OBJECTIVE: To collect data of all patients admitted to hospital with a positive test to Bordetella bronchiseptica between 2001 and 2015.
METHODS: We performed a retrospective monocentric study of all hospitalized patients over the past 15 years with a positive test to B. bronchiseptica.
RESULTS: Nine patients were included between 2001 and 2015; two presented with infectious relapses, i.e. a total of 14 positive test samples were observed. Age, induced immunodeficiency, and preexisting respiratory illnesses are risk factors. All patients showed symptoms at sample collection and the infection

Bordetella bronchiseptica is involved in respiratory tract infections mainly in dogs and pigs but may also cause infections in humans. Valid and representative data on antimicrobial susceptibility of B. bronchiseptica is rare. Approved antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods have been published, but very few clinical breakpoints are available. The MIC values are low for most agents but high for β-lactam antibiotics and macrolides. Information on the genetic basis of resistance is scarce. For a small number of isolates that are resistant or show elevated MICs, the molecular basis of resist

Bordetella bronchiseptica rarely causes disease in man, and is an unusual pathogen in animals. It causes a pertussis-like syndrome, but pneumonia and sepsis have been described in the immunocompromised as well as in the immunocompetent. A 53-year-old man with adult-onset diabetes and healed pulmonary tuberculosis presented with lobar pneumonia and rapidly developed septic shock with adult respiratory distress syndrome. He responded well to the combination of piperacillin-tazobactam.

BACKGROUND: Bordetella bronchiseptica is a gram-negative, obligate aerobic coccobacillus known to cause disease in domesticated animals and pets. In humans, B. bronchiseptica commonly leads to respiratory infections like pneumonia or bronchitis, and animal contact usually precedes the onset of symptoms.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of post-traumatic B. bronchiseptica meningitis without recent surgery in the setting of immunosuppression with a monoclonal antibody. Our case concerns a 77-year-old male with ulcerative colitis on infliximab who sustained a mechanical fall and developed a t

Whole-cell suspensions (WCSs) and cell-free sonicated extracts (SEs) of seven Bordetella bronchiseptica strains were studied for lethality and lienotoxicity in mice. Lethality was assessed after intravenous and intracerebral inoculation, and lienotoxicity by splenic atrophy after intravenous inoculation. The strains represented phase I isolates with or without cytotoxin production, their phase III subcultures and a phase IV variant. The lethality and lienotoxicity of the SEs were in close positive correlation with cytotoxin production. The WCSs of all phase I strains were lethal, irrespective

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a rare pulmonary infection, often associated with zoonotic transmission. It has been described in immunocompromised patients and those with underlying pulmonary disease. However, there are no case series describing the spectrum of disease caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis. Here, we report three cases of Bordetella bronchiseptica infection in patients with non-cystic fibrosis bronchiectasis and highlight the pathophysiology of the microbe. While the clinical presentation can be quite variable, it is important to

Whooping cough is resurging in the United States despite high vaccine coverage. The rapid rise of Bordetella pertussis isolates lacking pertactin (PRN), a key vaccine antigen, has led to concerns about vaccine-driven evolution. Previous studies showed that pertactin can mediate binding to mammalian cells in vitro and act as an immunomodulatory factor in resisting neutrophil-mediated clearance. To further investigate the role of PRN in vivo, we examined the functions of pertactin in the context of a more naturally low dose inoculation experimental system using C3H/HeJ mice that is more sensitiv

Studies of virulence factors of Bordetella bronchiseptica require a suitable system. Such a system was devised in colostrum-deprived, caesarean-derived pigs, aged 7 d. In two different experiments, pigs (n = 11) were inoculated intranasally with 10(6) colony-forming units of the virulent strain 4609. In the same way, further pigs (n = 11) were inoculated with a strain (B133) of unknown virulence. No significant differences between 4609 and B133 colonization were seen. However, colonization of the turbinates was significantly higher than that of the trachea, lung and tonsil, and a significantly

A 15-month-old male neutered Wirehaired Pointer mixed-breed dog presented with fever and cervical pain. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis showed neutrophilic pleocytosis with intracellular bacteria, and culture of CSF grew Bordetella bronchiseptica. The patient became non-ambulatory 3 days after CSF collection. He was treated with low-dose prednisone for 3.5 months and doxycycline for 1 year. Recheck CSF analysis 1 month after diagnosis showed reduction of inflammation and 3 months after diagnosis revealed only increased protein. The patient improved neurologically over several months and was

Twenty-two newborn puppies that did not receive colostrum exhibited acute respiratory signs and died at a breeding facility. Pathological examinations were performed on four of the puppies. At necropsy examination, the lungs were firm and mottled dark red, consistent with acute bronchopneumonia. Histopathologically, there was marked infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages into the bronchi and alveoli, and gram-negative coccobacilli were attached diffusely to the cilia of bronchial mucosa. Immunohistochemistry for Bordetella bronchiseptica antigen revealed positive labelling of the bacteria

