Bordetella pertussis and mixed infections.

AIM: In pertussis-like respiratory infections, once pertussis has been laboratory confirmed, other potential causative pathogens will seldom be looked for. Probably most mixed infections are found accidentally and since these mixed infections might cause a more severe disease we performed a retrospective study of their incidence. METHODS: We selected from 2 groups of patients with serologically confirmed Bordetella (B.) pertussis infection those in whom serology for other respiratory pathogens had also been performed. Group 1 consisted of 50 pertussis patients with 51 episodes of B. pertussis

Bordetella bronchiseptica infection.

OBJECTIVE: To collect data of all patients admitted to hospital with a positive test to Bordetella bronchiseptica between 2001 and 2015. METHODS: We performed a retrospective monocentric study of all hospitalized patients over the past 15 years with a positive test to B. bronchiseptica. RESULTS: Nine patients were included between 2001 and 2015; two presented with infectious relapses, i.e. a total of 14 positive test samples were observed. Age, induced immunodeficiency, and preexisting respiratory illnesses are risk factors. All patients showed symptoms at sample collection and the infection

Multicenter Study on Children With Bordetella parapertussis Infections.

BACKGROUND: Bordetella parapertussis (BPP) causes a pertussis-like illness that is typically milder than classical pertussis, likely due to the absence of pertussis toxin. However, its clinical spectrum remains insufficiently characterized, partly because viral coinfections are frequently present. This study aimed to investigate the clinical course and management of BPP infections in children, specifically excluding cases with coinfections. METHODS: We conducted a multicenter retrospective study of patients aged ≤15 years who underwent multiplex polymerase chain reaction testing using the Bio

Molecular pathogenesis, epidemiology, and clinical manifestations of respiratory infections due to Bordetella pertussis and other Bordetella subspecies.

Bordetella respiratory infections are common in people (B. pertussis) and in animals (B. bronchiseptica). During the last two decades, much has been learned about the virulence determinants, pathogenesis, and immunity of Bordetella. Clinically, the full spectrum of disease due to B. pertussis infection is now understood, and infections in adolescents and adults are recognized as the reservoir for cyclic outbreaks of disease. DTaP vaccines, which are less reactogenic than DTP vaccines, are now in general use in many developed countries, and it is expected that the expansion of their use to adol

Acute Bordetella pertussis infection in an adult.

Bordetella pertussis was transmitted from an immunized boy to his father and possibly to other family members. This case report demonstrates that although unusual, acute adult B. pertussis infection can occur. B. pertussis immunization may not prevent infection but can reduce the severity. B. pertussis was detected in sputum from the adult by direct-fluorescent antibody staining and was grown on Regan-Lowe medium. Serology tests confirmed the infection in the adult.

Bordetella pertussis whole cell immunization protects against Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.

Whole cell vaccines are complex mixtures of antigens, immunogens, and sometimes adjuvants that can trigger potent and protective immune responses. In some instances, such as whole cell Bordetella pertussis vaccination, the immune response to vaccination extends beyond the pathogen the vaccine was intended for and contributes to protection against other clinically significant pathogens. In this study, we describe how B. pertussis whole cell vaccination protects mice against acute pneumonia caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Using ELISA and western blot, we identified that B. pertussis whole cell

Importance of culture in laboratory diagnosis of Bordetella pertussis infections.

Nasopharyngeal secretions from 223 patients were examined for the presence of Bordetella pertussis and B. parapertussis by culturing on Regan-Lowe agar (J. Regan and F. Lowe, J. Clin. Microbiol. 6:303-309, 1977) and by direct fluorescent-antibody testing. B. pertussis was found in 38 patients; B. parapertussis was recovered from 2. Culturing was more sensitive (38 of 38 patients) than direct fluorescent-antibody testing (26 of 38 patients) for the detection of B. pertussis. Overgrowth by other organisms (7 of 223 patients) was uncommon. The patients with B. pertussis infections were generally

Bordetella bronchiseptica and Bordetella pertussis: Similarities and Differences in Infection, Immuno-Modulation, and Vaccine Considerations.

Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella bronchiseptica belong to the genus Bordetella, which comprises 14 other species. B. pertussis is responsible for whooping cough in humans, a severe infection in children and less severe or chronic in adults. These infections are restricted to humans and currently increasing worldwide. B. bronchiseptica is involved in diverse respiratory infections in a wide range of mammals. For instance, the canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), characterized by a chronic cough in dogs. At the same time, it is increasingly implicated in human infections, wh

Infection with Bordetella parapertussis but not Bordetella pertussis causes pertussis-like disease in older pigs.

The 3 major Bordetella species--namely, B. pertussis, B. parapertussis, and B. bronchiseptica--can be distinguished by their different host ranges. B. bronchiseptica infects a wide range of mammals (including humans), whereas B. pertussis infects only humans and, under experimental conditions, mice and pigs. In contrast, B. parapertussis, also a causative agent of pertussis, displays a unique host specificity with 2 subgroups, one infecting only humans and the other infecting only sheep. Here, we show that both strains of B. parapertussis also infect older piglets when delivered intrapulmonari

[Protection against infection with Bordetella pertussis by an oligopeptide from Bordetella pertussis (author's transl)].

