Bone density determination.

Bone mineral density determination is an integral part of the diagnosis, therapeutic planning, and monitoring of a patient with osteoporosis. Although the utility of measuring bone density seems intuitive, decisions must be made regarding whom to test, when to test, which technique to use, and which body site to evaluate. Once a determination has been made, consideration has to be given to what to do with the results. Each patient must be individually considered, incorporating genetic, nutritional, lifestyle, pharmacologic, and endocrine risk factors. Other diseases that may be associated with

Measurements of bone mineral density. Mineral density in metabolic bone disease.

Bone metabolism and thus bone remodelling and bone mineral content are profoundly influenced by many hormonal and metabolic factors. This review presents the state of the art procedures for bone mineral absorptiometry and examines the interactions of endocrine and metabolic diseases and bone mineral content. Preventive and therapeutic modalities of osteoporosis are discussed in this context.

High bone density and bone health.

The aim of this paper is to review the main aspects related to high bone density (HBD) as well as to discuss the physiologic mechanisms involved in bone health. There are still no well-defined criteria for identification of individuals with HBD and there are few studies on the topic. Most studies demonstrate that overweight, male gender, black ethnic background, physical activity, calcium and fluoride intake and use of medications such as statins and thiazide diuretics play a relevant and positive role on bone mineral density. Moreover, it is known that individuals with certain diseases such a

Bone mineral density and mammographic density in Mexican women.

BACKGROUND: Bone mineral density (BMD) is a putative marker for lifetime exposure to estrogen. Studies that have explored whether BMD is a determinant of mammographic density (MD) have observed inconsistent results. Therefore,we examined this potential association in a sample of women (n = 1,516) from the clinical sub-cohort in the Mexican teachers’ cohort (n = 115,315). METHODS: We used multivariable linear regression to assess the association between quartiles of BMD and percent MD, as well as total dense and non-dense area of the breast, stratified by menopausal status. We also examined th

Bone density, bone markers and bone radiological features in mastocytosis.

We examined the association between severity of disease in mastocytosis and skeletal manifestation and bone markers in 16 patients varying in extent of mastocytosis as determined by the urine excretion of methylimidazoleacetic acid. Both osteoporosis and osteosclerosis were found. Bone density in the hip was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in both men and women with an enhanced histamine metabolite excretion. Patients with only moderately increased mast cell mass had low bone mineral density in the hip, osteoporosis and vertebral fractures. The different skeletal disease patterns in mastocytos

Bone density in competitive cyclists.

To investigate current theories of the contributing factors to osteopenia/osteoporosis in competitive cyclists, we present a narrative review of published cross-sectional studies investigating plausible etiologies of decreased bone density in competitive cyclists. Aggregate from multiple published studies as cited. Bone mineral density in cyclists appears to be correlated positively to the cumulative amount of bone loading forces experienced over a lifetime. However, decreases in bone mineral density are noted over the short term if bone loading forces are removed, despite previous gains. Ther

Pediatric bone density and fracture.

As children grow, they accumulate bone mineral, which serves as a "bone bank" for the future. Any condition that interferes with normal bone mineral accrual during childhood has the potential to reduce peak bone mass and subsequently increase future risk for fracture. In contrast to adults, for whom dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has become the standard clinical instrument for assessing bone mineral density and criteria have been developed to define osteopenia and osteoporosis, information for children is still limited. Numerous issues confound the interpretation of DXA-derived bone mi

Bone-density changes after stroke.

It has been many years since bone loss and fracture risk were first recognized as serious complications of stroke. Hip fracture is associated with a substantial increase in morbidity and mortality for stroke survivors, and therefore, assessing and maintaining skeletal health after stroke should be an important clinical goal. Recent long-term, prospective studies have illustrated a highly nonuniform pattern of bone changes after stroke. In general, there is significant bone loss on the paretic side, which is greatest in those patients with the most severe functional deficits. In some patients,

Maternity and bone mineral density.

