Clinicopathologic Features of Antibrush Border Antibody Disease.

IntroductionAntibrush border antibody disease (ABBA) is an autoimmune tubulointerstitial kidney disease that primarily affects older individuals and results in progressive kidney failure. It is rare with only 20 reported cases. Here, we describe a case series to further define the clinicopathologic spectrum and natural history, and to inform management.MethodsWe identified 67 patients with ABBA who underwent kidney biopsy, including 65 native and 2 transplants. Demographics, clinical findings, and laboratory data were obtained. Histopathologic data included light microscopy, immunofluorescence

Antibrush Border Antibody Disease: A Case Series.

Antibrush border antibody (ABBA) disease is a rare cause of kidney disease characterized by progressive renal tubular injury associated with immune complex deposition along the basement membranes of the proximal tubule and circulating autoantibodies to brush border antigens. Several antigens have been identified as targets of autoantibodies in this disease, including low-density lipoprotein receptor related protein 2 (LRP2), cubilin, and amnionless proteins. We present 9 patients from 2 academic medical centers and describe the clinicopathologic characteristics and outcome data. All patients p

Brush border enzymes in coeliac disease: histochemical evaluation.

Two hundred and ninety four duodenal and jejunal mucosal biopsy specimens from patients with coeliac disease, treated and untreated, and other conditions were examined histologically and by histochemical staining for five peptidase and three disaccharidase enzymes to determine profiles of activity. Suppression of activity paralleled the histology with the following enzymes: lactase, trehalase, brush border endopeptidase, dipeptidyl peptidase II and isomaltase. Lactase, trehalase, and brush border endopeptidase were specifically suppressed in untreated coeliac disease and were diagnostically us

Functional border-associated macrophages limit Alzheimer's Disease progression.

Brain-resident macrophages are known to play numerous roles in the progression of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). However, the relative contribution of microglia and border-associated macrophages (BAM) to AD pathogenesis has been difficult to disentangle. We recently identified Maf, a newly described AD GWAS gene, as essential for BAM, but not microglial, survival. By crossing BAM depleted mice with the 5xFAD AD model, we found stark evidence of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), increased overall β-amyloid burden, accelerated markers of neurodegeneration, and early memory deficits. In the healthy b

Genetic variation of Border disease virus species strains.

The 5'-untranslated region of Pestivirus strains isolated from domestic and wild animals were analysed to determine their taxonomic status according to nucleotide changes in the secondary genomic structure using the palindromic nucleotide substitutions (PNS) method. A total of 131 isolates out of 536 Pestivirus strains evaluated, were clustered as Border disease virus (BDV) species. The BDV strains were further divided into at least 8 genotypes or subspecies. Thirty-two isolates from small ruminants suffering from clinical symptoms of Border disease were clustered into bovine viral diarrhoea v

[Clonal diseases in the border zone rheumatology/hematology].

Chronic inflammation and disorders of immunoregulation are basic traits of inflammatory rheumatic diseases and also cofactors in the development and sequelae of plasma cell dyscrasias with associated gammopathy. Therefore, in cases of unclear rheumatological symptoms the possibility of an underlying monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) should always be considered. The thorough examination of patients with a monoclonal gammopathy is important to be able to differentiate between MGUS, monoclonal gammopathy of clinical significance (MGCS) and multiple myeloma.

Alpha-theta border EEG abnormalities in preclinical Huntington's disease.

BACKGROUND: Brain dysfunction precedes clinical manifestation of Huntington's disease (HD) by decades. This study was aimed to determine whether resting EEG is altered in preclinical HD mutations carriers (pre-HD). METHODS: We examined relative power of broad traditional EEG bands as well as 1-Hz sub-bands of theta and alpha from the resting-state EEG of 29 pre-HD individuals and of 29 age-matched normal controls. RESULTS: The relative power of the narrow sub-band in the border of theta-alpha (7-8 Hz) was significantly reduced in pre-HD subjects as compared to normal controls, while the alte

CNS Border-Associated Macrophages: Ontogeny and Potential Implication in Disease.