We have isolated from Bordetella pertussis an oligopeptide with characteristic amino acid composition. This peptide was applied to mice in standardized tests for pertussis immunization. In three tests with three independent isolates of peptide, a significant and dose dependent protection was observed. One microgram of peptide per mouse produces the same protective effect as 0.1 IU of pertussis vaccine. It is important to note that similar peptides can be isolated from other bacteria and other DNA containing cellular organisms which have specific amino acid compositions and which are antigens s

Differential expression of alpha 4 integrins on effector memory T helper cells during Bordetella infections. Delayed responses in Bordetella pertussis.

Bordetella pertussis (B. pertussis) is the causative agent of whooping cough, a respiratory disease that is reemerging worldwide. Mechanisms of selective lymphocyte trafficking to the airways are likely to be critical in the immune response to this pathogen. We compared murine infection by B. pertussis, B. parapertussis, and a pertussis toxin-deleted B. pertussis mutant (BpΔPTX) to test the hypothesis that effector memory T-helper cells (emTh) display an altered pattern of trafficking receptor expression in B. pertussis infection due to a defect in imprinting. Increased cell recruitment to the

A case of undiagnosed Bordetella pertussis infection in a neonate.

CASE REPORT: We encountered a 28 -day -old infant with progressive respiratory failure diagnosed with pertussis after discharge from the hospital. Here, we describe the disease course, diagnostic difficulties and treatment procedure. After 20 days of treatment based on the doctors’ experience (without an established diagnosis), the child was deemed healthy and discharged. At the 6 -month follow -up, the child was healthy and showed normal development. No other Bordetella pertussis infections among newborns or hospital staff who were in contact with the patient and his family were reported. CO

Prosthetic-Joint-Associated Bordetella holmesii Infection.

Bordetella holmesii is a globally distributed pathogen that is increasingly recognized as a cause of both pertussis-like respiratory infections and invasive disease. In this study, we describe a case of an immunocompetent man who developed B holmesii infection of his femoral prosthesis-the fifth B holmesii orthopedic infection reported in literature to date. This article highlights the potentially underrecognized role of B holmesii in orthopedic infections by reviewing these previously reported cases in the context of the current literature.

Angioedema as a predominant symptom of Bordetella pertussis infection.

A 41-year-old woman was referred to our hospital with a 6-week history of severe angioedema, dyspnoea and coughing. Initial investigations focused on common causes of angioedema. Clinical presentation and resistance to treatment with antihistamines and steroids made histamine-mediated angioedema unlikely. Bradykinin-mediated angioedema, such as hereditary or drug-induced angioedema, was excluded by a thorough history investigation and laboratory testing for C1-esterase and C4.In rare cases, exogen pathogens cause angioedema. After profound testing for respiratory pathogens, Bordetella pertussi

Occurrence of Bordetella infection in pigs in northern India.

Bordetella bronchiseptica infection causing atrophic rhinitis in pigs is reported from almost all countries. In the present study, occurrence of Bordetella infection in apparently healthy pigs was determined in 392 pigs sampled to collect 358 serum samples and 316 nasal swabs from Northern India by conventional bacterioscopy, detection of antigen with multiplex polymerase chain reaction (mPCR), and detection of antibodies with microagglutination test (MAT) and enzyme linked immune-sorbent assay (ELISA). Bordetella bronchiseptica could be isolated from six (1.92%) nasal swabs. Although isolates

The seroepidemiology of Bordetella pertussis infection in Western Europe.

High titres of pertussis toxin (PT) antibody have been shown to be predictive of recent infection with Bordetella pertussis. The seroprevalence of standardized anti-PT antibody was determined in six Western European countries between 1994 and 1998 and related to historical surveillance and vaccine programme data. Standardized anti-PT titres were calculated for a series of whole-cell and acellular pertussis vaccine trials. For the serological surveys, high-titre sera (> 125 units/ml) were distributed throughout all age groups in both high- (> 90%) and low-coverage (< 90%) countries. High-titre

Non-classical Bordetella sp. (closely related to Bordetella hinzii and Bordetella pseudohinzii) lower respiratory tract infection in a patient with extensive bronchiectasis: a case report.

An increasing number of reports have described the pathogenic nature of several non-classical Bordetella spp. Among them, Bordetella hinzii and Bordetella pseudohinzii have been implicated in a myriad of respiratory-associated infections in humans and animals. We report the isolation of a genetically close relative of B. hinzii and B. pseudohinzii from the sputum of a woman in her early 60s with extensive bronchiectasis who presented with fever and brown colored sputum. The isolate had initially been identified as Bordetella avium by API 20NE, the identification system for non-enteric Gram-neg

The efficacy of a whole cell pertussis vaccine and fimbriae against Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella parapertussis infections in a respiratory mouse model.

Due to local and systemic side-effects, the currently used, highly effective, whole-cell pertussis vaccines (WCVs) will be replaced by acellular vaccines (ACVs) in some countries. These ACVs contain detoxified pertussis toxin, either alone or in combination with the filamentous haemagglutinin, pertactin and fimbriae. Ongoing clinical trials show that ACVs are clearly less reactogenic than WCVs and that ACVs comprised of three to five proteins are highly efficacious in inducing protection against Bordetella pertussis infections. An important unresolved question is, what the effect will be of th