During pregnancy and lactation, changes occur in a variety of factors which have great potential to influence bone mineral density (BMD). Smoking habits, the level of alcohol consumption, the level of physical activity, body weight, soft tissue composition and hormone levels are all factors that change during the course of these conditions. Some of these factors are capable of increasing BMD, and some can reduce it. Due to these various changes, it is virtually impossible to predict the development in BMD that will occur during a pregnancy and lactation. However, longitudinal studies have sugg

Exercise and bone mineral density.

A decrease in physical activity may lead to an increased loss of bone and an increase in the incidence of osteoporotic fractures. Studies have demonstrated increases in bone formation in animals and increases in bone mineral density in humans. Studies of animals show that bone has enhanced physical and mechanical properties following periods of increased stress. Strains which are high in rate and magnitude, and of abnormal distribution, but not necessarily long in duration, are best for inducing new bone formation, resulting in the strengthening of bone by increased density. Cross-sectional st

Bone mineral density and pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted physical health, including bone mineral density (BMD). This review aims to explore the effects of various pandemic-related factors such as reduced physical activity, stress, depression, dietary changes, and SARS-CoV-2 infection on BMD. Methods involved analyzing studies that investigate the impact of these factors on bone health, including observational studies, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Results show that decreased physical activity, depression, and changes in diet lead to a reduction in BMD, particularly in the lumbar spine and fem

Hyperprolactinaemia is one of the most common endocrinological disorder at women at the reproductive age. Prolactin is produced by the anterior lobe of the pituitary. The main role of prolactin is associated with mamotrophic action and lactogenesis. Hyperprolactinaemia causes several symptoms such as menstrual disorders, infertility, decrease of sexual function, galactorrhea in women and gynecomasty, impotence and decrease of semen quality in men. Recent studies have presented prolactin as a homone involved in many metabolic processes. Long-term consequences of high prolactin serum concentratio

[Genetic determination of bone density].

Osteoporosis is a very common disease that concerns every forth postmenopausal white woman. The loss of bone density leads to fractures, mainly to fractures of the neck of the femur. A hereditary genesis of the idiopathic osteoporosis seems to be sure. The vitamin D receptor (VDR) has an important role for the mineralisation of the bones. His allelic variants can be used for a prediction of bone density. These alleles are correlated with endonuclease restriction areas for Bsm-1, Apa-1 and Taq-1. Among these Bsm-1 has the highest incidence for prediction. In this study the allelic variants of t

Assessment of bone density in children with cerebral palsy by areal bone mineral density measurement.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to investigate the frequency of decreased areal bone mineral density (aBMD) among patients with cerebral palsy (CP), as estimated by using various aBMD Z-score adjustment methods. In addition, this study examined factors related to decreased aBMD scores. One hundred and two children between the ages of 3.2 and 17.8 years were examined. In patients with severe CP, the incidences of decreased aBMD according to various adjusting methods based on decimal age, bone age, height age, and height-for-age Z-score (HAZ) were 79.5%, 69.5%, 51.9%, and 38.3%, respec

Impact exercise and bone density in premenopausal women with below average bone density for age.

PURPOSE: To study the effects of two home-based impact exercise programs on areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in adult premenopausal women with below average aBMD for age (negative Z-scores; 40.8 years; n = 107). METHODS: Two unilateral impact exercise programs were employed, one targeting the total hip and lumbar spine (n = 42 pairs), the other the distal radius (n = 24 pairs) with some individuals performing both. Force plate data were used to establish exercise loading characteristics (peak loads, time to peak), dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) provided bone data. Calcium intake, hea

Bone Mineral Density in the Scaphoid.

Introduction: The scaphoid bone is essential for wrist stability and movement. While fractures commonly occur at the scaphoid's waist, those at the proximal pole, though rarer, tend to result in nonunion, potentially linked to variations in bone mineral density (BMD). Previous studies have shown an increase in BMD at the proximal pole in fractured scaphoids, but BMD distribution in intact scaphoids has not been well studied. This study aims to map the BMD distribution of the intact scaphoid to better understand the etiology of fractures and optimize treatment approaches. Methods: Conducted und