Bordetella bronchiseptica are small, pleomorphic Gram-negative coccobacilli which are commensal organisms in the upper respiratory tract of many wild and domestic animals ('kennel cough' in dogs). While it is common for health care providers to ask about exposure to ill family/friends, most do not routinely inquire about the health or immunization status of household pets. We report two cases of B. bronchiseptica pneumonia in lung transplant recipients [cystic fibrosis (CF); ages 10 and 15 yr; one male] who contracted B. bronchiseptica from pet dogs. We compared their course and outcome to fou

Transmission of pathogens has been notoriously difficult to study under laboratory conditions leaving knowledge gaps regarding how bacterial factors and host immune components affect the spread of infections between hosts. We describe the development of a mouse model of transmission of a natural pathogen, Bordetella bronchiseptica, and its use to assess the impact of host immune functions. Although B. bronchiseptica transmits poorly between wild-type mice and mice lacking other immune components, it transmits efficiently between mice deficient in Toll-Like Receptor 4 (TLR4). TLR4-mutant mice w

A cross-sectional survey of a convenience-sample of 740 cats was undertaken to obtain an estimate of the prevalence of Bordetella bronchiseptica infection, and to identify risk factors that might predispose them to the infection. Data on individual cats and household variables, including disease status and animal contacts were obtained by questionnaire. B bronchiseptica was isolated from 82 (11 per cent) of the cats sampled. The prevalence of B bronchiseptica varied with the type of household sampled, being 19.5 per cent in rescue catteries, 9 per cent in breeding catteries, 13.5 per cent in r

BACKGROUND: The lack of animal models to experimentally study how infectious agents transmit between hosts limits our understanding of what makes some pathogens so contagious.
METHODS: We recently developed a Bordetella bronchiseptica mouse model to study transmission and have used it to assess, for the first time, which of several well-studied "virulence factors" common to classical Bordetella species contribute to transmission.
RESULTS: Among 13 mutants screened, a mutant lacking an extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) locus consistently failed to transmit. The loss of EPS had no obvious eff

OBJECTIVES: Little is currently known about beta-lactam resistance in Bordetella bronchiseptica. So far, only a single beta-lactamase gene, bla(BOR-1), has been identified. In a previous study, high MICs of ampicillin, cefalotin and ceftiofur were determined among 349 porcine B. bronchiseptica isolates. The aim of this study was to identify genes associated with elevated MICs of beta-lactams and their transferability.
METHODS: Selected isolates were investigated by PCR for commonly found bla genes and class 1 integrons; selected amplicons were sequenced. Plasmid location of resistance genes w

We report a case of pneumonia, caused by Bordetella bronchiseptica, in a previously healthy, immunocompetent 37-year-old male patient who had suffered chest injury in a car accident. The patient was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit where endotracheal intubation was performed. Seventy-two hours later he presented with fever associated with pulmonary affection which was diagnosed as right lobar pneumonia. Abundant colonies of B. bronchiseptica were isolated from the pharyngeal exudate and respiratory secretions, suggesting prior oropharyngeal colonization by B. bronchiseptica, as a result of

Bordetella bronchiseptica is a highly contagious bacterial respiratory pathogen with a broad host range of wild and domesticated mammals that can cause a variety of clinical disease outcomes ranging from asymptomatic carriage to severe pneumonia. The goal of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of B. bronchiseptica isolates obtained from primates and evaluate the antimicrobial resistance harbored by these isolates. Two isolates were identified as belonging to B. bronchiseptica lineage II and 13 isolates represented new sequence types within B. bronchiseptica lineage I clonal comple

Bordetella pertussis and Bordetella bronchiseptica belong to the genus Bordetella, which comprises 14 other species. B. pertussis is responsible for whooping cough in humans, a severe infection in children and less severe or chronic in adults. These infections are restricted to humans and currently increasing worldwide. B. bronchiseptica is involved in diverse respiratory infections in a wide range of mammals. For instance, the canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC), characterized by a chronic cough in dogs. At the same time, it is increasingly implicated in human infections, wh

The expression of bacterial cold-shock proteins (CSPs) is highly induced in response to cold shock, and some CSPs are essential for cells to resume growth at low temperature. Bordetella bronchiseptica encodes five CSPs (named CspA to CspE) with significant amino acid homology to CspA of Escherichia coli. In contrast to E. coli, the insertional knock-out of a single csp gene (cspB) strongly affected growth of B. bronchiseptica independent of temperature. In the case of three of the csp genes (cspA, cspB, cspC) more than one specific transcript could be detected. The net amount of cspA, cspB and
