Implants placed with high insertion torque (IT) typically exhibit primary stability, which enables early loading. Whether high IT has a negative impact on peri-implant bone health, however, remains to be determined. The purpose of this study was to ascertain how peri-implant bone responds to strains and stresses created when implants are placed with low and high IT. Titanium micro-implants were inserted into murine femurs with low and high IT using torque values that were scaled to approximate those used to place clinically sized implants. Torque created in peri-implant tissues a distribution

New strategies involving bone-targeting titanium (Ti) implant-bone interface are required to enhance bone regeneration and osseointegration for orthopedic and dental implants, especially in osteoporotic subjects. In this study, a new dual-controlled, local, bone-targeting delivery system was successfully constructed by loading tetracycline-grafted simvastatin (SV)-loaded polymeric micelles in titania nanotube (TNT) arrays, and a bone-targeting Ti implant-bone interface was also successfully constructed by implanting the delivery system in vivo. The biological effects were evaluated both in vit

BACKGROUND: An electronically controlled mechanical tapping device (MTD) to measure implant stability has been studied extensively for its ability to measure initial stability at the time of surgical placement and predict an implant's survival prognosis, with few reported complications.
METHODS: Initial stability data, measured repeatedly with a resonance frequency analysis device and the MTD, for seven of 28 implants placed in jawbones of four fresh human cadavers and the histologic images of bone-implant interfaces are presented as evidence for potential damage to the bone-implant interface

The objective of this study was to explore the hypothesis that osteoporotic-like (OP) conditions have a negative effect on osseointegration (OI) of dental implants. Using an ovariectomized (OVX) rat model, the extent of OI using histologic and histomorphometric analysis (HMA) under a variety of OVX conditions was assessed. Five experimental groups (n = 7 rats per group) were used: 1) OP control, 2) OI control, () OI followed by OVX treatment to induce OP (OI-->OP), 4) OP induction followed by OI (OP-->OI), and 5) OP induction simultaneously with OI (OI = OP). Using undecalcified plastic-embedd

Many studies have found that the threshold of occlusal force tolerated by titanium-based implants is significantly lower than that of natural teeth due to differences in biomechanical mechanisms. Therefore, implants are considered to be susceptible to occlusal trauma. In clinical practice, many implants have shown satisfactory biocompatibility, but the balance between biomechanics and biofunction remains a huge clinical challenge. This paper comprehensively analyzes and summarizes various stress distribution optimization methods to explore strategies for improving the resistance of the implant

In the present scenario, dental implants have proven to be a very reliable and popular treatment option for partial and completely edentulous arches. The biological, chemical, local, clinician, and implant related factors determine sequence of bone turnover that eventually enhances the success of implant therapy. The positioning of implant is followed by an inflammatory process that results in de novo bone formation and deposition on the implant surface. Pure titanium is commercially the prime material of choice for an implant. The implant surface can be chemically altered by a change in manuf

Dental implant materials can develop different kinds of interfaces when used for bone or tooth substitution. This paper describes the tissues and the tissue reactions of the interface created in the implantation bed between bone tissue and implants made of dense sintered hydroxylapatite. Healing was clinically and histologically evaluated during a six-month to five-year period. The light microscopic results show extensive bone apposition on the osseous sides of loaded implant cylinders and also on subperiosteally placed granules of dense hydroxylapatite. The presence of the loaded implant did

A recent approach to improve the osseointegration of implants is to utilize local drug administration. The presence of an osteoporosis drug may influence both bone quantity and quality at the bone/implant interface. Despite this, the performance of bone-anchoring implants is traditionally evaluated only by quantitative measurements. In the present study, the osteoporosis drug alendronate (ALN) was administrated from mesoporous titania thin films that were coated onto titanium implants. The effect that the drug had on biomineralization was explored both in vitro using simulated body fluid (SBF)

The aim of this study is to assess the stress distribution on the bone tissue and bone-implant interface of a customized anatomic root-analog dental implant (RAI) by means of finite element analysis (FEA) for different types of bone density. A mandibular right second premolar was selected from the CBCT database. A DICOM file was converted to an STL file to create a CAD model in FEA software. The bone boundary model was created, while bone density types I-IV were determined. Von Mises stress was measured at bone tissues and bone-implant interfaces. To validate the models, the RAI was 3D printed

Evaluating the bone-implant interface (BII) properties of osseointegrated transfemoral (TFA) implants is important for early failure detection and prescribing loads during rehabilitation. The objective of this work is to derive and validate a 1D finite element (FE) model of the Osseointegrated Prosthetic Limb (OPL) TFA system that can: (1) model its dynamic behaviour and (2) extract the BII properties. The model was validated by: (1) comparing the 1D FE formulation to the analytical and 3D FE solutions for a simplified cylinder, (2) comparing the vibration modes of the actual TFA geometry usin

An attractive approach in implant technology is local drug delivery, and design of efficient, safe and reliable treatments. Our hitherto strategy has been to coat Ti implants with a thin mesoporous TiO2 film that in turn is loaded with an osteoporosis drug, such as Alendronate (ALN) that is known to suppress osteoclastic activity. This system has proven highly successful and results in excellent osseointegration. However, more detailed information about drug-release and distribution at the bone/implant interface is needed. In this study, (14)C-ALN loaded titanium implants were placed up to 8 w

Connective soft tissues at the interface between implants and bone, such as in human joint replacements, can endanger the stability of the implant fixation. The potential of an implant to generate interface bone resorption and form soft tissue depends on many variables, including mechanical ones. These mechanical factors can be expressed in terms of relative motions between bone and implant at the interface or deformation of the interfacial material. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if interface debonding and subsequent relative interface motions can be responsible for interf

BACKGROUND: Wear particles, found at the bone-implant interface surrounding a loose prosthesis, are commonly phagocytosed by macrophages. Wear particles and wear particle-containing macrophages are also found in regional lymph nodes draining arthroplasty tissues. The means by which wear particles are transported from arthroplasty tissues to lymph nodes is uncertain, as the presence or absence of lymphatic vessels in periprosthetic tissues has not been established.
METHODS: We determined immunophenotypic expression of LYVE-1 and podoplanin, two highly specific lymphatic endothelial cell marker

PURPOSE: Due to the irregularity of cervical inferior endplate morphology among individuals and segments, a bone-implant interface (BII) gap is usually unavoidable between the prosthesis and endplate after cervical disc replacement (CDR). This study aimed to investigate the clinical and biomechanical effects of the BII gap after CDR.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical and radiological data of 180 patients who underwent 1-level or 2-level CDR. Cervical sagittal parameters, implant subsidence and migration, heterotopic ossification (HO) were evaluated through lateral radiographs.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical research has documented that cage subsidence and the loss of balance correction is a significant complication related to spinal fusion. Subsidence is a multifactorial complication, where implant design is one important element. The aim of the study is to compare the rigidity and bone-implant relative motion of segments treated with either a conventional one-piece ALIF cage versus a two-piece ALIF cage, which adapts in situ and permits 7°-21° of lordosis.
METHODS: Seven lumbosacral (L3-S1) human cadaver specimens were tested in a universal spine tester in the intact cond