Being immune privileged, the central nervous system (CNS) is constituted by unique parenchymal and non-parenchymal tissue-resident macrophages, namely, microglia and border-associated macrophages (BAMs), respectively. BAMs are found in the choroid plexus, meningeal and perivascular spaces, playing critical roles in maintaining CNS homeostasis while being phenotypically and functionally distinct from microglial cells. Although the ontogeny of microglia has been largely determined, BAMs need comparable scrutiny as they have been recently discovered and have not been thoroughly explored. Newly de

Continuing evidence of Chagas disease along the Texas-Mexico border.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease is a chronic parasitic infection that progresses to dilated cardiomyopathy in 30% of human cases. Public health efforts target diagnosing asymptomatic cases, as therapeutic efficacy diminishes as irreversible tissue damage progresses. Physician diagnosis of Chagas disease cases in the United States is low, partially due to lack of awareness of the potential burden in the United States. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The current study tested a patient cohort of 1,196 Starr County, Texas residents using the Hemagen Chagas ELISA Kit as a preliminary screening assay. S

Antibrush Border Antibody Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Anti-brush border antibody (ABBA) disease, also called anti-low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 2 (anti-LRP2) nephropathy, occurs due to the formation of antibodies against brush border antigens of the renal proximal convoluted tubule. We report a case of ABBA disease in a male farmer in his 30s who presented with 2 years of polyuria, dysuria, nocturia, and urinary urgency. He described a history of long-term occupational exposure to pesticides and silica, evolving into possible pneumoconiosis, and prior pulmonary tuberculosis. At presentation, he had reduced kidney function (seru

[AIDS and transmissible opportunistic diseases in the Brazilian border area].

INTRODUCTION: Person-to-person transmission of HIV and other communicable diseases may be associated with human geographic mobility. This article evaluated the incidence of transmissible opportunistic diseases among AIDS cases that had been reported by municipalities in the Brazilian border area. METHODS: Brazilian border area municipalities were grouped into three cultural regions; the source data was AIDS cases registered with the Ministry of Health from 1990 to 2003, which were classified according to CDC-adapted, Rio de Janeiro/Caracas and death criteria; detected communicable opportunist

Immune conversations at the border: meningeal immunity in health and disease.

The brain and spinal cord, collectively known as the central nervous system, are encapsulated by an overlapping series of membranes known as the meninges. Once considered primarily a physical barrier for central nervous system protection, the bordering meninges are now recognized as highly immunologically active. The meninges host diverse resident immune cells and serve as a critical interface with peripheral immunity, playing multifaceted roles in maintaining central nervous system homeostasis, responding to pathogenic threats, and neurological disorders. This review summarizes recent advance

Immune compartments at the brain's borders in health and neurovascular diseases.

Recent evidence implicates cranial border immune compartments in the meninges, choroid plexus, circumventricular organs, and skull bone marrow in several neuroinflammatory and neoplastic diseases. Their pathogenic importance has also been described for cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and stroke. In this review, we will examine the cellular composition of these cranial border immune niches, the potential pathways through which they might interact, and the evidence linking them to cardiovascular disease.

Investigation into an outbreak of Border disease virus in pigs in England.

Border disease (BD) was first reported in 1959 in lambs from the border region of England and Wales. The causative virus (BD virus; BDV) has since been identified in several other ruminant species and pigs. The virus is prevalent in sheep flocks of UK, Europe and USA and has potential to inflict substantial economic losses. Natural BDV infection of pigs was first reported in the UK in 1992 from pigs with haemorrhagic lesions and more recently from healthy pigs in Spain and Japan. Here, a persistent problem of poor growth and anaemia in a small proportion of growing pigs on a mixed pig and shee

Acute viral hepatitis in the United States-Mexico border region: data from the Border Infectious Disease Surveillance (BIDS) Project, 2000-2009.

Little is known about the characteristics of acute viral hepatitis cases in the United States (US)-Mexico border region. We analyzed characteristics of acute viral hepatitis cases collected from the Border Infectious Disease Surveillance Project from January 2000-December 2009. Over the study period, 1,437 acute hepatitis A, 311 acute hepatitis B, and 362 acute hepatitis C cases were reported from 5 Mexico and 2 US sites. Mexican hepatitis A cases most frequently reported close personal contact with a known case, whereas, US cases most often reported cross-border travel. Injection drug use was

Three-dimensional evaluation of subclinical extension of extramammary Paget disease: visualization of the histological border and its comparison to the clinical border.

BACKGROUND: In extramammary Paget disease (EMPD), Paget cells are sometimes detected outside the clinical border (subclinical extension). However, the spreading pattern of Paget cells in subclinical extension remains unclear. In addition, the macroscopic appearances of lesions accompanied by subclinical extension are totally unknown. OBJECTIVES: To characterize the spreading pattern of Paget cells as well as the macroscopic appearance of lesions of EMPD with subclinical extension. METHODS: Nineteen patients with primary anogenital EMPD underwent mapping biopsies and excisional surgeries; bio
