Unicameral, or solitary, bone cysts are unusual tumors seen in the ends of long bones in skeletally immature persons. The etiology of these lesions is poorly understood. Various hypotheses have included dysplastic processes, synovial cysts, and abnormalities in the local circulation. Most patients present with a nondisplaced pathologic fracture, but occasionally cysts are found incidentally. Plain radiographs typically show a symmetric lesion with cortical thinning and expansion of the cortical boundaries. Once diagnosed, unicameral bone cysts continue to be a treatment dilemma. An aneurysmal bone cyst is a tumor-simulating bone lesion, the etiology of which is still unclear and probably inhomogeneous. This type of lesion is mainly observed during the second decade of life and is rarely diagnosed beyond the age of 30 years. It is characterized by hollow spaces consisting of several compartments filled with blood and partially divided by septs consisting of spindle-cell tissue with ample multinuclear giant cells and frequent reactive new bone formation. The locations of preference are the metaphyses of the long bones, the spine and flat bones; however, they can appear

Fifty-eight cases of solitary bone cyst are reported. Clinical and radiological features and the results of surgical treatment are discussed. In the evolution of bone cysts and in particular those of the humerus two forms of the disease can occur; that of the metaphysis and that of the diaphysis with pecliar features and indications for treatment. Permanent repair of a cyst is possible only after internal reconstruction of the involved segment.

Since their original description by Virchow, simple bone cysts have been studied repeatedly. Although these defects are not true neoplasms, simple bone cysts may create major structural defects of the humerus, femur, and os calcis. They are commonly discovered incidentally when x-rays are taken for other reasons or on presentation due to a pathologic fracture. Various treatment strategies have been employed, but the only reliable predictor of success of any treatment strategy is the age of the patient; those being older than 10 years of age heal their cysts at a higher rate than those under ag

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign primary or secondary lesions that commonly arise in long bones and often before skeletal maturity. Little has been written about aneurysmal bone cysts that abut the physeal plate. The records of 15 patients with juxtaphyseal aneurysmal bone cysts were reviewed. Fourteen of the patients were referred with abnormal radiographs after evaluation for pain in the affected limb. One patient presented with abnormal radiographs after fracture about the aneurysmal bone cyst. None of the patients had evidence of growth plate disruption. The children's ages ranged from 2 t

AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyze the complications and outcomes of treatment in a series of previously untreated patients with a primary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) who had been treated by percutaneous sclerosant therapy using polidocanol.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2016, 56 patients were treated primarily with serial intralesional sclerosant injections. Their mean age was 20 years (1 to 54). The sites involved were clavicle (n = 3), humeri (n = 11), radius (n = 1), ulna (n = 3), hand (n = 2), pelvis (n = 12), femur (n = 7), tibia (n = 13), fibula (n = 3), and foot (n

Results of treatment of 7 cases of aneurysmal bone cysts and 12 cases of solitary bone cysts in 19 patients treated in our Department between 1991 and 1996 are presented. Changes were found in the humerus, femur, tibia and fibula. Curettage or excision was the mode of treatment. Recurrence of the condition has been noted in 4 cases. Excision of the change and filling of the defect with autologous or homologous bone graft is more efficient than curettage alone.

Simple and aneurysmal bone cysts are benign lytic bone lesions, usually encountered in children and adolescents. Simple bone cyst is a cystic, fluid-filled lesion, which may be unicameral (UBC) or partially separated. UBC can involve all bones, but usually the long bone metaphysis and otherwise primarily the proximal humerus and proximal femur. The classic aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an expansive and hemorrhagic tumor, usually showing characteristic translocation. About 30% of ABCs are secondary, without translocation; they occur in reaction to another, usually benign, bone lesion. ABCs are

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cysts are reported. Each patient presented with a palpable mass in the occipital region and signs of compression of structures in the posterior fossa. One of the cases is unique, in that the aneurysmal bone cyst was associated with an epidural hematoma in the posterior fossa. The pertinent literature is reviewed.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are unique pathologic entities that cause pain and local osseous destruction. Many surgical treatment modalities have been described. This article reports on the case of a 16-year-old high school athlete with left heel pain due to an aneurysmal bone cyst in the calcaneus. Curettage of the bone cyst was performed, and the void was filled with a commercially available mixture of cancellous bone and demineralized bone matrix. Early return to athletic activity was achieved, with no recurrence noted at 3-year follow-up.

