SUMMARY: We report the case of a 69-year-old female with systemic mastocytosis, diagnosed based on widespread pigmented papules and macules, elevated serum tryptase levels and confirmatory skin and bone marrow biopsy, on a background of osteoporosis. A CT demonstrated multiple sclerotic lesions within lumbar vertebral bodies, sacrum and ileum, with surrounding osteolysis but no obvious compression fractures. She was treated with the RANK-L inhibitor denosumab, resulting in significant bone mineral density gain over the following 5 years. However, her serum tryptase levels gradually increased d

The aim of this study is to evaluate the osteogenesis around titanium implant and in bone defect or fracture in jaw bones and long bones in ovariectomized (OVX) animal models. The literature on the osteogenesis around titanium implant and in bone defect or fracture in jaw bones and long bones was reviewed with charts. Fourty-eight rats were randomly divided into OVX group with ovariectomy and SHAM (sham-surgery) group with sham surgery. Titanium implants were inserted in the right mandibles and tibiae; bone defects were created in the left mandibles and tibiae. Two-week postoperatively, mandib

Children with cancer are exposed to multiple influences that may adversely affect bone health. Some treatments have direct deleterious effects on bone whilst others may have indirect effects mediated through various endocrine abnormalities. Most clinical outcome studies have concentrated on survivors of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL). There is now good evidence that earlier treatment protocols that included cranial irradiation with doses of 24 Gy or greater may result in growth hormone deficiency and low bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine and femoral neck. Under current protoc

INTRODUCTION: We report the case of a patient with a craniofacial black bone disease. This was discovered accidentally during a coronal approach.
CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old patient was referred to our unit for facial palsy having appeared 10 years before. Rehabilitation of the facial palsy was performed with a lengthening temporal myoplasty and lengthening of the upper eyelid elevator. An unusual black color of the skull was observed at incision of the coronal approach. Subperiostal dissection of skull and malars confirmed the presence of a black bone disease. A postoperative history revealed

Elective osteotomies of post-irradiated midfacial bones to correct the resulting facial deformities can be safely performed. When there is an associated radiation-induced enophthalmos, improvement in appearance can be achieved, but the results often falls short of an ideal restoration. Transposing a temporalis flap into the orbit is an excellent means of freeing the irradiated, contracted, enucleated orbital socket.

The "bone within a bone" appearance is a well-recognized radiological term with a variety of causes. It is important to recognize this appearance and also to be aware of the differential diagnosis. A number of common conditions infrequently cause this appearance. Other causes are rare and some remain primarily of historical interest, as they are no longer encountered in clinical practice. In this review we illustrate some of the conditions that can give the bone within a bone appearance and discuss the physiological and pathological aetiology of each where known.

The necessity of milk consumption in the western diet is a subject of intense controversy. One of the main benefits of milk is that it is the main source of dietary calcium. Calcium is a major bone mineral, mandatory for bone health. Its supply is derived exclusively from external dietary sources. During the growth period, an increased calcium supply is needed for the process of bone mass accumulation. An optimal bone mass achieved by the end of the growth period may be protective later in life against the bone mass loss that commonly occurs. This in turn, can be preventative against the occur

Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, all have one clear common denominator; an altered turnover of bone. However, this may be more complex than a simple change in bone matrix and mineral turnover. While these diseases share a common tissue axis, their manifestations in the area of pathology are highly diverse, ranging from sclerosis to erosion of bone in different regions. The management of these diseases will benefit from a deeper understanding of the local versus systemic effects, the relation to the equilibrium of the bone balance (i.e., bon

We examined the association between severity of disease in mastocytosis and skeletal manifestation and bone markers in 16 patients varying in extent of mastocytosis as determined by the urine excretion of methylimidazoleacetic acid. Both osteoporosis and osteosclerosis were found. Bone density in the hip was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in both men and women with an enhanced histamine metabolite excretion. Patients with only moderately increased mast cell mass had low bone mineral density in the hip, osteoporosis and vertebral fractures. The different skeletal disease patterns in mastocytos

The mammalian skeleton is a metabolically active organ that continuously undergoes bone remodeling, a process of tightly coupled bone resorption and formation throughout life. Recent studies have expanded our knowledge about the interactions between cells within bone marrow in bone remodeling. Macrophages resident in bone (BMMs) can regulate bone metabolism via secreting numbers of cytokines and exosomes. This review summarizes the current understanding of factors, exosomes, and hormones that involved in the communications between BMMs and other bone cells including mensenchymal stem cells, os

Biochemical markers of bone turnover have been used for decades in the management of bone diseases, to assess the prognosis of these conditions and to monitor treatments. The new markers, however, also reflect specific physiological mechanisms in the bone or other organs. Periostin may be more specific to the periosteum; cathepsin K is an osteoclastic enzyme that may be involved in the cardiovascular system and joints; Dickkopf-1 is involved in bone formation and vascular calcification; sclerostin is a major regulator of bone formation in response to mechanical loading and may also play a role

Increased bone fragility and osteoporotic fracture in human bone has been attributed to the accumulation of microdamage. According to Martin and Burr (J Biomech 15:137-139; 1982), microcracks from interstitial bone propagate to the cement line or concentric lamellae and debond or separate the Haversian canal from the surrounding bone which leads to repair of the damaged region. If this is true, we would expect to find a greater incidence of microdamage existing at the cement line than at other locations within the bone microstructure. The incidence of such an occurrence, however, is not establ

Densitometrically, the skeleton is currently conceived as 'a systemically regulated mass of mineralized material that is born, grows, reaches a more or less high peak, and then declines faster or slower as to develop a correspondingly high or low fracture risk'. Alternatively, from a biomechanical point of view, the skeleton can be conceived as 'a biomechanically-regulated structure that can be systemically disturbed (in the cybernetic sense), the strength of which depends on the intrinsic stiffness (material properties) and the spatial distribution (architectural properties) of the mineralize

The bone marrow represents one of the largest organs in the body, with a relevant metabolic role that continues to be investigated. Numerous studies have focused on marrow adipose tissue (MAT). Evidence indicates that the bone marrow adipocytes do not only work as storage tissue but also consist of endocrine and paracrine cells, with the potential to contribute to local and systemic metabolism. MAT plays a role in bone health through its interaction with the other components of bone. Many metabolic disorders (osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes) have a complex and still not well-established or und

Metastatic bone disease is common, and affects more than 5 million individuals in the United States. Patients may present with bone pain. If a patient is known to have a cancer that commonly spreads to bone (ie, kidney, lung, breast, prostate, thyroid), metastatic bone disease should be considered as a cause. Bone metastases also may be detected incidentally on x-rays. For patients not known to have a cancer, medical history, physical examination, and laboratory tests may indicate the primary malignancy site. X-ray is the primary imaging modality, but magnetic resonance imaging study, computed

Breast cancer tumors have a tendency to metastasize to the bone. After development of a bone metastasis, the median survival time is 40 months. Currently, little is known about the modifiable risk factors for developing bone metastases in women diagnosed with breast cancer. One possible modifiable risk factor is increased bone resorption. Increased bone resorption is caused by an imbalance between osteoblasts and osteoclasts favoring osteoclast-driven bone resorption. Osteoclast activity results in the release of growth factors from the bony matrix that are requirement for successful breast ca

Aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare, non-neoplastic lesion that mostly involves the long bone and the spine, and is characterized by its expansile, vascular, and multi-cystic features. Reports of facial bone lesions are rare, and when it occurs, is usually located in the mandible. Herein, this report is aimed to describe a very rare case of an aneurysmal bone cyst in the zygoma with a brief review of the literature.
