and to retard the onset of menarche. According to Frisch, a minimum level of fatness (17% of body weight) is associated with menarche; however, a heavier minimum weight for height, representing an increased amount of body fat (22%), appears necessary for the o

Overweight and obesity are known risk factors for the development of lymphoedema, and are also well-recognised factors complicating the management of lymphoedema. However, a degree of uncertainty remains regarding the way in which obesity impacts upon the condition, and there is little detail about the practical application of weight management strategies in the population with lymphoedema. This article provides the background for ongoing research into the association between lymphoedema management and obesity. It is hoped that this research will provide important insights into the long-term m
