An aneurysmal bone cyst is a tumor-simulating bone lesion, the etiology of which is still unclear and probably inhomogeneous. This type of lesion is mainly observed during the second decade of life and is rarely diagnosed beyond the age of 30 years. It is characterized by hollow spaces consisting of several compartments filled with blood and partially divided by septs consisting of spindle-cell tissue with ample multinuclear giant cells and frequent reactive new bone formation. The locations of preference are the metaphyses of the long bones, the spine and flat bones; however, they can appear

AIMS: The aim of this study was to analyze the complications and outcomes of treatment in a series of previously untreated patients with a primary aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) who had been treated by percutaneous sclerosant therapy using polidocanol.
METHODS: Between January 2010 and December 2016, 56 patients were treated primarily with serial intralesional sclerosant injections. Their mean age was 20 years (1 to 54). The sites involved were clavicle (n = 3), humeri (n = 11), radius (n = 1), ulna (n = 3), hand (n = 2), pelvis (n = 12), femur (n = 7), tibia (n = 13), fibula (n = 3), and foot (n

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign primary or secondary lesions that commonly arise in long bones and often before skeletal maturity. Little has been written about aneurysmal bone cysts that abut the physeal plate. The records of 15 patients with juxtaphyseal aneurysmal bone cysts were reviewed. Fourteen of the patients were referred with abnormal radiographs after evaluation for pain in the affected limb. One patient presented with abnormal radiographs after fracture about the aneurysmal bone cyst. None of the patients had evidence of growth plate disruption. The children's ages ranged from 2 t

In 1942, Jaffe and Lichtenstein introduced the term aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC). Primary ABC is characterized by the presence of spongy or multi-cameral cystic tissue filled with blood. The process is benign, but it is locally destructive and has a high propensity for recurrence. In this paper, we present the third case of multiple metachronous primary ABCs as a rare variant of ABC. We describe the 10-year history of a 12-year-old boy with metachronous multiple primary ABCs at five different sites (right proximal humerus, right ulna, bilateral distal radius and right lateral clavicle). Unicameral and aneurysmal bone cysts are considered tumorlike conditions of unclear origin. The diagnosis of unicameral bone cysts is almost always based on the radiographic appearance, whereas aneurysmal bone cyst imaging may sometimes mimic a sarcomatous lesion. Several pathogenetic hypotheses [correction of hypothesis] reported in literature have been described. Classifications have been proposed to detect the activity of the cysts and to predict the prognostic behavior. The results observed with different options of treatment have been discussed.

One hundred and seventy-eight cases of unicameral bone cysts (UBC) treated with curettage and bone grafting were compared to 141 cases treated with cortisone injections. The end results were comparable in the two groups. Local recurrence risk factors in the surgical group were active cyst and previous operations. In the other group they were multilocation of the cyst, active cyst, and size of cyst. A new radiographic classification of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is proposed in a report of 198 cases of ABC. The treatment of choice in ABC is surgical and the type (curettage, curettage plus phenol

Authors describe histological observations of 15 cases of aneurysmal bone cysts. Frequent occurrence of areas similar to giant cell tumor or solitary bone cyst was found together with fields producing chondroid intercellular substance. Attention is called to the differentiation of the two lesions described above and occasionally tumors and tumor-like conditions of chondroblastic origin. The vascular changes observed in the surroundings (arteriologsclerosis) support the earlier hypotheses attaching importance to local hemodynamic disturbance in the pathogenesis of the lesion. In certain cases p

Simple and aneurysmal bone cysts are benign lytic bone lesions, usually encountered in children and adolescents. Simple bone cyst is a cystic, fluid-filled lesion, which may be unicameral (UBC) or partially separated. UBC can involve all bones, but usually the long bone metaphysis and otherwise primarily the proximal humerus and proximal femur. The classic aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is an expansive and hemorrhagic tumor, usually showing characteristic translocation. About 30% of ABCs are secondary, without translocation; they occur in reaction to another, usually benign, bone lesion. ABCs are

Aneurysmal bone cysts are unique pathologic entities that cause pain and local osseous destruction. Many surgical treatment modalities have been described. This article reports on the case of a 16-year-old high school athlete with left heel pain due to an aneurysmal bone cyst in the calcaneus. Curettage of the bone cyst was performed, and the void was filled with a commercially available mixture of cancellous bone and demineralized bone matrix. Early return to athletic activity was achieved, with no recurrence noted at 3-year follow-up.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cysts are reported. Each patient presented with a palpable mass in the occipital region and signs of compression of structures in the posterior fossa. One of the cases is unique, in that the aneurysmal bone cyst was associated with an epidural hematoma in the posterior fossa. The pertinent literature is reviewed.

Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign neoplastic lesions that are extensively vascularized and can occasionally exhibit destructive and expanding activity. They typically affect young people, with a small predilection toward females, and most frequently arise during the second decade of life. Aneurysmal bone cysts account for about 1% of all bone tumors and usually develop in long tubular bones, with the spine being much less commonly affected.

Bone cysts in the pediatric population are often found incidentally on radiographs or after a cyst has created cortical weakness leading to a pathologic fracture. Most bone cysts are benign, are pain free, and resolve spontaneously. The most common bone cyst is unicameral 1-chamber bone cyst, also known as simple bone cyst. General practice pediatricians may be the first to encounter these lesions, and this article aims to help elucidate their incidence, etiology, clinical findings, radiologic findings, and modern treatment approaches. The other differential diagnoses that should be considered

Aneurysmal bone cysts (ABCs) are benign bone lesions arising predominantly in the pediatric population that can cause local pain, swelling, and pathologic fracture. Primary lesions, which constitute roughly two thirds of all ABCs, are thought to be neoplastic in nature, with one third of ABCs arising secondary to other tumors. Diagnosis is made with various imaging modalities, which exhibit characteristic features such as "fluid-fluid levels," although biopsy is critical, as telangiectatic osteosarcoma cannot be excluded based on imaging alone. Currently, the standard of care and most widely e

Aneurysmal bone cysts are uncommon bony lesions of the spine. Two such patients are reported in the study. The first patient had involvement of first and second thoracic vertebrae, and a preoperative diagnosis was made possible due to the typical magnetic resonance imaging appearances. A total removal was achieved in two stages. In the second patient the C2 spinous process was involved, and this patient presented as atantoaxial dislocation. Removal of the abnormal tissue and posterior fusion was done. Both the patients showed neurologic improvement. The relevant literature is reviewed.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst of the spine are reported. These rather rare tumours may pose initial diagnostic problems. If, however, the clinical and radiological features are studied, diagnosis should be easy and the appropriate treatment will follow. Computed tomography provides an additional diagnostic aid. Management appears to be primarily surgical, but the role of radiotherapy has not yet been clearly defined.

Two cases of aneurysmal bone cyst are recorded. In the first there is clinical evidence to suggest that the lesion had been present for an unusually long period while incomplete clinical records of the other also indicate an unusual history. Histologically both lesions show a paucity of giant cells. It is not possible to make significant observations on aetiology other than support the theory that the lesion arises as a result of altered haemodynamics.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of radiation therapy (RT) as an adjuvant or alternative treatment for patients with aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records of 12 patients who received RT at the University of Florida for ABC between 1964 and 2011 were reviewed and patients were contacted, when possible, for follow-up. Follow-up duration ranged from 3 to 36 years (median, 20.5 y). Patient age at the time of RT ranged from 3 to 23 years (mean, 12.75 y), with 7 females and 5 males. Four patients were treated for recurrent ABCs. Three patients were tr

Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a osteolytic bone lesion that rarely involves the jaws. To date, a total of 92 cases of JABCs have been described in detail in English literature. They prevalently occur in the first 2 decades (72.8%) with slight female predilection. It affects the mandible more often (68.5%) with a predominant location in the mandibular ramus (31.3%) and its posterior regions (20.4%). A painless (54.7%) or painful (43.2%) bone swelling is the most frequent clinical sign. Radiologically 93.8% of the lesions present as a radiolucency; in 69.4% multilocular in appearance. 15.2% of J

The aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare, expansive, osteolytic, pseudocystic lesion with an unknown etiology. It usually affects long bones and the spine. Two to 5 % of cases have mandibular localization (between 75 and 100 % present on the mandible) accounting for 1 % of all mandibular cysts. Less than 200 cases have been reported in English and French literature.