In 1942, Jaffe and Lichtenstein introduced the term aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). Primary ABC is characterized by the presence of spongy or multi-cameral cystic tissue filled with blood. The process is benign, but it is locally destructive and has a high propensity for recurrence. In this paper, we present the third case of multiple metachronous primary ABCs as a rare variant of ABC. We describe the 10-year history of a 12-year-old boy with metachronous multiple primary ABCs at five different sites (right proximal humerus, right ulna, bilateral distal radius and right lateral clavicle). The zonography method is gaining more and more users today and arouses a definite interest of specialists in medicine. This is due to the peculiarities of the method and the tremendous clinical possibilities which make it possible to improve and accelerate the diagnosis not only of diseases of the lungs and kidneys, but also of some segments of the bone system. The availability of zonography allows it to be used successfully in the diagnosis of various, pathological among others, types of bone fractures, tumors of the skeleton and, therefore, makes it possible to watch the reparative manifesta

Etiology, clinical manifestations, roentgenographic appearance and histological variations of solitary and aneurysmatic bone cyst are reported. The classification of solitary bone cyst into active and inactive cysts is important therefore prognosis and treatment are different. The critical control of our patients with fractured solitary and aneurysmatic bone cysts since 1973 resulted in a very contenting management of treatment. Active solitary bone cysts, recurrent cysts, fractured cysts and large cysts close to joints are treated by segmental resection, interposing of ribs, homologous or aut

Authors describe histological observations of 15 cases of aneurysmal bone cysts. Frequent occurrence of areas similar to giant cell tumor or solitary bone cyst was found together with fields producing chondroid intercellular substance. Attention is called to the differentiation of the two lesions described above and occasionally tumors and tumor-like conditions of chondroblastic origin. The vascular changes observed in the surroundings (arteriologsclerosis) support the earlier hypotheses attaching importance to local hemodynamic disturbance in the pathogenesis of the lesion. In certain cases p

Unicameral bone cysts (UBC) or simple/solitary bone cysts are benign fluid filled cavities that enlarge over time, resulting in thinning of the bone. Usually these cysts are reported in the metaphyseal areas of long bones with open physes. 85% of UBCs occur almost exclusively in children and adolescents. UBCs are more aggressive in the first decade of life and correspondingly the recurrence rate for these patients is four times that for adolescents. The proximal humerus and femur account for almost 90% of these cases. UBCs are classified as active when they are within 1 cm of the physis and la

Unicameral and aneurysmal bone cysts are considered tumorlike conditions of unclear origin. The diagnosis of unicameral bone cysts is almost always based on the radiographic appearance, whereas aneurysmal bone cyst imaging may sometimes mimic a sarcomatous lesion. Several pathogenetic hypotheses [correction of hypothesis] reported in literature have been described. Classifications have been proposed to detect the activity of the cysts and to predict the prognostic behavior. The results observed with different options of treatment have been discussed.

The etiology and pathogenesis of traumatic bone cyst are still far from being conclusively established with multiple theories, names, and forms of management being proposed and used. The rarity of these lesions in the older age groups suggests that self-healing can occur. This article presents two well-documented cases of what clinically and radiographically were consistent with so-called "traumatic bone cyst" of the mandible, which have appeared to heal without surgical intervention, thus providing additional information to our understanding of the biologic nature of this entity. Case 1 invol

Bone cysts are often found on x-ray examinations of patients in their first two decades of life. We present an extremely rare case of cystically changed first metatarsal bone of the left foot. The content of the cyst was histopathologically verified as consisting of a mixture of echinococcal scolexes and chondrosarcomatous tissue.
